A cinematic journey through the thickets of human memory and ambiguities of verbal self-expression from Christopher Doyle, Wong Kar Wai's regular cameraman and an individual of many remarkable personal traits. A young Japanese man haunted by the memories of his childhood (Tadanobu Asano) arrives in Hong Kong and lands (by an accident) in a gay bar populated with all sorts of colorful characters. His ensuing unlikely friendship with the amnesiac beer-drinking bar owner and a charming young girl helping out at the bar (Mavis Xu), interlayed with extensive recollections from his past constitute the non-linear fabric of the film. There is not too much of "storyline", if that concerns you, but the poetic scripting, inspired soundtrack and (do I really need to say this?) images unlike what you've seen before will certainly make for a memorable experience, provided that you invest just a little bit attention.

The video files I am releasing here is a rip from the Japanese DVD. I've also added a large collection of fairly ideosynchratic extras. I have tried to tone down the overall bluish cast present in the image on the DVD. The dialogue is in Japanese/English/Cantonese and there are English and Chinese subtitles available. The English subtitles are assembled from a few (rather low quality) sources, and I would appreciate if someone who actually understands Japanese could edit them. Of course, the large amount of wordplay does not make translation an easy task.

Alternative titles are Kujaku (Japanese) and San tiao ren (Mandarin). As always, any constructive comments are appreciated. Please enjoy!
