The Vault (2000)
Directed by: James Black

It's hard to know what demographic this movie was made for. It's like some ghetto-style Blair Witch Project Lite, with an African-American cast set in an abandoned school. It is supposedly about a history teacher and a group of students who go into the school to retrieve any historical memorabilia before it gets torn down, but end up finding something horrifying in the basement. Sounded like a good premise on the cover description, except that the story is woefully bad and completely unfrightening. It is far too poorly written and executed to satisfy any serious horror fan. It certainly has the production values of an After-school special, and could have been a good scary movie for kids, except that it has far too much profanity and gore.

I was looking into the AR, but all I could find was 1:33:1 and when you play this on 16:9 it looks great. Also, some round objects I found in the movie are actually round in this rip, so I still have my doubts on the AR.

You said it yourself, AR should most likely be around 16:9. I'm guessing it's an anamorphic/non-anamorphic input problem. Forgot to check the right input type in GK maybe?

Anyway, the AR error is pretty obvious in the screens you posted. Just forget the round objects for a moment and take a look at this guy:

Maybe re-rip? You've just posted it. Trash this one and do it again. :wacky:

I concur, I'd be interested in a proper rip as well. :beerchug:

Hehe, that's too wide and a wrong AR as well. GK is set up, tomorrow I should have a rip with the correct AR.

Did you just blow up the width of my screenshot, or did you find this elsewhere?

OK, new rip posted including new specs and screens. One pixel of bad cropping at the top, but I'm not gonna re-rip it again. This one pixel will be invisible anyway on TV.

Thought I'd pick up on this one because that isn't really the issue with bad cropping. With bad cropping it doesn't really matter if its 1 or 50 lines of pixels, and it has nothing to do with it 'looking bad' on the screen when a black border is there, as during mpeg4 playback black borders will always be added to the encode by the playback device... matting is good, it serves the purpose of maintaining AR; the issue is that bad cropping eats up video bit distribution and is not needed with MPEG4

MPEG2 has no header information specifying the intended AR so it needs encoding with matting so it displays correctly, whilst MPEG4 does specify how the picture should be displayed which is why black borders are unnessacary encoding defects (bitrate waste).

Make sense? :)

Yes, it does. I thought I'd post it to see what the reactions would be. So thanks for yours ;)

Seeing what the image looks like, I didn't loose too much bitrate imo.

Well you are more okay than otherwise because of the low runtime, still, very good idea to always crop correctly, every little bit helps :)

Yes, I know. In GK it looked good yesterday, I had to crop off some 8 pixels on both flanks, but the top and bottom looked OK. Therefore I'm a bit surprised it came out like this.

Btw: I think it does matter if it's 1 or 50 pixels when it comes to losing bitrate. You lose more with the 50 pixels.
