Zatoichi Collection DVDrip *26 Films*
If you love samurai films, Zatoichi needs no introduction
for those of you unfamiliar with the Zatoichi film series...
wikipedia wrote: | Zatoichi is a fictional character featured in one of Japan's longest running series of films. The enduring popularity of the character has been likened to that of James Bond in Western countries. However, Zatoichi has become almost synonymous with one actor: Shintaro Katsu.
Set in the Edo period, Zatoichi is seemingly only a harmless blind masseur who wanders around the country making his living by gambling; however, he is also a highly skilled swordsman who uses a reverse-grip iaijutsu style and keeps his sword concealed within his cane.
The original series of 26 films featured Shintaro Katsu as Zatoichi. The first film was made in 1962 in black and white. The third film, in 1963, was the first to be filmed in color. The twenty-fifth film was made in 1973, and there was a pause of some 16 years before Katsu's last film, in 1989, which he directed himself. It should be noted that between 1974 and 1979, There was a Zatoichi television series starring Katsu which ran for 100 episodes.
The original series of movies features other popular fictional characters of the genre on two occasions: Zatoichi and the One Armed Swordsman (1971) connects with the Shaw Brothers series of Hong Kong produced movies directed by prolific director Chang Cheh. Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo (1970) features Toshiro Mifune playing a character named Sassa who bears a striking resemblance to his role as Sanjuro from the Akira Kurosawa films Yojimbo and Sanjuro. |
If you like lightning fast swordfights, backed with great storytelling, american western themes, and sprinkled with some slapstick humor...check it out. By the way, each film stands on its own, so there's no need to watch them in order. Although he learned to wield a sword only to gain respect, Ichi finds his skill constantly in demand by criminal gangs. He's always reluctant to fight, and resorts to violence only with great reluctance and as a last resort. He prefers to make his living by practising his skills as a masseur and supplementing that income by conning greedy crooks who underestimate his gambling abilities.
In this first episode of a series that covered two decades, Ichi is hired by a gang leader to defeat a consumptive samurai who's been imported by a rival gang. The two swordsmen meet while fishing and become friends, but destiny has decreed they must fight each other, and only one will survive… |

While not as exciting as some of the other action packed entries (Chest of Gold, Zatoichi's Revenge) in terms of character development this film had the most impact on me. The stakes just seem to be higher in this entry than in most. Make no mistake, Ichi's life is on the line in EVERY other installment, but this centers on how Ichi really wants to quit his swordsman lifestyle and take a wife. To live the rest of his days in peace is all he wants and that is taken away from him. Ichi is forced to not only see how terrible the people he trusts can be, but how much he brings upon himself. This film really drives home how much Ichi loses each time he takes a life. A new friend, a new aquaintence or a new lover is almost always instantly taken away from him, either by an enemies hands or by his own. But the single greatest scene in this film is not any of the sword fights, like in other entries, the best scene is the evens/odds scene in this film. If you're a fan of this series at all please see this entry. |

This entry is somewhat slower-paced and less action-packed than would become the norm in later Zatoichi films (which would continue to be produced through 1973). There is only one major swordfight, near the very end, but at least it's a spectacular one, with Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) slashing opponents right, left, front and back, although the spurting bloodshed which would soon become a distinct feature of samurai films is noticeably absent here. Zatoichi himself is also considerably less superhuman than he appears in later films.
Instead, the emphasis is Zatoichi's role as mediator in a conflict between gang bosses in a town he is visiting solely to pay respects to the mother of a gang member he'd killed who'd been seeking the ten gold coin bounty on Zatoichi's head. The complex interrelationships among the characters center chiefly around two young women, one of them a former lover of Zatoichi's who is now the wife of a sword-for-hire seeking to sell his services to one of the wily bosses. Zatoichi sides with the underdog, Sakichi, who'd reluctantly inherited his father's territory but would rather marry the other young woman, Onobu (Miwa Takada), the pretty young daughter of the innkeeper, a once-powerful gang boss bearing a powerful grudge because he'd lost his territory to Sakichi's father. The gang bosses pressure the vulnerable Sakichi to use Zatoichi's trust to set a trap for him. The stage is then set for a series of confrontations that culminate in the final battle.
It may be slow going for most action and swordplay buffs, but it has a formal beauty that later films in the series dispensed with in favor of more visceral thrills. The polished camerawork, largely on location, gives us stately compositions focused on the characters and their relationships. A sparing score by venerated composer Akira Ifukube adds a touch of class. Samurai films of the time routinely boasted such visual and aural elegance long before the audience demanded more bloodshed and a more excessive approach in later films (see, especially, the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series). |

