Laureen (Calderoni) and her stepfather Jack Nelson (Hargitay) move into one half of a cursed castle. The other half is owned by a strange recluse. At a party to celebrate Laureen's recent engagement to a local boy, Jack starts to experience realistic flashbacks depicting the burning of a witch, Isabel, who bares an alarming resemblance to his young stepdaughter. With a murdering monster on the loose and satanic rituals in the cellar, the past clashes with the present, turning the castle into a prison of violent nightmares for all who stay there.
Gianfranco Polselli, writer-director-producer of Black Magic Rites & The Secret Orgies Of The 14th Century was born in France on 26 February 1922. He became a key player in the Italian horror industry with early shockers like The Vampire And The Ballerina (aka L'Amante del Vampiro, 1960). With La Verita Secondo Satana (1972), Polselli started making a series of more extreme horror films using the pseudonym 'Ralph Brown'.
Working under this guise he made Black Magic Rites. Packing the film with an astounding amount of lesbian sado-erotica he left his contemporaries far behind in the nudity and sex stakes. By no means did he ignore the violence quota either, providing a relentless stream of images varying from heart-ripping and poker-branding to stabbings, whippings and stonings. As expected from Italian horror, there is a great stylish flair to these sordid proceedings, using hip editing and a lurid combination of red and green lights.
Featuring men in red spandex suits, the obligatory maniac servant and some bizarrely inappropriate music, this film takes Polselli's already established theme of 'sexy-horror' to new heights. A collection of seemingly unconnected scenes of tribal brutality and savage sex make up the majority of this somewhat incoherent film but regardless, it's riveting, surreal Euro-sleaze of the highest order.
