wasn't half bad for an indie this, more a showcase on the makers talents than all out successful film, but hell yeah good solid debut..
I did a mini review of it yesterday

'Quaint Australian Miranda Falls is about to go from being a sleepy uneventful small town to an hive of demonic forces. Originally a six minute short made back in October 2001, and lovingly crafted over the years to its current feature length of 85 minutes. What director Stuart Simpson lacks in funds he more than makes up for with witty experimental directing. Its actually a treat to stumble on a low budget director who doesn’t just setup and film his actors, instead here choosing to take us on a much more fun journey as he jump cuts between scenes using various color techniques and dozens of computer aided tricks. Was a moment in the late 80s when bedroom musicians finally started to take on the heavy funded over produced studio artist and actually sold records, maybe Stuart Simpson here is a sign that the indie film makers can finally achieve that. The film does make you think of those other 2 low budget horror milestones Evil Dead and Blair Witch. Plots where it does fall foul somewhat its never dull but maybe due to the 5 years in the making of period does jump around far too much, cast do a good job even though a few are clearly not destined to become professional actors. Music and sound effects work are much better than most indie films as is the make up and FX work. I think to fairly sum it up you'd have to say it’s a fine showcase of what the makers of this film could achieve and that its just good fortune that it’s also a damned entertaining view for its budget experience as well. So looking forward to seeing what the makers come up with for a second helping.' |
