I love all gore movies from anything extreme to stuff like exorcist. Yet one film i can watch over and over again. Is Nightbreed or Cabal in book version. I so so wish he would make a Nightbreed 2 the first one was left open for a second but it just never happened.

Any of you chaps feel the same way about this movie? i think all the monsters in it are just pure class.. When i die i so want to be a Nightbreed, not had the dreams yet though about Midian

Here is what I liked most about Nightbreed:



I liked the movie, but it is definitely not on any of my top lists.

Nightbreed was no Hellraiser.

However, if the Hellraiser remake goes well (as in makes money, I fully expect a thoroughly disappointingly effort when remaking a 5 star movie for absolutely no reason other than to make dirty buck) there's a chance they might claw through other barker movies. Nightbreed monsters are in a similar vein to Hellraiser's.

Still, the barker cannon goes:
Hellraiser>candyman>night breed

I'd almost go Candyman before Hellraiser. That film was beautiful.

Dunno, like them both, but Hellraiser is better movie.

But that doesn't mean I'll watch Candyman rather then Hellraiser again, since Hellraiser was slow and boring at some parts.

I wouldn't say its boring, just not speedy enough to repeatedly watch it.

I loved Nightbreed (easily in my top ten), Candyman was OK.

Bring on Nightbreed 2.

Although flawed, I thought Nightbreed had a fantastic originality to it, and I still love the climatic battle, realeasing the Beserkers etc. I loved the depth of creativity behind the 'freaks'.

I still have my copy of the accompanying glossy book, 'The NIghtbreed Chronicles', signed by assorted cast members.

For all out Horror, yeah, Hellraiser ticks more boxes and the Cenobites are a brilliant creation but as stand-alone films they prob rate equally with me for different reasons.

Candyman I've always thought was at the better end of average. Good, but without the special 'something' of the other two.

But again, I can watch Evil Dead 1-3 over and over never to get bored.

Same goes for non-horror ED WOOD, Tim Burtons Masterpiece!

I've got to mirror that perkin, I thought Nightbreed's main failing was actually the complete lack of depth and characterisation. You care nothing of the characters, monsters, etc. because the movie spends absolutely no time developing them.

Its more like Cliver Barker's Series of Morbid Events; a real coherence between characters, motivations, etc. is what was missing and its ultimately why that film was less satisfying than hellraiser or candyman imo.

That's why I'd switch round Candyman and Nightbreed in perkin's assessment personally; Candyman was brilliant and original, Nightbreed was kind of missing a strong plot and characters that didn't rely solely on appearance to hold it all together... the finalé is compeletely rushed which leads to the whole let down for the movie. The lack of strong plot and characterisation did a lot to tarnish Nightbreed and it drops to the high end of average/low end of excellent largely because of its artwork, whereas Candyman takes the subject matter and really runs with it to make one of the most original and, infact, possibly one of the most superior "self-reflective" horror movies I've seen to date. It surpasses its initial base to make really memorable movie.

If you compare to Hellraiser to Nightbreed, pinhead has far more character and personality than the entire cast of Nightbreed. There's more in Cliver Barker's artistry for Nightbreed than there is worth made by the cinematics and film. In fact, because of the wealth of art and concept that was overlooked by the movie, it probably does deserve a sequel*



* todays trend seems to be remake however, there is content that really could do with fixing too so it would be an interesting candidate... i mean if they really must systematically rape the genre, at least do films that they have potentional to 'fix'

Again though, when I saw Nightbreed, waaay back at 15yrs old, it was the imagery of the creatures that really done it for me. Reading and re-reading thye chronicles, I already felt like the back stories were filled in. Watching it without that, yeah, the whole thing might well seem under developed, which is certainly valid when someone just watches it as a film, which, considering this website, is kinda the point. I gotta stand by what I said though.

Oh, and 'Peloquin' is fu**ing cool!

Don't get me wrong, I think the first Hellraiser is flippin' amazing, but the history of Pinhead and the gang was developed over the series of (dramatically decreasing in quality) films.

I think we can all agree that all the films have strong merit, deserving classic/near classic status, and all come from a time when horror was looking pretty good compared to the MySpace demographic/Eli Roth balls that's pumped out at the moment.

Nix - Lord of Illusion, I think he was one kick ass character.

Im not big fan of his writings (he has great ideas, but he does not have great form of sentence in his writings) but he makes good movies for sure

Nighbreed is freakin awesome... Hellraiser is better, but I kinda got tired after the first 500 movies. Nightbreed 2 would be a dream come true!

Hellraiser is totally inovative, well for it's time. It brought revulsion to maintstream horror and I've loved it ever since. Nightbreed also holds a special place for me but mainly for Cronenburg's horribly acted psycho, which I thought was just so tongue-in-cheek that it was actually a parody.

Now Candyman was very poetic as I can listen to him speak endlessly and not even need a visual, much like Pinhead.

Clive really knows his characters and if you read the original stories (Hellbound Heart, The Forbidden, Cabal) you can really feel where the movies SHOULD have gone when they failed to produce it. His ideas are intact in the films, just not well realized.

Lord of Illusion was a lot tamer than the novella though, and I think it could have really been a lot more horrific if the studio allowed it, which I suspect it wouldn't. Even Raw Head Rex I found pretty enjoyable and could watch over and over. Transmutations however....well...I could barely watch it the 1st time.
