NEC ND-1300A i presume? I've got one myself and is very pleased with it..

Something you should know though, this drive will only burn on media in it's database, so you probably want to update the firmware once in a while for it to support more (cheap) discs..

v1.08 is available here

Me TOO got this one

I say we now make this a dvd-r club ; "prayer not allowed "

no seriously , I got it 4 weeks now and still haven't got around burning a single DVD

I needed a dvd reader in the first place to rip stuff, but seeing how dirt cheap this nec was AND -/+, I figured what the hell.......

So are we now gonna release things on dvd-r format ? Most horror movies are dvd-5 content ESPECIALLY the cheap/cheesy shit..

I'll RELEASE in dvd-5 if wanted, but I'm not going to waste bandwidth downloading 'em, I can (and do) fit 6/7 movies on a dvd-+r ATM, I can't see a convincing reason to switch to dvd-5, If I want THAT quality, i'll buy the movie :)

Spud's already done a thread asking if a dvdr section is wanted. I think we should stick to avi. The problems we have getting 700MB files spread with all the releases, can you imagine if we started getting 2,3,4 etc dvdr releases

PLus only a small percent of us have dvdr  and we'd have to do an avi rip to. But if a dvdr section was about I'd download and probably release a dvdr to see how it goes

And from the looks of it NEC 1300A Rules on this board

@ PC_Arcade - I've got herries firmware
Thought that was what death was on about ???
I meant I'm gonna have to check if theres been an update to herries!

It rules. had major troubles with unbranded media with NEC's firmware but herries burns ANYTHING !!!

Do you guys just burn the avi's to dvdr?

I know PCA & I have xbox's so any format on a dvdr can be played. But was wondering if anybody converts to say SVCD and makes menus etc. And whats the best prog?

Ulead Movie Factory?? DxaKrator

 I would have though that if you authored the DVD as an SVCD or VCD in Nero you can drop the mpegs in order onto the compilation and just use the back and forward chapter buttons to navigate through each movie.

But converting to SVCD, how lossy is that? Do you get roughly the same quality.

I'm only really an expert in dvd ripping. I have no idea about conversions and all the different formats. Think I'll give it a go at converting say the friday 13ths/halloweens to svcd creating a menu in one of the many dvd authoring progs and see how it looks.

Like some-one psoted above would be cool to have a horror dvd with all the films in a collection one one disc, with a menu etc

Converting to SVCD isn't too bad quality wise, I used to do it for my mum all the time. The other thing to remember is that it's on TV so the quality drop (which is minimal) is hardly noticeable :) But I'm not too clever with mpeg (and variants) DJ Benz is the person to ask.

ermm, beginnig already?
ok.
piss off.

all i want - answers from DVD-gurus
ffs
nope?
ok, i found info on hardware forums.

1. NEC 1300A - good, BUT many users expirience problems WITH rewriting CD-RW and DVD-RW.
and the main - good chance that DVD-R/RW will be unreadable on another DVD-ROM's

2. i am gonna take Teak DV-W540D i think.
in all tests - one of the best.
one '-' CD-R max burning speed only 16. but i dont care i have Teac W540E.

viel spass nit Nec 1300A.. und gluck.

1. The NEC 1300A is fine, I have burnt and re-burnt many DVD-RW and CDRW and have tried on around 5 other dvd roms and players with no problems whatsoever, I think negative opinions of the 1300A may come from people still using the first version of the firmware.

2. Good luck, hope that works out for you

Prayer, if you want answers to questions, how are people supposed to tell that when all you post is the word "lamers" into the middle of a discussion?

Yeah PrayeR.

With herries firmware upgrade i've had no problems burning to dvdr/cdr at all. And alot of people seem to have the NEC 1300A.

But that teak drive looks pretty solid too. So go for the cheaper one if money is a factor

On a seperate topic :

Although the first spindle of dvdr's i bought some worked some didn't, i couldn't understand. Burner just spat it out saying cannot write first track. then shove another disc in and it would work, bizzarre!

It was only on downloading dvd-info. Which will tell you the exact format and hex code of your blank dvd-r that I found the spindle was a mixture of dvd-r and dvd-RAM

Last time i buy from a computer fair

Discs were identical, but every disc dvd-info told me was dvd-RAM wouldn't burn in my drive

Might of been a manufacturing mistake. But i bought the spindle as dvd-r , and not as a mixture of dvdr's

Yeah I'd get one too, I only bought mine to *backup* some Xbox games, but I use it for pretty much everything now, it's nice to free up 4Gb+ every time you burn ;)

So what's the best firmware upgrade for the NEC ? ( if that 1.08 is faulty ?!?)
What that red herring paul is talking about ?

Looking back it seems quite wise of me not FLASH it the very same day I bought......like I said above , I wasn't in a hurry anyway.....

Herrie has released some hacked firmware with different / more writing strategies for cheaper brands of DVD-R and has also remove the 2x ripping limit built in to the NEC firmware the firmware is available from http://herrie.rpc1.org.
I'd also like to point out that the ripping speeds from the NEC1300A are quite amazing compared to my old 16x LG DVD rom, it leaves the LG standing :)
