Special 25th Anniversary Edition

Image

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047/
Quote:
Novelist William Peter Blatty based his best-seller on the last known Catholic-sanctioned exorcism in the United States. Blatty transformed the little boy in the 1949 incident into a little girl named Regan, played by 14-year-old Linda Blair. Suddenly prone to fits and bizarre behavior, Regan proves quite a handful for her actress-mother Chris MacNeil (played by Ellen Burstyn, although Blatty reportedly based the character on his next-door neighbor Shirley MacLaine). When Regan gets completely out of hand, Chris calls in young priest Father Karras (Jason Miller), who becomes convinced that the girl is possessed by the Devil and that they must call in an exorcist: namely, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow). His foe proves to be no run-of-the-mill demon, and both the priest and the girl suffer numerous horrors during their struggles. The Exorcist received a theatrical rerelease in 2000, in a special edition that added eleven minutes of footage trimmed from the film's original release, and digitally enhanced Chris Newman's Oscar-winning sound work. ? The Version You've Never Seen

Image
Quote:
Although it was endorsed by director William Friedkin (reportedly with some reluctance), this "new" version of The Exorcist was criticized by many as a marketing ploy, and now exists for perpetual debate among horror fans. In addition to a few more subtly inserted "subliminals" of demonic imagery, 12 minutes of previously unseen footage focus on four new scenes: the series of physical tests (spinal tap, etc.) that Regan (Linda Blair) must endure; a post-ritual scene between priests Karras (Jason Miller) and Merrin (Max von Sydow), in which Merrin postulates that Satan is targeting them in order to make them despair and doubt their faith; a different version of the famous "spider-walk" scene (shown as an outtake in the previous special edition DVD's making-of documentary), in which Regan eerily walks down stairs in an upside-down, crablike movement, with blood dripping from her mouth; and a new ending, in which Father Dyer (Rev. William O'Malley) meets Lieutenant Kinderman (Lee J. Cobb) and the two of them share a casual chat about movies, echoing Kinderman's earlier talk with Father Karras. This final change was viewed by many as the most egregious, destroying the closing note of the original version. Fans and critics alike found much more to praise in the spectacular remixing and remastering of the film's original soundtrack, which is now scarier than ever in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound. --Jeff Shannon

Are you 'scylla' from FH?

If not, it would've been polite to credit his/her post that you've copied & pasted. ;)

25th anniversary has the original ending (ie. not theatrical)
Version you've never seen has a lot of stuff in it, like the spider walk, new scenes here and there, and the original ending.

Never heard of 'recut', to my knowledge, there was never a version called that.

I think that "recut" is just the Remastered version. Called Remastered cuz the sound was remastered.

And the original version definitely doesn't have the Crabwalk. I have a 1-CD version of this (The only copy of it in English I've found on Emule) and I just looked it over and it's not the Remastered Version.

I might keep both just because I'm an obsessive collector, though.

Bwaa haa. This board rules.

Up to you to decide that. The original theatrical version doesn't have the crabwalk, though.

And that, in my opinion, is the best scene in the movie. Maybe the best scene in any Horror movie ever.

Getting it on with Jesus...somebody has to.He said the only way he could nail anything is if a cross was strapped to his back :o

Saw the prequel in the theatre a while ago during my absence.Best part of that movie is the beginning with about 100,000 or so people all crucified and impailed.I started getting aroused after I saw that...to bad the rest of the movie was weak.
So how many versions of the DC of the original is there out now?

I have it on DVD so I call your bluff

I got it before the 25th anniversary so I don't think its the 25th anniversary edition, and it doesn't say any other junk on the case about recuts or anything.

Tis a dual sided, cropped pan scan on one side, 1.85:1 on the other.

edit:
"Widescreen version: presented in a "matted" widescreen format preserving the 1.85:1 aspect ratio of it original theatrical exhibition. Enhance for 16:9 widescreen tvs"

0, I don't believe there has been one director's cut... Did Friedkin do any of these cuts?

I fold. Oh course I did say "think". Amazon shows some out-of-print jobs, new and used.

Gonna try to find a link...

Well if nothing turns up and there's some demand I can arrange a release. But I mean, its not the best cut I don't think personally :)
