I consider myself quite experienced in all things horror film. But, compared to alot of the people on here, I'm a pink-faced infant. So, with that in mind, I write this to you all asking for help. Some very good chums of mine are in a band, all of whom are very into their horror. They've recorded a tune that is kinda a tribute to horror films in general. They've asked me, aware of my love of fooling around with video cameras, to make a video for it. The idea is to keep images/footage of the band to a minimum and to include as much disturbing/horrific/horror imagery as I can in it. My question to all of you is:

What shall I put in it?

Please bear in mind that budget will be at a minimum. My sets will consist almost entirely of what I can knock up/improvise in my flat (apartment), and the Mrs isn't willing to go nude. :P

I'm basically seeking those small, otherwise non-threatining things that when viewd in a certain context, can be considered sinister/disturbing/scary.

Well, thanks for reading, and any suggestions GREATFULLY recieved. (I'll buy anyone who makes it to one of their gigs where I'm present an arseload of booze!)

Ta. Richy.

1. if they are band that do gigs, your really going to be restricted to public domain material, that is without a copyright. There's lots and lots of old black and white movies, including films like Night of the Living Dead that are free to chop up. If you use copyrighted material, there's always the risk that someone along the line will call you up to pay licensing for the video. Same goes for pictures and what not. You might think, well who cares? A club near me got told off for using Ash being strangled by his hand in Evil Dead 2
2. are you wanting to put in stock footage, or film your own and just want inspiration for filming your own?
3. Avoid the cliché's of modern horror, its just overdone.. that's slow motion stutter walking ala the ring, and stuff like that.
4. Check out Chris Cunningham's shorts, Rubber Johnny is his latest.

The old gross out points are deformity, night/sense of environmental danger/impending doom and/or gore/violence

Night of the living dead's a good one if the song is a tribute to horror films maybe mixed up with of your own camera work in the style of evil dead, just loved that moving camera. another good one if your gonna ignore copyright is the ball from phantasm, just the bit where it sticks in his head over and over to the beat of the song
Animals could be usefull, snarling dogs in confined spaces.
Good luck

watch this old liveshow of Skinny Puppy & watch what the guy is able to do onstage with a minimum of resources (trash, syrup, meat, intestines, rope,a hand doll,etc...)

you'll have plenty of ideas after watching this

btw,I personally recommend this gig/avant garde/performance to any of the regular guys at HHAH :beerchug:

Thanks for the suggestions/directions, chaps. Strictly original stuff, clipping from films is something they specified they didn't want.

Spud: Totally agree with your comment about avoiding modern horror cliches. Although effective if done well, they are getting a little tiresome.

Dr Phibes: I like the animals idea.

Anthro: Skinny Puppy? I'm on it. Cheers.

Any further ideas, please drop 'em in below.

Again, thanks.
Richy.

Human pieces in your refrigerator, like a cannibal serial killer. And some religion things, crufix, jesus all over the place. You´re purifying the world eating your enemies

Hello again.

If anyones interested, a snippet of what was done is available on the 'myspace' (forgive me, I should know better at 31 years old) page below. It's called 'Torture Scene!'

Not great, but hopefully OK. Any feedback would be very welcome.

Please bear in mind the above mentioned limitations though.

Oh, and obviously that's not the bands music on it yet.

Again, thanks for reading and suggestions.

Ta.

dude you have a really ... uhm no offence... gay myspace!

As for your video:

First yes avoid 'slick'. Dirt and film grain. Quick cuts are good too, no swirling superimposes or anything, thats lame.

If you want scary/creepy, you'll need suspense. During an intense part of the song, try a "when is it gonna hit?!" -type setup and make sure to deliver! If you know what I mean. (im drvnk)

You need some dark 'passages' (parts of video , not like hallways), where their are textural impressions of something scary, but not in-your-face demon shit.

No hair please and no strobe fx.

And finally, I've changed the MySpaz address to one just for our dumb-arsed horror efforts.

All our gory, childish cinematic toilet can be viewd on the front page of the new address below.

That way you won't ever have to degrade yourself like I have and actually set up a profile.

That's all I'm gonna finally annoy you all with. Thanks for yer patience. :beerchug: :beerchug: :beerchug: :beerchug:

Oh, Grindcallus, yup, you're right, the other one is screamingly gay. You'll (probably) be pleased to know I'm not though.

:moon:

So whenever I do the above, it's not an invite. :D

eh, what I always think is creepy, is when something seems so extraordinarily ordinary, like the 'leave it to beaver' family next door who always goes to church sundays, and when you're breaking into thier minivan to steal thier stereo, they have like a plastic bag full of rusty nails covered in sex lubricant under thier car seats, and on closer examination thier dog has a cockring or something, maybe leashes for thier children. Tupperware bowls full of poop, labeled and catalogued by texture and flavor.
err, that;s just what creeps me out.

and like those people who dress up at theme parks, maybe have one of those mascots, that turns out to be an acutal giant plush animal monster, hiding in plain site.
yeah, this is what happens when they cancel the X-files.
