Cheers spud, will take a looksie.
I just ran Knoppix and it was great, it could not read my NTFS partitions, but I assume that is cos they are NTFS. My video, sound and mouse are all fine, couldnt test my other hardware but have seen linux drivers for these. My AVI files on CD played very well, better than WMP plays them, and just as good as BSPlayer. The interface was nice, but I could not figure out how to get my internet going LOL I tried to set up my network card but that was a no go, but this too I know can be done as I read about it earlier.
Any of you Linux guru's know how I could tell knoppix to get the fuckin network card to work for online purposes? It is a netgear fa311.

Difficult to help via board.
Open an shell and do 'lsmod'. I googled a bit. The fa311 needs a natsemi module. Do you see something like that? If not try 'modprobe natsemi' <-- wild guess.

fa311 cards should be supported out of the box according to this. Type 'ifconfig' in a terminal windows. If you see an eth0 interface there the drivers are loaded and working so the next step is to configure network - there's an "Set up network" shortcut somewhere in Knoppix menus.

Cant get disk 2 to write to a CD properly, have tried 4 times now with both nero and cheetah, both get to the end and return errors, funny thing is it will mount on daemon tools fine, even tried copying the mounted image, still wont write properly. Just downloading again and will try again.

Uh Oh, you now scratched the most complicated and dangerous part of Linux. That complicated and dangerous that it will never be usable by the broad mass: You have CHOICE. *shiver*
Ok, real answer: Depends on what you have installed. If you want to use KDE there is konqueror. If you use GNOME there is ....don't know, but probably junk. Don't laugh, but I only use the midnight commander. Remember DOS? The Norton Commander? Yep, it is a clone.

I guess I will have to have a fiddle. I have stripped all the old windows progs and just have a bare install with a few other odds and sods, gonna be mainly for games.
I have, for the time being, got a 12 gig partition for mandrake, that should do the trick LOL
Gonna re-install it and set it up for online access and also sort out the media playing abilities.
One question, yes another one LOL, how safe will I be surfing and p2p with it "out of the box"? Should I install a firewall or is linux safer in that respect?

Not sure about modern Mandrake. But it might be that your out of the box media playing abilities are crippled (no mp3? no dvd playing?). This might be because of legal reasons. Large distibutions like RedHat and Mandrake cannot ignore them. If you have problems look here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/news.htmlHere you find links to special Windoze dlls Mandrake can't ship for sure. TaKYoN wrote: | One question, yes another one LOL, how safe will I be surfing and p2p with it "out of the box"? Should I install a firewall or is linux safer in that respect? |
This is more or less a matter of believe. Under my Linux I know every single running program and know which port it is listening to. So I don't have a 'firewall' for another reason than to filter certain connections to edonkey peers I don't like, e.g. Spud. (Dammit, such jokes are far less funny with Spud than with PrayeR ) Apart from that I am open for more than 2 years 24/7 connected. I have hints for hundreds of port scans in my logs, but so far (as far as I know) no successful attack. But of course it depends much on what you are doing with you machine. If you are running Apache with scripting enabled you are much more vulnerable to exploitable bugs than when to are only running a sshd. If the only from the outside reachable programs are mldonkey and sshd you probably don't need a firewall. And of course, you give the p2p client an account of its own.
Btw.: I someone is disturbed by all the Linux talk, please tell. I'd be willing to go on via pm.

Had a crisis earlier, I thought I had messed up, turns out my HDD heads crashed?!?!?!? Must be a woman driver LOL Luckily my bro has a spare HDD so I am up and runing again, just lost all my movies and other media

is there a fileformat that is compatible with nix and win32, that can handle massive files too?
I mean i *need* ntfs due to the fact i capture AVIs that can go up 30gb and burn shit lots of DVDs. FAT32 can't handle files over 2gb or something and i've only ever seen the option to use NTFS or FAT32

Hmm, maybe some outside software from a third party, I know you can get soft to akkow win 98 to see NTFS, I think.
On a sidenote, I keep getting this error :-o - Could not find mime type
application/octet-stream whenever I open Konqueror browser, was getting for a while too with Kmail and Knode too, altho that seems to have stopped now. I am off googling now for an answer LOL
BTW, this site is the first to go in my new favourites list.

"Could not find mime type" means it doesn't understand what it is, octet-stream is text I *think*
win32 has contributed something thats a plauge, it associates file extension with file content, whereas nix evaluates content and then uses associated programs. I guess it's having trouble understanding some action/file/path your trying to access.

Fuck it, I could not get it to work right, so I re did the partition and reinstalled, now the damn thing is stuck in super slow motion, I am talking about 15 minutes to boot, 1 or 2 minutes to register a mouse click, and it just stays like that. I have re-installed the damn thing 3 times now and it is still the same, and to make matters worse I cannot even find any online help to sort this out. When I switched it on earlier it did not even ask me for a password and then stopped working again, this is some weird shit. I do not think it is a hardwre issue as all was fine on Friday. Any suggestions?
May have to have a go at red hat LOL
