You've ftp'd the addons to the wrong place, re ftp them making sure you're overwriting the old files

Yay, it's working. I'd got em in the right place but hadn't overwritten the old files
Thanks very much for the help, and the excellent guide.

never got a chance to say thanks, so there... thanks!
with this guide and spud extra .hlp i have been using my xbox as player for all the mpeg-4 vids I dload and also I was able to make xbmc my default dash in no time thanks to the easy instructions provided by spud.
next in the to do is to update the xbmc for the latest one and get rid of all those apps I don't even use on the xbox.
btw, I haven't used the xbox for the intended purpouse since I bought it (that is, playing xbox games)

Ok, I'm the proud owner of a sofftmodded xbox now. Getting the necessary files onto my USB media was a bitch. AR wouldn't take it so I had to use Xebian Linux to copy the files. Once I had them on the xbox everything went ok.
I'm still testing stuff but it seems like xbmc won't play subs. I've tried srts and idx-subs. Same DVD-R, same filename - nothing.
I'm assuming I need a newer version of xbmc maybe? I'm using the one from PCA's RAR file (xbmc 1.1.0 - Jan 1st 2005). Any ideas?
Oh, and Spud - no, It wasn't THAT easy. Took some blood sweat and tears.

have you turned the subs on? you like press that little button and then clickerty click the enable subs thingy. I think right back to the early days, xbmc always picks up on the subs as long as you've named everything correctly so i doubt that's it.

I'm stupid ok, but not that stupid. I obviously needed some key remapping. It's done now.
Anyway, I've updated to the latest xbmc now. Not sure if I'll keep it though. The damn thing always crashes when I tell it to return to the dashboard, which is especially annoying since I want to have xbmc as my default dashboard on startup. Not being able to return to the 'normal' unleashx from there ain't exactly what I had in mind. I'll see if I can figure something out.
You staying up late too?

you need to delete your saved files, in the nfo it tells you the exact procedure. Essentially, your using the old save to use the new dash and that's going to cause problems.
You might have to check your xml file to make sure its not messed up too
Remember, the one in your dashboards folder points to the location on c and the one on c doesn't point anywhere. Make sure your default.xbe is also copied over.
Should be stable then.
edit: oh they changed it so you now do a shortcut instead of all that home stuff.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow and let you know if it works.
Essentially everything else works now. I'll run some further tests tomorrow: DVD+/-R, DVD-/+RW, mkv and so on. Plus I'm downloading some games (PAL ones and NTSC).

Updated to teh latest version about 4 minutes after that last reply and have absolutely no problems. I'm using 666 build. I take it you've omitted this then:
The author of the build wrote: | UPGRADE TIPS________________________________________________________________ If you're updating from a VERY old/bad build you may get issues. Follow these simple rules: o Replace (FTP OVERWRITE) all files in your XBMC folder with fresh ones from your new build o Delete old savegame/settings (from E:/TDATA/0face008) o In some rare cases some of the database files in XBMC/Albums/*.db may need manual deletion (usually if they are very old). Note: This loses all per file settings you made with the old build! |
Get Stubbs the Zombie, Fable Lost Chapters and Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2. They are about the only games I liked on the xbox

I've used a very recent t3ch build and I'm pretty sure that I've deleted stuff but maybe not the right files. I'll give it another try this afternoon and get back to you.
I have to do some maintenance on one of my computers now. Then I'll probably check my 'Demon Knight' rip.
I'm downloading Stubbs (50%) and have just clicked the other ones you mentioned minus KotR 1 - no English version on the mule (anymore?) I'm afraid.
To be continued...

Ok, here's another progress report:
Looks like I'm all set now. The xBox starts into XBMC and from there I can get back to unleashx. Keymappings are all done too i.e. 'open tray' on remote. Guess that's it.
Couple of things though:
1) I had the xbmc 666 build and I couldn't get it to search for subtitles in RARs (yes, I had the damn option checked!). I solved the problem by installing a later build of xbmc (June 26th 2006).
Can you please try a file with idx+sub (rarred) and tell me if it works on your xBox? Just out of curiousity - might be a bug or me being incompetent.
2) It seems to play pretty much everything as expected but I'm having a problem with UDF discs. I've tried the new UnSeen Matrix trilogy (1/2 DVD files) and the xBox wouldn't find the avis on the disc (UDF of course).
xbmc FAQ says that it won't play large files (1 gb+) from UDF discs. Is there a way around this (burning options maybe)? There's got to be a way to play 2gb+ files from DVD-/+R media.
I know I can have network shares but that's not what I have in mind.
Finally:
3) [rantmode] The damn Samsung DVD-Rom won't read CD-R media. I mean how gay is that, a DVD-Rom drive that doesn't read CD-R?! It never occured to me that such a thing could exist - fucking ridiculous... [/rantmode]
Thanks a lot.

1) it plays .idx and .rarred subs. Searching inside rars isn't a smart move (ie both idx and sub inside the rar, not just the sub as its supposed to be), it would slow down the launching of files no end. Just rar the larger file and keep your .idx unrarred, just like you would anyway (that's how subs can play on a pc, they need the idx outside of the rar).
If that's what you mean, then mine plays fine, you don't need to check the searching inside rar option.
The real answer is i have no idea, i've always burnt subs properally, else how else would they play on all standalones and pcs? If you don't put them as .idx and .rar, then you need to copy the movie and the subs to your hard drive to play, so i always burnt disc properally in the first place. Same goes for....
2) Quote: | xbmc FAQ says that it won't play large files (1 gb+) from UDF discs. |
I don't think that's true, I can play 1.45GB files from DVDr (on udf I assume). Check your flags in your xml file and also ensure you've got all the udf read modes on, that includes the detect as iso = no, and the seperate udf share.
I remember i had to change the detectasiso flag when i couldn't see files.
I still don't get why you'd burn as udf other than when you've hot large files I mean when you install nero, it gives you iso mode as default and hides udf further down. There's also the "Force UDF compatibility mode with xbox", you checked that too?
3) Mine doesn't play shitty brand cdrs, which is pretty much everything i used back then. My 2 year old stuff is either shit quality, crc'd or i've backed it up on better media so that's not really a problem. You could switch out your drive for another if its causing problems, although that can set you back about £20 and generally isn't worth it.