Zatoichi finds a dying man on the road. The man asks Zatoichi to save his daughter and to take her to Edo. The young woman is a princess of a very wealthy family, and she is worth a lot of money to the Yakuza Gangs who can sell her to the family for a large ransom of gold coins.
So Zatoichi is thrust into a battle against several Yakuza gangs who want to kidnap the princess. Meanwhile, an unethical Yakuza gang lord is claiming that Zatoichi has been paid to fight for his Yakuza gang against a rival gang over gambling territory. This brings a price on Zatoichi's head from the rival gang's leader. Various samurai from various gangs are attacking Zatoichi for one reason or another...
Can he save the girl and fulfill his promise to a dying man? Can he save his honor and do what he thinks is right? Can he save his life? Will he mete out Justice to the corrupt Yakuza? I have probably missed a few more little sub-plots. This film is action-packed, and it is also very thoughtful and full of the split-second Zen of life and death decisions. Zatoichi is not just a person full of virtues. He is also hardened due to bitter experiences, and he is not above taking some payback. |

Unlike a typical action movie, a Zatoichi movie usually has several significant sub-plots that all manage to intertwine and advance the main story. The Chest of Gold is perhaps one of the most complicated of the Zatoichi movies that I have seen. Zatoichi really bites off a lot in this movie, especially considering that it is much less than two hours long.
Like many Japanese films, Murphy's Law plays a major role. Most of the schemes never work out the way they were planned, and sometimes the unexpected turns are the heart of the story! In this film, Zatoichi is visiting the grave of a young man that he killed by accident. Zatoichi is very remorseful and wishes to pay for a headstone for the youth. While there, Zatoichi comes across the robbery of the local Intendant's Tax Man, who is carrying 1000 Ryo (gold coins). Some students of Chuchi, a former teacher of Zatoichi also try to rob the Chest full of Gold. In the confusion of the swordplay, the gold disappears, and Zatoichi is blamed for the theft along with his teacher, Chuchi.
Because the Tax Money was stolen, the Villagers must pay the large sum again. Zatoichi tries to explain that he did not steal the money and that he wants to help them. The Villagers curse him and beat him unmercifully, drawing blood. Zatoichi could have fought back and killed many thanks to his swordsmanship, but he takes the beating instead of killing unarmed peasants. There his quest begins to find the money and the real thieves...
This film builds up towards a brutal conclusion unlike any previously seen in a Zatoichi film. There is blood and gore, and it is not just the bad guys who are bleeding. Unlike some scenes were the fight between the two masters is a matter of one move, here the action is furious. Every trick is used to kill Zatoichi. The final scenes are tragic, bloody, and ironic. Amid the carnage of human bodies, blood, and death, the villagers celebrate their good fortune and walk away. No one wonders if Zatoichi is still alive, or if he is wounded and needs help. |

Of course, the movie is filled with the expected Zatoichi humor and action goodness, so it's definitely a worthy entry into the fine series. Following what was started in number 6 (The Chest of Gold), Flashing Sword continues to add some blood to the sword wounds, especially at the end. One shot has the red stuff spray hard all over one of the paper doors! Speaking of that, there was also an angled, side-scrolling action sequence with Zatoichi working his way down an alley that reminded me of the hall fight in Oldboy. Cool stuff! |

This rampant corruption makes it impossible for Zatoichi to trust anyone fully. To fix the problem, Zatoichi seems to have to fight an entire army. When the movie ends, you wonder if there are any able bodied men left alive in the village or if Zatoichi has killed them all.
If you are looking for a typical light Zatoichi movie, you will not like this one. If you are looking for a dark, powerful, thought provoking movie, this is the one. |

Zatoichi and the Chess Master heralds the start of a three film run of some of the best the series has to offer. Katsu Shintaro is now fully adept in his role as Zatoichi and director Misumi Kenji does an excellent job with the material. The story is full of surprises and little twists and turns. Some people compare Zatoichi to Columbo, and it's easy to see why here. |

