I just lost my drive with my porn on! Nooooooooooooooooooooooo....

That will teach me to defrag a hdd with O&O, that application has been nothing but trouble. Oh well, it was my old, old download area before i move them onto another partition. I lost a couple of DS roms, which i seem to have downloaded by news again anyway, a couple of stephen chow movies (now that does suck!).

I can't think what else is gone though, I probably had some games, and a couple of archives in there.

Seems the reason it went was stress from being defragged by O&O which I'm going to uninstall now () since defragging seems pointless, and the heat. It was exceptionally hot.

I've talked about the likelihoods of disk failures before and this has just re-enforced my experience that its under heavy usage, under high temperatures that hdds fail. It had been accessed regularly for a long time, but it was a heavy disk scan on it that did it in.

Maxtor Diamondmax 9 200GB:
6Y200M006531A

Damn, lost my pr0n... well some of it :wacky:

Its not the fault of O&O, been using it years, its that diamondmax plus 9 200gig drive. Theyve proven to be really crap, I've lost 2, my best mate lost 1, a friend in canada was losing 1 a month (3 in total). The plus 10 is a far better drive, but I personally trust seagate now with their 5 yr warranty & shockproof so the kids cant shock damage anymore drives unlike what happened with a WD & IBM that were both brand new when it happened.

seagate and maxtor are the same company now

I still think O&O has the careful nature of a sledge hammer in these matters, I'm sure its the application that has trashed a lot of disks, i've removed the software. Defragmenting gain for me has been small so to hell with it, there's no point running it anymore. Whilst the drive was naff i'm sure, O&O was what crushed it and for little reason i think, especially since that drive was a standing storage space.

My storage volumes are all EXT3, and for windows i use this driver:
http://www.fs-driver.org/
or you can use:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd

Don't need to defrag them on that FS

Seagate bought maxtor reasonably recently, but when I bought these they were 2 diffrent companies. I've lost 1 of a pair of maxtor sata 80gig due to heat, was running a raid stripe array & sandwiched 3 together in the bank & the one in the middle burnt out its bearings. That was when I replaced the case with this aluminium one which also has 2 big fans on the front of the case blowing air across them. another option to keep the drives cool is those bolt on hard drive fans or the quietest option (& most risky in my opinion), watercooling :o

ai, when i was testing the warranty (its run out :outsider: ) it was redirecting me to seagates website and keeps telling me to run segates tools on the maxtor hdd

I think my next main pc is going to be watercooled.

I've used seatools to set up a brand new maxtor drive, but maxblast wont set up a seagate, wierd. I was tempted to watercool the other one instead of another ally case, but kept reading about parts of the motherboard needing air to pass over them or theyd blow up. (ASUS boards)

Thats nothing, lost 1.5 TB of data in januari.
Anything but porn. Including lots of unreleased rips of mine. :matrix:

After getting most of the lost data back (redownloading them) I lost that raid array again in february....

Yep that was a bad start of this year.

Glad it's stable at this moment. *knocks*on*wood*

But to make up for your lost porn collection: :moon:
Hope you feel a bit better now.

What app is O&O btw? I use Diskeeper Pro for defragging under windows (no point in linux afaik) and it's an ok win32 defrag app.

No, bad luck...
The disks were from a batch of 20 disks. so I got lucky with 3 bad ones, which also happened to be in the same raid 6 array.
