i began watching horror stuff in the 80's when i was a kid...80's were slashers, now in 2000, we're into gore.....but i'm not too familar with 70's horror.....which when i caught a scary movie on tv recently (i dont know if the title was "now the screaming begins") and gotta say, 70's movie can be pretty damn cool, ....it captures the eerie atmosphere which no movies nowadays can...with no need for fancy f/x.
can anyone recommend some really creepy films from the 70's...doesnt have to be blood n gore... but really spooky stuff...for a good scare! and a good story/plot!....thanks!

Well, I'd recommend the following from the 70s:
Delirium (1972) - not really scary, but the story is quite good
The Wicker Man (1973) - very weird movie, story is pretty good
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - I bet you've seen this one already
Island of Death (1975) - Scary in the way of brutal force
Bloodsucking Freaks (1976) - same applies here
Salem' Lot (1979) - not scary, good atmosphere
Buio Omega (1979) - Scary in the way of brutal force
I haven't watched the following yet, but they seem to be OK:
Don't Look in the Basement (1973)
Profondo Rosso (1975)
Late Night Trains (1975)
Satan's Blood (1977)
The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
Summer of Fear (1978)
Actually, quite some well known horrors are from the 70s like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist and The Omen, so yes, there are good and (more or less) scary movies from the 70s to be found. Hope you can do something with this.

And while you're at it add on:
Black Christmas (1974 - Spooky!)
The Manitou (1978 - Evil Indian spirits!)
A Bay of Blood (1971 - Before Friday the 13th there was... this!)
Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter (1974 - action/horror! Very fun)
The Other (1972 - It is... well... you should just watch it. I don't want to spoil the surprise)
There is a nice shotgun blast of 70s horror for ya. Enjoy!

Legend of Hell House is a good haunted house movie.
Don't Look Now has a good creepy vibe to it.
The Last Wave isn't my fave, but its weird enough.

The ultimate!
'Suspiria' is a good call, as is 'Deep Red'.
Romero's 'The Crazies' is worth a watch, really atmospheric, I need to watch that one again.
'The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue'.
'Don't Look Now' is another excellent mention. Very odd, but technically brilliant film.

The Brood is great. Not my personal favorite Cronenberg, but very good none the less.

The Maitou sucks. Good book, bad, bad movie. I've gotta think that was a nostalgic choice.

Well, of course it is all a matter of opinion, but there are some genuinely
creepy moments in the film. I don't want to spoil it for Joelbee, but the
seance around the black table is creepy. Anyhoo, I would give the movie a shot and decide for yourself.
I've never read the book. It always seems like the book is better than the movie... Starship Troopers comes to mind.
