I think John Doe's version is open matte

Not too sure if the french version is better but it is widescreen.

On the left is the french release and on the right John Doe's
John Doe's release is more kind to the naked flesh

Also it seems sharper.
The French release hardly shoes more on the left and right. Who knows, it might be a cropped version!
