I don't think you did, Spud... Want me to do it ?
And by the way, here I can, nobody will know what I'm talking about, but you do : NON sci-fi movie, nore horror, even if everything is done to let you think it is, but at the end, you just understand it is something about supernatural visions... Disappointed ! it's a dark fantasy thriller, nothing else... Even if the script is based on a book that is a science fiction story, with men in black and strange aliens entities, the writers have f*cked everything...
Sorry for the ones who won't understand what I'm talking about...
See you spud, thanx for your patience !

mothman prophecies? Its a scifi dude... you sound just like d0c, he insists there's gotta be a robot in it for it to be scifi and keeps posting stuff like post apocalypitic can't be scifi yadda yadda. I'm almost positive there's a lot of claptrap about powerlines or alternate dimensions or some bog bot in mothman and they have premonitions and visions, and that explains how the mothmen appear. They are freakin aliens or something, and they see them through some transdimensional portal/visions Its long and droll as hell, but its still got enough to quantify the additional scifi label it has, even if it is a thriller and all that bog bot too... I'm gonna rewatch, but i think the whole point its based on "real" reports of alien sightings Hollywood messed it up, but its still pretty scifiy from what i remember, unless i fell asleep at the alien point.
I'll rewatch it when that rip completes, but its downloading under my scifi category which seems pretty apt, even if its just supported by official reviews, and imdb, etc and not from my memory.
btw, on topic, i was visiting to post about nancy's watch! LMAO! If you've watched this movie recently, you'll know what I mean Nancy's watch deserves a scifi spinoff of its own...

Mothman Prophecies IS NOT A SCI FI MOVIE ! Dude...
dOc is wrong and so are you...
I'm an ancient Science Fiction reader, I used to select manuscripts in an editing house in Paris, dude... and I think we have a problem with defining (correct in english ?) science fiction... And as scifi is different from science fiction, you may be right... maybe it's a scifi movie, but I won't admit that it is a Science Fiction one...
And anyway, dude, we, [Fr]OGS are always right, even if you're the boss...
Anyway, who cares if it's a scifi or not, this movie is a piece of sh*t, to me...
Arf !
Did I tell you, you were doin' a fabulous work ?
(even if you know nothing about science fiction )

say it till your blue in the face, unfortunately i don't think your going to have prove exactly why it doesn't have a single element that make it a scifi movie, and as i explain later, the scifi genre is very weak as a concept and easy to classify because of its inferiority/unsuitability of being to other less rigid emotion and style genres.
It boils down to the numerous references, theories and stories supporting dimensions, visions and UFOs/aliens, and it isn't in a form that makes reference, it is part of the movie that it is understood that they are supernatural alien/dimensional weirdo moth dudes. Even if it doesn't make it any less of a crappy mystery movie, its hit the minimum requirements for scifi classification.
This isn't exactly like people who insist that alien is primarily a scifi film not a horror movie, since you seem to be claiming that this is not a scifi at all yet it is easily classified as a scifi with very little effort and seems to be unanimously done in this way. Even a decent enough plot synopsis covers exactly why it can be subclassified as scifi, and it is pretty easy to do so dispite protests. Just do mothman prophecy and scifi emperical study and you'll see the sheer weight of opinion is against you, ie. hence why imdb says it is, hence why the book is so often stated to be a scifi novel, and countless other critics and reviewers and movie cataloguing sites. Hence why its in the scifi section at my local video store (presumably because its too paranormal (ie. scifi) to be passed off as a straight thriller and people just can't watch paranormal stuff... makes sense they trump the scifi to an issue) ... the film even premiered at the SCIFI-London convention in this country *snip*... of course, there's a reason it comes to this, and its the, arguably light, but still present scifi content. The important thing to remember about scifi classification is that its a checklist of content, no emotion, or style like with other genres.
Remember scifi is perhaps the weakest of all major genre description, or rather the easiest to classify as given that its based on entirely different concepts to pretty much every other major genre; its a freak. Horror, drama, action\adventure all have emotional and plot or synopsis indicators, where as scifi merely has to have a certain item or setting from a checklist. In reality its a on off thing, and scifi movies aren't scifi movies for the sake of scifi, its a thriller or horror, or whatever, but it meets the quantifying object/item/setting parameter.
And mothman, dispite the protests meets several checklist parameters that make it a scifi. I think the director made some comments about it being a mystery, not a scifi, but the problem is that he really is ignoring the weaker scifi quantifying boundries. Its a thriller, but it is also content elements of scifi, and horror, and boredom...
I think its going to have to be one of those deal with it amigo moments.... now stop trolling this thread and troll the mothman monstrosity thread mr
I have my genre arguments all the time, and they have no relevance, it just pisses everyone off. Like the continual Alien is a horror movie primarily vs. the people that just don't get what alien is about and clasify it as primarly a scifi movie. However, that's not saying it isn't one or the other, just of the two, what best describes alien, and its obvious that its a horror movie
erm... but maybe someone spliced mothmen into an episode of star trek, but i'm pretty sure richard gere never starred in any trek [/list]

*Split and Kick*
Please note, no one is saying this movie is in the slightest bit good or recommending it. I've not seen it for many, many years, the year of its release iirc, and i remember it being pretty gash

oh and site specific, many sources list Mothman Prophecies with a horror subgenre too.
Thiller / Mystery / Scifi / Horror
I can see why, even if that's a relative non-issue in the scheme of things, its not as obvious as the paranormal = scifi classifcation which you can easily do.
Its a thriller movie, that just happens also to hit on the other inclusive genres.

Well the director and crew (excluding richard gere mind you) claim its not a scifi because its real
The only thing that was real was that bridge thing methinks. Its like Texas Chain Saw and that other one Wolf Creek in that sense, marketing people

yeah that's how i felt too... not cool... not cool!
There was another movie released at the same time that looked the same in the trailers, you know one of these movies studios fire off by stealing the plot line to combat/cashin... or maybe i just imagined it?

Yeah like that video shit King Kong rip-off or the Titanic rip-off that both got out just a few months before the theater shitbuster..
Hmmm can't remember about Mothman though... damn now I'm gonna think about it all day... Probably saw it too if there was a rip-off.
Richard Gere is sexy like a horny duck

Suit 1: "we have to do something about this mothman blockbuster... have you read the script? Its awesome!"
Suit 2: "who's in it?"
...
Suit 3: "Richard Gere"
Suit 2: "oh dear lord, we need to launch a pre-emptive strike"
how little they knew...