If this had been done earlier in the Zatoichi series it could have been one of the best. It is good enough, as most of them are, but the plot and the characters seem too complicated for the series at this point. The situation is unusually intriguing: the farmers in the province have two champions, a benevolent boss (for once) and a philosopher-samurai who starts a sort of Grange; both run afoul of the usual local gangsters, who want the crops to fail because it increases their gambling revenues and their chances to snap up some land; their chief or powerful ally is a seeming puritan who is death on drinking and gambling but secretly indulges his own perverse appetites. These characters have enough meaning so that they deserved to be set against Zatoichi as he was drawn originally, but by now he has lost many of his nuances, and the changes in some of the characters, such as the good boss and the angry sister of a man Zatoichi has killed, need more time then the movie has to give, so that the story seems choppy, as if some scenes were missing. Other than that, the movie shows the virtues of most of the others in the series: good acting, sometimes lyrical photography, the creation of a vivid, believable, and uniquely recognizable landscape (the absence of which is obvious in the occasional episode where the director just misses it), and a technical quality that of its nature disguises itself: the imaginatively varied use of limited sets so their limitations seem not to exist. And of course there is the keynote actor, whose presence, as much as his performance, makes it all work. |

Unlike some of the weaker entries in this series, this movie has a lot of story and dialogue and the supporting characters are given more screen time. The best Zatoichi movies have had fully developed supporting characters and villains. Unlike the very annoying Zatoichi movie where he cares for the crying baby(Fight, Zatoichi, Fight), in this film the little boy's antics are kept to a minimum, and that is great.
Joshiro Konoe plays the role of a Samurai who is working for the national government in order to find and kill corrupt government officials who are working with the Yakuza. Konoe looks a lot like Toshiro Mifune, and Konoe is an excellent actor. Konoe carries himself with dignity and power that one associates with ancient Samurai. He looks and talks the part.
Aside from Zatoichi's various interactions with the corrupt villains and with the noble common people, not much fighting happens in this movie. It has a lot of story, and I enjoyed it. The swordplay was not missed at all. Of course, once Zatoichi and the Samurai (Konoe) separately uncover the villains, there is some excellent sword-fighting demonstrated.
The climactic final scene is one of the best Samurai sword fight scenes that I have ever seen. The fight is long enough that the director captured the increasing exhaustion on the face of Zatoichi and his opponent. |

Eventually he must confront not only the leaders of the town but the outlaw gang in battle.
From the opening credits and the blaring song that starts the movie, it was obvious to me that the Zatoichi franchise was making an attempt to make a spaghetti Samurai movie. In earlier Zatoichi films, the villains were bad, but they were usually cowardly buffoons hiding behind hundreds of henchmen and the occasionally hired gun. In this movie, the fugitives are particularly loathsome: dirty with no respect for anyone. The violence is more brutal and even Zatoichi gets one of his worst beatings in a long time.
Unlike the Italian westerns, the violence happens mostly at the end; Zatoichi tries to warn off the fugitives, but even he mutters that these people are trouble. I think his Italian counterpart would have wiped them out as soon as he met them. The typical Zatoichi touches are still there, the twist at the end (which is so obvious, I think even the filmmakers weren't too concerned with making it hard to guess) and the large bodycount at the end, for example. I give the filmmakers credit for trying to stay up with the times and the film is enjoyable but I also feel that some of the Italian "gimmicks" weren't needed (most notably the jarring music) |

Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) is the blind swordsman who goes back to a village that he remembers as peaceful and tranquil. It has been two to three years since his last visit and he longs to get away from the constant attacks that plague him on a daily basis, as he has a price on his head. But all is not as he remembers. When he arrives to his beloved village, he finds it is torn between a father and son that have their own gangs involved in their own family feud. As a result, the village is torn between the two men as the son seeks his father's gold (which may or may not exist).
As the blind masseur becomes involved in the midst of this feud, the son's hired bodyguard (Toshiro Mifune) is introduced. Mifune ever-so-slightly reprises his role from the Akira Kurosawa films, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. It's not the exact same character, but only the most devout film buffs would see the subtle differences. As the Yojimbo discovers just who Zatoichi is and the price on his head, the two banter back and forth with threats and insults and even a few sword fights as the plot thickens.
The film keeps you guessing until the very end as to whether or not these two samurai masters will end up friends or foes. All the while, Shintaro Katsu and Toshiro Mifune give master performances in their roles as usual. What Toshiro Mifune brings to this long running series of films is a stark contrast to Shintaro Katsu's simple and quiet Zatoichi. Toshiro Mifne's Yojimbo is harsh, loud, and aggressive when comparing the two. Putting these two great actors together, while playing off one another, results in a well balanced and enjoyable opposition. We all know who the heroes are, but what happens between these two? Do they find resolution or does it all end in a bitter and bloody sword battle? The only way to find out is to watch. |

