yeah, there's still time for sony to say the ps3 is region locked too

I wonder about the pricing, as soon as ps3 comes out, you think they'll cut the price to £130-150? If nintendo are making a profit from hardware as they claim, and quite frankly i don't trust them, then they've already "won" the console war with a f*ckin gamecube!!!

Play stats recorded
http://gamepolitics.com/2006/09/30/nint ... l-feature/
Quote:
In 2005 the ESA announced that each of the three next-gen consoles would include ESRB rating-based parental controls. Nintendo, however, seems keen on taking the monitoring concept further.

According to the latest in a series of interviews with the Wii development team, the new system will have a “Play History” feature which tracks how long gamers play as well as what they are playing.

“Rather than the console turning itself off automatically to ensure it is not played for more than an hour a day, it seemed much better to allow parents to use the Play History to discuss with their children how much they are using the console,” explained Tomoaki Kuroume, who oversees software user interfaces. “The decision to make it impossible to delete this data was a separate subject for debate.”

“Even if a kid wakes up in the middle of the night and sneaks down to play games, that will show up on the Play History!” added Takashi Aoyama, manager of the development group behind Wii’s operating system.

“Ultimately, the Play History fulfills the function of telling parents how long their kids have been playing, as well as being an interesting talking point,” continued Kuroume. “It’s just really fun for users to be able to see the record of how long they played. That’s why we decided to make the Play History impossible to reset. You can imagine users saying: ‘I didn’t realize I’d been playing that game so much…’”

AE: I really like this idea because as appealing as parental control is, parental involvement is better. Sure, simply rendering a console unable to play nastier games is a welcome feature, but it still allows them to remain disconnected and oblivious to what their children are actually doing. Little Timmy may not be able to play Blood Soaked Chainsaw Succubi From Hell anymore but you also don’t want him playing eight straight hours of Super Mario Galaxy either, when he should be doing his homework.

I guess that won't mean much for us, i saw this article title at gamepolitics and thought it was spyware, but reading around i think it just records stats of every game played and for how long. Maybe this will effect things for you PCA if you get one eventually, everyone will be able to see how long you play on Barbie Princess 4 for

There's an interview of the "family functions" this info seems to be derived from:

 Yeah, that's a nightmare on the xbox360 too, it means I can't post over at the M$ xbox forums, as it records EVERY game you play and attatches it to your post (avatar) in my case it's like having a flashing neon "I'm a Pirate" sign

So....£179.99 for gamecube, with a gimmicky controller, it's amazing how nintendo have managed to kill off all the enthusiasm I had for the Wii.

No WAY on earth am I even considering one now.

Market research firm IDG recently published a huge report detailing their predictions for the next-gen console wars, as well as PC games and the handhelds, through 2010. But however long-reaching the data may be, it isn't far-reaching, as it only covers North America and Western Europe. Unsurprising -- they list the Wii as the big loser. Yeah, yeah, we've heard it all before, but we fully expect to convert our North American brothers. What is more suprising is that the 360 is just barely coming out on top here, with the PS3 poised to take the lead soon after. Of course, after 2010, we'll all be driving rocket cars for our robot masters, so will the console wars really matter?

They had a Wii on The Gadget Show last night. Apparently they had to get the chairman of Nintendo UK (or someone like that) to give them permission to use it. I've never seen one being used in the flesh (so to speak) and it looked amazing. Shame they couldn't have spent more time with it though.

Only a few reviews in, i guess they are taking their time to get it played. Seems there's ~70hrs of gameplay without repitition. Gamespot actually named my favuorite game ever (link to the past) as the best zelda game, and then stated it was better than LttP. Can't wait! Actually 70hrs too, not like most games where there's maybe about 8 before repeating yourself.

I was kinda pissed they delayed it a year but it seems they were just bulking it up so it would last.

Also it seems the wii version is supposed to be the best one, according to the reviews, its not like the GCN version is bad (its still better than anything), its just not as good comparatively.

arrghh... looks like i might buy one of these things. I'll try not to, but i bet i'll be walking past a shop, see it in the window, black out and then wake up at home with a wii in my hand :googley: :wacky:

ps. looking at the estimates above, that graph is already foobar, there's much, much less ps3s at the start.

