A small-town loner's fascination with the new kid in town leads him into something much more sinister than he could ever have imagined.

Quote:
"The moment I read the short story the very first time, it was like being hit by a bus," Carter Smith said, waiting in a Dallas airport for a changeover flight to Salt Lake City. "I was like, 'This is the film that I can make better than anybody else. This is the film I have to make.' It just sort of clobbered me over the head."

Indeed, Smith made Bugcrush, an adaptation of Scott Treleaven's story about the "sinister" fallout from a relationship between two high-school boys. An in-demand fashion photographer by day, Smith had directed only a few commercials and small TV projects before diving into his 35-minute film debut last May.

Sundance, however, was not among Smith's immediate goals for the short. "Really, I wasn't thinking about anything other than getting it made," he told me. "As we were sort of going along in the finishing process--editing through the summer--it sort of presented itself and it became prtety obvious that the Sundance deadline would be tight--a complete stretch to get it done by then, but it almost fit with our timetable."

Smith cut post-production so close that he was still burning Bugcrush's rough cut to DVD 30 mintues before Federal Express's last New York pick-up to make the festival's submission deadline. He had, however, color timed and sound mixed what he sent--a work-in-progress impressive enough for Sundance shorts programmer Roberta Munroe to eventually send an e-mail asking Smith how it was coming along.

"I was sort of ecstatic that someone had even watched it," Smith said of Munroe's note. He called her back to assure her that Bugcrush was still on track and would not be too much shorter or longer than the relatively epic short she and fellow programmer Mike Plante had just watched. "You know," Smith continued, "The rough cut might be great, but all the doubt and indecision that can happen in the finishing stages can get the better of you, and you can completely fuck it up in the time between the rough cut and the final cut."

In the end, Smith not only did not fuck it up, but he was invited to participate in the Screenwriters Lab leading up to Sundance. The ebullient filmmaker said the 2006 event is his first "full-on festival experience anywhere ever."

"I'm a total newbie," he said. "I've been here or there to a screening, but I've never actually gone to a destination for a film festival to be there the whole time. This is definitely a first, and I guess don't really know what to expect. I've been picking the brains of everyone I can."

Nice little short, well worth the download thanks to Gonzo@KG.

Should be from a DVD but sound was sometime glitchy on my machine - nothing serious, and my be some codec mismatch, but to be on the safe side I'm posting to LQ. And then, I know the true HHAHers dwell mainly here on LQ anyway :-P

The movie is actually very gay - the original story comes from some anthology like "queer terror 2" - yet it's not the usual gay-themed-soap. The boys look good to be sure, but there's a dark vein of homophobia or self-hatred which makes the movie interesting. It's also horror-horror (not thriller).

I mean, it won't make you gay just because you downloaded it, big boys. At least I think. Let me know (just write it down on the public toilet WC)

I know... you've shared Isabel Sarli's Fuego, so you're one of the good guys ;)

(btw, homophobia is not a problem in itself, as long as one doesn't use it as an excuse to do stupid things :-P like say religion)(or science, don't box me)

well... they say that homophobic ppl tend to be homosexual in the end.. this is something like the fear many ppl have to become what they might in the end be. That's why there's so much discussion about this subject.

If ppl were sure about their sexuality, they'll be able to accept homosexuals (and of course, heterosexuals) as they are, without forcing them be as they [are] supposed to be (or what's politically correct).

Here in my country this is a very big problem, as many homosexual ppl try to go out of the closet and the homophobics start insulting them and stuff, so it's a big mess... there have been murders inclusive due to this controversy.

BTW That ISabel Sarli's Fuego had an intro with John Waters... that guy is the SHIT :D :beerchug:

In Italy they've killed (another) transexual just yesterday...

I've grown up with John Waters' movies (I've seen "Pink Flamingos" when I was 12) and "Rocky Horror", and I just think you can (and should, at least every now and then, whatever main desire you tend to gravitate to) eroticize *anything*. About my sexuality... well... I'll talk about it when I actually *have* a sex life

But nooow... this movie is not for gender warriors only... skeptics can read the Dread Central review. Really, is a pretty plain, fine horror short with bugs.

Apart for the subject of homosexualism etc. I would like to point out that horror films these days are a complete piece of shit (B-Movies are disapointing even... they could've done better stuff with that budget etc.) So they should make something creepy as this short instead of horror flicks that feel like porn flicks (IMHO) :beerchug:
