I'm actually restarting the whole thing from scratch. Just reinstalled the GK rip pack, the codec pack, and rebooted the system. I got nervous when I started encoding it and it was telling me it was going to take 4 hours to encode a projected file size of 228K.

So, I figured I'd start the whole thing over before I got really depressed.

That was the first pass only. The projected file size in the first pass is not the size of the final video. Btw. the GKnot rip pack is rather old. I would download the latest XviD version from their website. It's free.

Theres deffo something wrong there.
228k is too small even for a 700mb rip first pass let alone a 1/3rd.

As youre starting over, download the latest stable release of AVI Synth2.57 from here:

Uninstalling & reinstalling codecs can really screw up your system so I'd leave it as it is.

Just out of curiosity Sammi, how fast is your CPU & how much ram do you have? This has a strong bearing on how fast you will be able to rip.

It's pretty old, as far as comps go. It's an old laptop, pentium 3 processor, 30 gig hard drive. I'm not sure of the exact specs on it, as it's a hand me down. I do know it's a few years old.

Speed's not my concern. I'm sure it'll take awhile. My concern is getting the right percentages. I needed to go up to a 1493MB file in order to get a 44.1% of 0.742 on my compressibility test. That's with a resolution of 608x464.

I'm not worried about rushing out my first release. I'd rather know that I made something quality for my first time. The DVD I'm ripping from is a very obvious VHS rip, so I'm not expecting anything spectacular. I just want it to look the best I can get it.

Your compressibility is better being around 80% or higher.
If its a VHS rip like you say, reducing the resolution to increase the comp is the better direction to go in.
I set my sizes at 744mb for 1/6 AFR & 1488mb for 1/3 but I know that others use slightly different sizes to me.

Right click 'my computer' & select properties, this gives you your system information.

Mobile Intel Celeron CPU 1.6GHz, 960MB RAM.

That was another thing that bothered me. In order to get it to 80% compressibility, and keep it at 700MB, I had to lower the resolution to a size that looked like it might play really well on my Zune.

Should I try to find that happy medium? I'm trying to test it again with the new AVISynth.

if you take a look in the lower quality section, theres plenty of rips with a size of 4xx x 3xx & if the films rare then it doesnt stop people downloading them.

Set your rip to 744mb as that will make it a 1/6 AFR rip & will help you get a little more out of your compressibility.

I'm guessing, but I suspect that on your lappy its going to be an overnight rip job.

That's what I figured. Time is something I seem to have plenty of anymore, so it's definitely not a problem.

What combination of memory sticks give you 960MB of memory? Sounds like bad memory, but maybe its different in mobile computers...

I'm starting to feel this thing. It's becoming easier to make rips now, "House of Blood" was quite good, as I may say so myself, and yesterday I made my first anamorphic WS rip. Although it had a compressibility test of only 60% and an overflow of 102 %, it came out great.

So: thanks for the guide, thanks for the additional tips and tricks I learned.

Now I have one request: can this topic be made into a sticky? Sometimes I'm looking for some settings in GK and I really have to search for this thread. It's much more logical to have it on top of this page.

Someone should filter the useful posts out of it and create a sticky IMO.

I'll be editing the collection slightly very soon as I've had a lot of input, from people who've used it, about things I've missed or could improve & I'm gonna add a small bit on setting up you XviD settings.

I'm trying to rip the Toxic Zombies DVD I have. It's a pretty poor VHS to DVD transfer, but there's only one version out, so this is the best one can get. This morning it turned out the rip went awry, GK gave me an error which said something about "there is no ... value in line ...". I clicked away too fast, so I don't have a screenie.

This evening I started over and changed some of the settings. The compressibility test gives me only 55.8%. What did I do wrong? How can I solve this?

Have you started applying filters or using custom XVID matrices yet ?

Only time I ever had an error in GK was when I had something wrong in my script.

BTW: I edit the avs after the compressibility test, because when I click save&encode after editing it, I can't get back to the compressibility test. So actually, the above lines are not included in the compressibility test shown in the screenshots.

are you using avisynth 2.57 & using spline36 resize?

Until now I have always used Undot without any problems.

I'm using avisynth 2.5 and I don't know what spline36 resize is.
