Been thinking about this lately, when I've released movies in the past which have english subs, I've always hard coded them into the DiVX file. What are people's general feelings on this?

Would you prefer subs hardcoded, or released separately as .sub & .idx files?

From my point of view, if I download a movie with subs I'd rather have them hardcoded as I convert to DVD then watch them on my big TV. I don't like farting around with Virtualdub filters & such trying to get the subs saved into the movie.

I like the SRT ones. They are small and I can decide if I want them displayed and where to display them - over the movie (ffdshow) for fullscreen or below it (radlight - subs aren't transparent on NVidia TV-Out) for widescreen releases. As there isn't only the English language it's good if subs can be replaced.

Hardcoded subs are annoying (except maybe on asian movies) but hey - much better this way than nothing.

Well I prefer hardcoded - provided it's done properly ....

No offense man but I just saw your "ebola syndrome" some 3 weeks ago....couldn't always make out the subs when a guy with a white shirt entered the screen..
was it one of your older rips ?

I don't care what format the sub are in. Managed to play then all, yet. But I really hate them hardcoded. Sometimes I use movies to improve my language skills, so to disable subs is nice. Somtimes I got movies with subs, which were hardly readable, because of color, position, or size. So I'd like to decide if and where they are displayed.
If I had the choice between hard and soft subbed, I'd alwas choose the soft sub. Eventually redownload a film again, if a soft subbed version becomes available.

Somtimes you get in Germany films on DVD with subs you cannot disable. I have even seen films in english with enlish subs. Has some legal reasons. Guess what I'd never buy?

No offence taken. It was one of my older rips, and I wish I still had the DVD to re-rip it as the resolution sucks as well as the subs being difficult to read.

Never mind, you live & learn.

Yeah, I was talking about non-english (typically asian in my case) movies.

I prefer .idx and .sub namely because you can spend space on the rip. .sub can be played from inside a rar archive ;)

I like all the text formats because they are small and you can turn them off. It's also quite comfortable that you can control the font size and background color.

I actually prefer hardcoded subs for the sole fact that my divx dvd player cant handle seperate subtitle files in any format. Thats why my precious asian movies arent being watched anymore because I cant be stuffed watching them on the computer (no video out)

What divx player do you've got? I always put the movie and the subtitles in one folder and then burn it with Nero and my KISS divxplayer never had a problem with it. Actually since firmware 2.7.4 it's working like a charm :D

Btw I prefer hardcoded or the small .srt file. Had some problems that I couldn't burn a movie because the .sub was just that extra mb that didn't fit on the cd :?

i preffer seperate subs, though i doubt i would watch a film i didnt know the language without subs.

i had some success removing hardcoded subs with the delogo and logo-away filters in virtualdub, for those who really hate hardcoded subs. it does take a bit of effort to remove them.

I am not really sure what all the fuss is about in beeing able to play them, get zplayer and get vobsub and things pretty much work fine in any format.I can imagine though certain op systems might not jive with these though so that might be the problem on a few people. :beerchug:
