Quote: | Sam Dunn is a 30-year old anthropologist who wrote his graduate thesis on the plight of Guatemalan refugees... Sam Dunn is a 30-year old anthropologist who wrote his graduate thesis on the plight of Guatemalan refugees. Recenly he has decided to study the plight of a different culture, one he has been a part of since he was a 12-year old: the culture of heavy metal. Sam sets out on a global journey to find out why this music has been consistently stereotyped, dismissed and condemned and yet is loved so passionately by its millions of fans. Along the way, Sam explores metals' obsession with some of life's most provacative subjects - sexuality, religion, violence and death - and discovers some things about the culture that even he can't defend. Shot on location in the UK, Germany, Norway, Canada and the US, this documentary is the first of its kind. It is both a defense of a long-misunderstood art form and a window for the outsider into the spectacle that is heavy metal. |

Have you seen it yet? Once you do you might see a different funny side to your comment - hint: Alice Cooper
Just watched this yesterday and thought it was very good - a must see for any metal fans out there. Surprisingly well made documentary I thought (Before seeing it I were expecting it to be pretty dodgy to be honest).
I reckon non-metal fans and/or documentary fans would find it pretty interesting too.
cheers

GrindCallus wrote: | I thought this docu sucked. I'm really very tired of metal history, though, all they do is mention the same bands and completely ignore modern forms of metal. I didn't watch the end though, so maybe they gave credit to bands I care about. From what I watched the didn't mention Slayer or At the Gates, so fuck this doc (its Canadian isn't it?). All IMO remember Thanks for the black metal docu! Some real metal, not that pussyass hair band/nwbhm crap that gets all the credit. |
Slayer is in it. Interviewed and all.
The documentary is, for a docu on metal, not bad. I'll watch the black metal docu (although there are way too much docu's on norwegian black metal) after i downloaded it, thanks for the link on that one.
And what's wrong with NWOBHM?? Without it there wouldn't be any Slayer (heavily influenced directly by the mighty Priest for example). Priest made metal in general sound what it sounds like nowadays and especially the three albums Sad Wings, Sin after Sin and Stained Class are great! The stuff after Point of Entry is not so great but i like Painkiller a LOT.

GrindCallus wrote: | I'm too young fer cock-rock, I guess. I missd the Slayer part, dammit! I just think NWBHM is given all this credit, I'm tired of its sound/image. I just dont like songs about dragons and leatherclad bikers. I just dont relate to it. Not dissing Iron Maiden/Judas Priest, they are the top of the pile. I'd like to see some insight on the newer scene. (Probably have to wait till all the old farts die/lose speech) |
I'm quite sure you're not younger than me so that's not an excuse. And i must confess that i listen way more to black, death and thrash metal than to NWOBHM etc. but i think those old bands really deserve much more respect since they play(ed) GREAT music and were very important for forming of the genre. I'll take any (also the ones i don't like) Priest album over most of the generic new black/death metal releases. Especially the technical br00tal wigger 'death metal'.
People just calling a band like Priest gay, and i don't care about Halford's sexuality, deserve a hard slap in the face to wake them up.
Not talking about you now though since you're not dissing them you say, hehe.
And i also would like to see a documentary on nowadays extreme metal genres but it's just not a big enough thing (as in interested people) and way too big (in a sense of amount of information to cover) at the same time.
