Free for all movies in the public domain. I was suprised to see a lot of famous classics and many horror movies all with expired copyrights.

By my reckoning James Whale's Frankenstein should enter the public domain this year, don't movie copyrights last 75 years? Or is it 50 in which case there should be loads of horror classics in PD. Don't quote me on that though cos you'll probably find Universal have re-registered it or something.

Exerpt from the Nalo press public domain book - Regarding movies published in the US only.

All films before 1923 are in public domain and
under the copyright law in effect at the
time, all films published between 1923 and
1963 received an initial copyright term of
28 years. They were also eligible to receive
a second term of 67 years if the copyright
owner (or someone acting on their behalf)
filed a renewal application with the Copyright
Office during the 28th year after
publication. If the copyright owner failed to
do this, the film entered the public domain
on January 1 of the 29th year after the year
it was published.
EXAMPLE: Little Shop of Horrors 1960 version directed by Roger
Corman and starring Jack Nicholson, copyright was not renewed
so entered the public domain.
