Hi, I've been getting some really jerky motion from AVI files transferred to DVD with various programs. Everything from WinAVI to VSO to DIKO produces this result. It's only been with files with a 23.976 framerate. I've tried 3:2 pulldown options with certain programs but the results have been the same. Jerky motion. Whether I make 25fps PAL DVD or 29.976 NTSC. Short of getting a DVD player that plays Divx/Xvid have any of you found a program that can successfully transfer 23.976? I've even tried keeping the framerate the same, but none of my authoring apps can handle that framerate.

Thanks

I use dvd santa for this as well, but it's not any good on 29.976. Then the sound gets out of sync. 23.976 and 25.000 is never any problem. If you have the same problems with dvd santa it's maybe something with your codec's. :)

Before I got a modified XBOX I used to use DVD2SVCD and CCE (Cinemacraft Encoder) to convert AVI to MPEG2 for DVD.

There's a guide here : http://uk.geocities.com/misterbarlow

Of course, once the file is converted, you'll need an authoring package to get it into DVD format for burning. I used DVD-Lab Pro. A little extra work, but the quality is worth it. All AVI's I converted using that method were acceptable quality and noticably less jerky than films converted using TMPGEnc.

I've tried DVD2SVCD and CCE. Even progs like The Film Machine and AVI2DVD. I've had some success with AVI2DVD, and freeware encoders. Meaning less motion artifacting. But it's still quite noricable. Even TMPGEnc created stunning looking video out of Xvid, but motion jerks. The irony is I've never tried DVDSanta. I had heard the audio sucked.(Mpeg audio instead of AC3, and sync issues) But tonight I'll try it for making a PAL disc. Baring that, I'll try and re-install my codec package. Thanks for the replies.

Not 100% sure, but I think dvdsanta keeps the ac3 sound.
I have never had a sync problem except with 29.970.

you shouldn't get sync problems if you use besweet to framerate convert the audio properally.

The best long term option would be not to convert to DVDr and invest in a decent player (ie xbox), but i'd have to agree with DVD2SVCD and CCE.

I've tried DVD Santa 4.0. I couldn't believe the diference between this and all the other encoders. For 23.976 to 25fps it's very good. No noticable frame drops or jerks on the AVI file I converted. A/V isn't as good as CCE or TMPGEnc, but there's always a trade off. I can live with it.

In the past I tred demuxing the 23.976 file to audio and video streams and converting them to PAL seperately. Yes, I even used Besweet for the audio converson. It was never entirely successful. It was usually in sync, but I still encountered frame drops. Never mind the fact that it was a more time intensive process.

For now it seems that DVD Santa is the best and quickest solution. Thanks to all who answered.

 yeah, i wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the people asking in one of these threads :googley:

Downgrading from mpeg4 to mpeg2 is still baffling for me, its like sawing your legs off... but hey-ho, :outsider:

You can't sell it as a dvd if it's mpeg-4 though
