David Cronenberg 0(-)
George Romero 36 (+)
It's almost a tie but I'm sticking with Romero.

Mmm, can't really vote here. Saw none of them, although I have the 1953 version on DVD.

that one is the second worst, i haven't seen it in ages but it kind of made me sick... the tripods don't even have legs, wtf is up with that? and that religious bollocks? why don't they just pin Wells down and stamp on his ballls?
not as many votes as i was expecting here, so a screeny from each:
1953:
2005:
2005 (the crappier one):
2006:
1978:
<img src="http://www.waroftheworldsmusic.com/extras/jeffwayneA1152x864.jpg" width="600">
Probably should have put Orson Welles's version in there two but since its radio only, i guess it can be a justified exclusion on some level.
There were also a couple of series too but they sucked balls

Spielberg's version was surprisingly faithful and as a result it was a thrilling adaptation. The various artist renderings of the tripods in Jeff Wayne's musical version always scared the shit out of me as a young teenager, with those menacing green eyes. The unfaithful '53 version totally sucked in my opinion. It was way too Americanised for my taste. They had to get a nuke in there and right in their own backyard, makes perfect sense in a way.

Well faithfulish... apart from the kids, and the dead beat dad thing, etc.
And tim robbins wasn't a priest and the whole religious hypocracy was completely ommited, etc.
But the same events kind of happen, Tim Robbins is an hybrid of the preist and the soldier. The boat trip is there. The concept of getting from point a to point b to meet the woman. There were a few neat touches too, of course, and the whole fertiliser scenes were great. I do think a lot of what speilberg chose to omit made it a worse film though. And hiring Tom Cruise was a bad move
I know what you mean though, there's the same basic plot points if its now missing nearly all of the bits of meaning from the novel. I do think a point it did better on is the franticness and total overwhelming nature of the attack, its not really paced that well from what i remember of the novel (its been a long time since i read it when i was ickle )
I agree with you on the 53 version, it was crude and poorly done. Its a film of significance on the scifi landscape, but in all honesty it neither deserves it or should have it. I'd choose speilbergs out of those two, somewhat shallow but better looking WotW any day.

In all fairness, that uk version is probably the worst movie of 2005 i can recall, its so terrible, and not in a funny way, its just tedious!
