Nope... I don't know what happened either, I'm guessing it wasn't us because of that. Backup now it seems, I'll have a look and see what info I can dig up regarding that super freaky message some of you probably saw.

Well it seems the MPAA are going fruity loop. I got an email from Bill just a few moments ago and it seems, since several sites are hosted on station51, that the host has been targetted:
Quote:
The MPAA is breathing down my neck right now about sites that are promoting the piracy of movies and music via ed2k and BT. Your site falls in to this category ... A lot of major sites have been hit and some of the smaller sites are now being aimed for.

Quote:
I think you might have to find another shared hosting provider :( And it sucks because I really hate pushing sites like yours away. I've always enjoyed hosting it. :(

If you can't find another host, I'd like it if you'd close the ED2K portion of your site to users until something can be figured out... Its getting way hot around here.

So I'm going to have to look for a new host most likely. Please contact me if you know of one that doesn't mind ed2k links (which is all thats here).

Waiting on a response. May have to close down the ed2k bit for a little while.

Read this for accurate info on the situation, dd, as far as I gather, isn't an area of dispute or anything, its the ed2k links being hosted on station51s main server thats the problem. So I think what it boils down to is we need a new host.

Quote:
Okay, so I've temporarily disabled ed2k links in response to a request from our current host. Given this recent raid malarky in the news, it was a sensible request, since the server that hosts this site contains business sites and other personal homepages.

Seems that dead-donkey is going to have to find a new host. We really can't afford much, and hit count isn't high. Our maximum bandwidth usage has been ~15GB (accurate specs if you click read more), so technical specs aren't high at all.
If you can provide hosting, please contact me and let us know.
Feeback

More accurate bandwidth usage figures are as follows. To get these specs, I looked for months on each subdomain that got the most hits then looked at the total transferred. So there's are extremely liberal:

Forums:
5,707,160 (Just over 5GB)

Sci-fi:
2,581,381 (2.5GB)

www:
9,131,390 (9GB)

Our current host is wanting to seperate ed2k sites from the main server. I have not been contacted by the MPAA or any such organisation, the site content is purely ed2k, and the userbase is relatively small.
Contact me anyway!

Just a brainfart, but couldn't you switch to the same hosting provider that Fileheaven has? They seem to be unaffected in this mess...

Good, so everything is cool for the time being.

yes, I will be asking along those lines.

Unfortunately the person who setup that hosting has been offline for a while now.

Why not mask ed2k links? Ok, most of you don't like my idea to run freenet just for links, but do we really need clickable 'ed2k://xxxxx:xxxx'? For me xxxx:xxxxx would be sufficient. Even those could be masked xxxx:xxxx+1. ;-)

This kind of shit just urks me! They will go on a blitz right now but i'm sure things will quiet down in a short time. All these other countries need to quit kissing the MPAA's ass and get some of there own laws to stop them from controlling everybody else.

I would make sure you protect yourself first and foremost Spud. If the site can't host ed2k links for the time being that shouldn't be a problem. But just make sure you don't get your ass raided by the local authorities. I rather have this place with no links than to see you in a bunch of trouble with the law.

Keep up the great work Spud! :beerchug:

i was thnking about that idea too, what happens if links are not clickable anymore? just give the hashes or filenames? it would be the same, but maybe legally not and would at least get some more time...