I was right about Red Steel - While not an outright stinker , it's controlls are at odds with the gameplay :P

To be fair you also said everything under the sun about it too, like it being an "on-the-rails" light gun game, iirc

To be honest, i had zero interest in that game, or many of ubisofts games come to think of it... definitely none on the wii.

Kotaku has received a couple of emails from Wii owners reporting of already receiving DRE (disc-read error) messages. Some have even reported that their Wii has become bricked and won't even power on! What horror! Have any of you out there in Wii Fanboy land been the unfortunate recipient of a painful message declaring that your Wii will not read your discs or even turn on anymore?

DRE? Seems familiar.. wonder if it involved a certain bios and a pirate gcn game?

There's been a few articles about the inevitable broken consoles. Once guy's disc loader broke, but nintendo replaced it, another from the second picture is a similar story.

Seems ps3 is having a hard time too, so that makes all three of them with launch power/software/hardware problems!

Parallel to the long-awaited launch of the Wii, designer David Stubbs, Aaron Worrall and John Eysman have launched their website, called Wiicade. The first homebrew application we have seen so far for Wii, Wiicade offers gamers a chance to play and possibly create Flash games to be played through the Opera browser.

We poked around the site to discover it an instant success. Since the site launch on Sunday, over 16,000 games were played in under 24 hours. Wiicade costs nothing to you and we hope to see more games inspired by the Wiimote appear. If you, like several other disspointed Nintendo fanboys and girls, didn't get your hands on a Wii, you can still enjoy these games on your PC to hold

Here's a look at the insides of the console:

Funny you should bring that up. Out of the box no, obviously, its been out for a mere couple of days (it came out in us first, not even out in uk till december). That said it looks promising.

Wii is being probed via its net connection (netcode is the number one way of exploiting consoles these days :) )
http://slashdot.org/articles/06/11/23/1339216.shtml

It doesn't have the processing power to do hdtv, well not that i know of. If they convert coreav it might.
http://slashdot.org/articles/06/11/23/1339216.shtml

For anyone who has one and doesn't have a component cable, make one:

@antropomorphic, sega are dead as a hardware company. They make shitty games and have no handheld market to fall back on.

Best thing to their name is total war, and they bought that!

I for one always liked sega hardware
they made shit, but also some interesting stuff

if it hadn't been for the dreamcast, online consolegaming would prolly have surfaced a decade later

personally i think segas machines have always been the worst every round.

NES > Master System 1/2
SNES > MegaDrive / 32x / etc.
GB > GameGear
PSX / Everything > Saturn
Everything > Dreamcast

Their pads were always crap, but it was mostly their games. Its like take the quality of segas games as of late and compare them directly to nintendos and you see why nintendo is still a player.

Nintendo's hardware isn't always great, but their games are usually of a very high standard :)

As for the online stuff, i don't think you can make that claim. Microsoft was also the guys who made consoling online a real option. PC Gaming has had online since doom. :) Online didn't really come to consoles on any significant level until Xbox Live imo, that's when you notice people play it.

To be honest, i don't evne think online playing is even that big a deal on the consoles

I remember how lame it was killing you shit bastards from the "proper" Quake 3 on the pc.

To be fair though, you could play the snes on the net before the dreamcast was ever conceived ;)

There was a sega "meganet" too for the megadrive, they just recycled it for the dreamcast.

They only planned it but never released it.
Nintendo actually released there's... only in japan though! You might be able to one on ebay :)

I know someone who had a floppy disk drive and a modem for his snes. :o I'm pretty sure the amiga beat nintendo too ;)

There's a Edge special magazine out that's quite a good buy if your into vintage gaming. Its got a lot of really cool old stuff, from the first issues of their magazine. Ranges to the funny to the "its a shame it fell through" :( There's the original n64 developer screenshots when they announced they were going to "skip" 32bit, which is just a pc
