Plot:
ASSAULT! JACK THE RIPPER is one of those films that just ain't gonna be everyone's cup of tea. It's brutal in it's depiction of rape and murder and has pretty much no redeeming value in terms of "entertaining" cinema - and that's exactly why it is such a "classic" of the pinky genre. At a time when many other pinky films dealt with sleazy subject matter in a more "fun" and tongue-in-cheek manner, ASSAULT! went straight for the jugular, or more appropriately, crotch... Two restaurant co-workers realize their penchant for brutal rape and murder after a mishap with a whacked-out hitch-hiker. As the two find that murder is their only aphrodisiac - things get out of hand. They continue to "feed" off of each other and pick up random strangers to do their "business" with. Homeboy finds that he has a thing for stabbing the victims in the cooch - this appears to be his major "turn-on". Homegirl starts to get a little to clingy and jealous when she realizes that he's been doing some "moonlighting" on his own. This all results in the end of their relationship, among other things... There's nothing really comical or fun about ASSAULT! (except for the strange disco soundtrack...). It appears that the main goal of this film is to shock and disgust, which it does appropriately enough - especially for it's 1976 time-stamp. Although the crotch-gouging is not "graphically" shown, the sound FX and inference of what's going on is enough to be disturbing. This is a rare film as it predates a lot of more sadistic films that became notorious throughout the late 70's through today. Again, not a film for all tastes, but for those that are looking for something a little "rougher"...this may be the one

Plot outline....:
The film follows a pair of skuzzy restaurant workers, he a chef and
she a waitress, who screw up and kill a hitchhiker one night only to find
out that they seriously enjoy killing - in fact, they get off on it in a
big way! Once the pair figure out that they like it as much as they do,
they set out for more of it and go about kidnapping and murdering pretty
young women (their modus operandi appears to be vaginal stabbing - some
not so subtle phallic symbolism!). This happy and mutually dysfunctional
relationship soon starts to crumble though, as the chef decides he no
longer needs his female partner and opts to go off on a killing spree of
his own.
Filled with all of the rape, misogyny and gratuitous sex you'd expect
from the glory days of the Nikkatsu sex and violence films, Assault! Jack
The Ripper is a wonderfully mean spirited slasher that borrows a little
bit from the Italian Giallo cycle but not without putting its own unique
cultural spin on the stalk and slash formula. There are definitely plenty
of bloodier and nastier films from the same genre out there in terms of
what is shown on screen, but there's an air of degradation and nastiness
to this picture that sets it apart a bit.
Yasuharu Hasebe, who served as Seijin Suzuki's assistant before
branching out on his own and giving us classics like the psychedelic pop
slice Black Tight Killers and the nasty Rape! The 13th Hour, keeps the
action moving quickly. The film is shot with plenty of style and there's
a certain slickness to the cinematography and lighting that is well
complimented by a fantastic and incredibly quirky sounding jazz score.
Those searching for the most extreme examples of the genre may be let
down, as most of the violence is more inferred then graphically
portrayed, but there's a genuinely unsettling atmosphere here that
really helps out this tale of two losers brought together by their love
of sexual violence only to be torn apart by what brought them together
in the first place. Not a film for all tastes, but definitely worth a
watch for fans of the genre or anyone who can appreciate well made
exploitation.

This comes from the R2 Geneon Dvd that the image was posted from above with custom subs...that dvd is superior to the Mondo Mabro dvd in image and apperantly....runtime.Not sure what the differences are...have not sat down and watched this copy yet and have just skimed through to make sure everything was in synch and all that.
