i'm not sure if is coincidence or not but i have recently had my STB upgraded from an old Pace one to a new Samsung one by NTHelL so that i can take advantage of the upgraded bandwidth (2meg line up from 750k). but that is where things start to get a bit strange....

i think my speeds took a big dive since then on emule but can't be sure as did not look at my pc for a coupla days prior to the STB being swapped out so cant be sure that the prob didnt start before then (i only jus remembered as the engineer was due that i better shut emule down, jus in case.)

well in the few days since then i have noticed that my d/l speed rarely goes above 25KB/s and it has not gone above 65KB/s!!! i'm not even getting 1GB a day!! :( (compared to 5GB+ before) and my u/l isn't going above 10K!!! - i think the u/l is still a poor 200kbs but should still give a usable 20KB+

excluding the very rare horror most of the files in my queue have plenty of sources (some in the 100's, some even more)

as a test i have done a few speed tests like adslguides but they show what i would expect, i have also doen http downloads from places like download.com and they come down at a respectable 200-230KB/s. i get fine speeds from an ftp site. and grabbin files from newsgroups is fine as well....

i am connected to razorback2 and have high id

i have tried changing the ports in emule (and my firewall as well)
i have tried 3 diff mods to my usual one but the same.....

have been using emule for 2+ years now and never had such poor speeds :(

any advice?

the only other thing that i can think has changed on my pc is that a few weeks ago i installed the win2k sp4 rollup1 patch but if that was to have an effect i would have thought it would have done so immediatly not a couple of weeks later......absolutely nothing else has changed on my net pc

am gunna try the latest morphxt mod now see if that makes a difference

no advice, anyone? :(

i have been trying to work out what is going on here but not much luck

have tried diff NICs, several diff mods, changed ports quite a few times, ran with out a firewall for a while :o and had my cable box swapped 3 times in the last week now. i have no virus or spyware.

it has become very frustrating. my average download speed over the last week has been just 9.5KB/s whereas my upload has been a steady 13-14K!! my u/l has actually been higher than my d/l :wacky: no1 can call me a leech!! but neither are getting anywhere near what they should be
the only thing i havent tried so far is a format and rebuild but that seems a bit drastic but i am completely baffled.......

nope, sometimes emule just goes very slow, its a p2p program, the speed is dependant on other peers as much as you.

You should just check the standard stuff, windows doesn't have any hidden shit in it, your firewalls are correct, your isp isn't blocking ports.

The fact your upload does't seem that bad, so i don't know if there is an actual program with connectivity.

I always thought the NTL upgrades offers were to throttled/capped services?

it wasnt an offer was a network wide speed upgrade so had no choice and had to get a samsung box as the old pace ones couldnt take above 1 meg. also afaik only the 1meg (lowest tier now) is capped currently.

is weird cos most files r kummin down at just 0.5K

what is worse i am now getting '- Connection refused. Your IP is currently blacklisted.' in my emule logs today when trying to connect to servers!! have got plenty enuf sources from kad tho.

are you static ip? there are ranges of ips that are sometimes bought up that are too new to be free from all the blocklists, there's also entire ranges blocked because they have been used by hackers in the past.

You could try refresh your ip incase its being blocked, but for the record, you get that message if you try and connect to a server too quick, it doesn't mean much.

I'm on the same set-up and having no problems.
However, I recently had issues with a site blocking my IP...although the IP they displayed wasn't actually mine.

Turns out, whilst NTL gives you a static IP, they also use a transparent proxy. This can sometimes be picked up instead of your genuine one and cause problems.
No idea if that might be causing any of the issuess you describe, but you can follow the instructions in the following link to specify a different cache in your area which might help.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/article.php?c=16

Only other thing is to change ports in emule, although I assume you tried that already.

@spud with ntl U can register up to 5 MAC addresses (a quick thing to do online) with only one accessing their network at any time but they each get assigned their own ip and the only time my ip changes is when i change NIC's or when i get a replacement STB so technically is dynamic but in practice is effectively static. i have also released my ip then renewed and got diff one as well as changing NICs.

@Dia(mk2) i'm def not going thru a transparent proxy (when i 1st got BB i was, and had all sorts of probs browsing the web, but they stopped using them in my area after a few months and all my probs went away but edonkey (as i was using then) was not affected iirc only retrieving web pages. i know they are introducing new ones but so far not in my area.

i still am experiencing the probs and have had more time to do diagnostics. altho online speed tests show no probs infact i am getting probs downloading frome the web, downloads 50MB+ seem to hang after a while and is taking me more than one or two attempts to get. i get time outs when trying to retrieve mail from NTL'S mail servers maybe 2 out of 7 times. when retrieving message bodies from newsgroups i am getting connection refused or time out after about 3 or 4 messages and keep having to restart the download

oh well, i have another engineer coming out b4 teh weekend but this time they gunna test the cables in my flat & the power levels etc in the (junction) box outside as well as swap another new STB. really hope it gets sorted then as am getting real frustrated and my average download speed on emule is not much better than dialup atm :(

well the engineer came and did lots of tests this time and apparantly the signal i was gettin was too strong!! i am only like 10 yards from the box outside and was gettin top level power which was causing the attenuator on the back of my STB to melt the inner cladding of the cable!! they replaced the cabel and lowered the power coming to my STB and things have def improved in some ways.

i not had timeouts when trying to get email. my average speeds on teh mule have increased slightly from <10K/s to 30-40K (still not good tho seeing as i was getting a pretty constant 99K/s before this started happening!!) i have seen it go above 100K now but not for very long......i have also started to experiment with BT now and on some files have had speeds in xs of 160K!! so this is puzzling the fuk out of me...at least i had a few movies finish this last week (i had 2 in total in the previous 3 weeks - whoopee!!)

who knows if nthell have some sort of intelligent port throttling software they are trialling in my area? is jus so weird.

but maybe with other developments with nthell sending out letters to high users atm maybe this is a blessing in disguise for now. i was downing 200GB+ a month b4 this!! now i'll b lucky to hit the freakin caps!!

well i now have 2 weeks off work now so hopefully have the time to sort this out ('cept i got Reading festie in a few days!! :D ) we shall see
