Hi,
My boy bought a pre-modded xbox of his mate.

The chip seems to work ok but it doesn't recognize any avi discs i put in.

I tried jynks solution that i found using the search (using stomp) but that doesn't work either.

I boot the box with the chip active, reboot to dash and it says the dvd drive is empty.

Can anyone help?, go easy on me i'm a complete n00b when it comes to the xbox.

you've got XBMC installed right? That's the dash for playing media.
If your just on the m$ dash, its not going to wtf an avi is.

You need to go into XBMC/XBMP, and then you'll be able to play avis.

If i go to msdash.xbe and put a dvdr with avis on, it says disc not recognised because its not an xbox game.

Install a new dash, or go into XBMC.

You'll know if you're in XBMC, it looks like this:

If you go to 'My Videos' then you'll get options for the DVD Drive, Network etc.

Then just browse to the file on the disc and select the one you want to play.

Ah, here I can't help. I burn all my AVI's to DVD-R and they work flawlessly. If the drive is reading the disc, you should get a file list to the right of the menu you describe.

Strangely enough i put a dvd-r with 5 films on. When i click on my videos i dont get any film list come up but if i eject the disc it will autoplay the first film and play that again when its finished without moving onto the 2nd film.

If i browse my files and select the dvd drive i can see the films listed but cant select any without it wanting me to move them.

That's the menu on the left, what's in the main menu (the middle of the screen)?

There is no main menu. It says Title in the top right hand corner and 0 objects down the bottom.

If i browse my files i can see all the drives and the dvd drive, but it doesn't show a disc in it.

I've come to the conclusion that the drive doesn't recognise cdr media. A dvd with 5 films on will act like i said above.

However if i go into XBMP i can browse all the films and select whatever one i want, this is strange as i thought XBMP was superceded by XBMC, so i'm confused :?

I had a very similar problem to this, and it was when I installed a new build of XBMC. Either that release was borked, or something went wrong with the install as I was getting similar problems.

A fresh install of a new release sorted the problems out (with guidance from PC_A  )

Well the build of XBMP is 2.4 i think

XBMC is build 1.0.0

XBMP is obsolete i think, not being updated

There's a newer version of XBMC out, but i don't think it'll make any difference if the drive doesn't recognise the cdr discs.

xbmp is WAY out of date

XBMC is almost at v2.0

Your drive will read the disks, XBMP dies therefore XBMC will (when you fix your borked install) ;)

Ah that makes more sense :)

So i guess even if i do another install it still wont read the cdr discs?

If so i dont suppose it matters at the mo, as long as XBMP does it.
