First off, i'm relatively new to the avi->to->DVD-R process..

Alot of the movies i download are in 2 parts (mostly DivX) and I like to burn them as DVDs to play in my DVD player and give to my friends who don't have the luxury of the internet or the knowledge of p2p.

I've searched on message boards looking for the simplest avi joiners. I've tried 3 or 4 different ones. And none of them seem to work for me.

The one i have now is Quick AVI Joiner 2.0 which seems to have a ton of options but i think it might be too advanced for me. (even the help file seems geared toward more advanced users)

Problem with Devils Rejects (DivX) (used a 1 click avi joiner)(i forget the name)

1. I Choose the 2 (one was 780 MB and other was 702 MB) files to be joined...
2. They take the 5 or 6 hours to encode.
3. I watch the joined movie on my PC before burning to DVD. (played fine but the joined filesize said (780 MB ?!?!)

Problem with Ichi the Killer (used Quick AVI Joiner)

1. Chose the 2 files...
2. Took 8 or 9 hours to encode...
3. Viewed joined files but there was no picture.

Problem with Murder Set Pieces

same as Devil's Rejects.

So basically I am looking for the simplest avi joiner that will do the job with a button click or two. I don't have the money right now to buy a DVD/DivX player and I don't have the time or patience to to learn about all these codecs and the nitty gritty stuff.
All I have is a love for these movies and a desire to share them with my friends.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

you should have nandub installed on your machine anyway (if you don't shame on you!), that's simply -> File>open, then File->append blah blah, and choose the second part of the avi.

Then you make sure video>Direct Stream copy and audio->direct stream copy are selected, then you go file->save as, and save the joined file.

Then you either:
a) You then use gspot and a calculator to figure out what size boarders you need to add top and bottom when you scale up the picture. ie. PAL 720x350 = 0x206 = 103 pixel boarder at the top and bottom.

You then create an avisynth script to add the boarders on, and apply any filters you wish... this entire process can be simplified by loading your avi into gknot and using its avisynth creation to make a basic avi to modify. You then convert the audio, and figure out how much space that will take, you then give ~100mb to menus or whatever, then you use the bitrate calculator to figure out the remaining bitrate. You then encode in CCE with the calculated settings.

Once you have your encoded audio and video streams you drop them into dvdlab, after making some menu screens in psp or photoshop quickly and hit compile, then you burn.
b) if your a tad simple or want to do something slightly quicker, blindly add it to TMPGenc and ignore all the aspect ratio problems, etc. Aim it for about most of a DVD and hit encode. Then re-encode your audio, and drop the video and audio into dvdlab (making the menu in psp/photoshop)

Both shouldn't take 10mins to setup, but you'll have encoding time on top of that. CCE is much longer but better quality, TMPGenc has a babystep GUI but a worse encoding engine.

As for the specific "no video problem", you probably don't have the video codec installed, probably only ffdshow which is a decoding filter, not a codec. To do any encoding, you need the specific codec installed. Gspot can tell you if you have the codecs and the sticky topic above your head in this forum has the homepages.

ps. mpeg2 needs to be wiped out :matrix: :matrix: Would be so much easier if everyone had a decent player / xbox.

ahh thank you very much!

shame on me i never heard of nandub!

great program though (just downloaded it) :D

i almost quit trying to author any DVD project because of these problems. It seemed like a waste of time to make menus n stuff if the video wouldn't turn out.

This place is great thanks again

hey spud can you answer a couple questions i have concerning dvdlab (this is a GREAT program but advanced for me)

loaded my m2v , mp2, subtitle file for the movie GOZU

i made this kick ass dvd menu with trivia and a bio / interview page for the movie

I compiled the DVD...everything seemed fine

when it was done it had umm 10 VOB files i think..but there was no IFO files?
Is there a setting I don't have turned on to create them?(My settings are all default)

also after viewing the VOB files all i have is the movie..no menus..

this is my best guess right now..

i hafta convert the menus to AVI-then convert to m2v. and load into dvdlab and then compile again.

No, you don't need to convert the menus, that's what DVD-lab is all about - it outputs the menus you create and video to the correct format (VOB/IFO).

Have you tried deleting all the VOB set it produces and exporting it again? I've used dvd-lab for about 2 years and never had that problem.

Yeah, it's a shame if you've put a lot of work into the project.

When I've done them it's just a menu page and play button.