This entry in the Zatoichi series is firmly planted in the 1970s and at times has an almost James Bondesque feel to it. This is especially true in the bath house scene where Zatoichi goes to enjoy a calming bath and ends up attacked by scores of tattooed, naked yakuza. The music is great and the scene is frenetic and fun at the same time. For veteran Zatoichi fans, notice how Zatoichi's style differs when he uses someone else's sword.
Tatsuya Nakadai has a role in this film. He plays a truly deranged and dangerous ronin.
The colors are brilliant, there's a good musical score and it's a fine blend of humor, drama, and action. This is an entry with wide appeal for chambara fans. It's campy at times, so those who love the early Zatoichi films most might feel that this film is a bit frivolous, but for the casual viewer there is much to enjoy. |

Ichi's tender-hearted nature is in full display as he suckles a newborn and refuses to duel the orphan's father knowing what the inevitable conclusion would be. Also, the preview of comedy acts that are performed for the magistrate to qualify for entry into the festival are hilarious, most notably the monkey routine.
Zatoichi comes upon a town that is about to have a festival. When a gang moves in to collect their due from the performers (and force the baby's aunt into prostitution), Ichi springs into action to set things straight. The scene with Zatoichi slowly approaching the leader while on fire is just great. If you're a fan of Chambara Cinema, this one's definitely worth checking out. |

Upset, Zatoichi sets off to a nearby town to look for the woman's daughter Nishikigi to break the news to her. He eventually finds her working as a geisha and learns she only needs to pay a debt of fifty ryo to buy her freedom. Zatoichi becomes obsessed with raising the money and in doing so ignores the hardships experienced by the local fisherman caused by the local evil boss Mangoro. But when Mangoro kidnaps Nishikigi everything comes to a head in a brutal climax, and Zatoichi must save her and his own life.
Zatoichi in Desperation is the most somber and darkest Zatoichi film that I have seen in the series, both in terms of photography and plot. It's interesting that Shintaro Katsu, who plays Zatoichi, was the director. He was certainly going for a different look and style and got it. Most of the scenes are darkly lit and there is a claustrophobic feeling to the shots. The bad guys, composed of the local yakuza (gangster) mob, are meaner than usual and the body count of innocent villagers is far higher than usual. Zatoichi himself also suffers more at the hands of the evil doers than usual. This was the next to last entry (#24) in the series before the 17 year hiatus between #25 and 26. Things get back into the more typical Zatoichi style in #25. This film would have been appropriate as the last in the series. It has the feeling of "an ending". A very interesting entry, but not one of my favorites. |

The bad guy is an official who also grew up in the same village and was a childhood friend of Zatoichi. He appears to be befriending the village by paying off their tax debt, but lays claim to the village quarry, which serves as the only source of income besides farming. A high point of this film is the appearance of Takashi Shimura, the hero of many Kurosawa films including Seven Samurai, as the guardian of Zatoichi's new-found sister. The ending is a little bit of a copout as Zatoichi struggles to decide whether he can bring himself to kill his old friend. A solid entertaining entry to the series. |

The image of Zatoichi holding a severed head while slashing attackers is one I may use for my next tattoo. Blood spurts and flows in rivers. The story is well executed, nostalgic, and has the welcomed addition of nudity! It was hard to believe that Zatoichi actually had sex with a gorgeous tattoed naked yakuza girl in a hot spring. It was even more incredible that at age 69 Shintarô Katsu pulled the scene off, and it was quite erotic! That has to be one for the cinematic record books.
The only thing I found that didn't work in this film was a very 80's Michael Bolton like theme song sung in English! Luckily it only occurs with the vocals twice. Other than that minor flaw, this is in the top 5 of the Zatoichi catalog, and I've seen them all. Highly Recommended!!! |

Hello, could somebody please re-share [25].Zatoichi.at.the.Blood.Fest?
I have had it in my queue for 41 days now and have managed to download 18 out of 26 movies since then, the remaining films all have a few sources (though I only seem to make a few megs progress each day on them) but there hasnt been a full source on Zatoichi at the blood fest for 22 days (!), and have seen several people from here in the same boat as me, all sources are missing a bit from the "front" of the file. Seeing as samikula clearly said they wouldnt be able to keep these shared for long, I cant believe anyone would leech then do a runner...If anyone could help I along with the other 11 people still holding out for this would really appreciate it!
