Making Of - 'Inside the Catacombs'

The UNRATED/DC version is very different from the 'normal' version (a rip of which was released by DvF), it's not just a matter of a couple of more seconds of gore or an extra scene or two.

The UNRATED version is actually shorter than the normal one, 1:29:57 @ 23.976fps (DC) compared to 1:28:25 @ 25fps (normal version).

A few examples of the differences:

DvF's rip starts with a "Inspired by True Events" tag and an introductory text explaining about the history of the catacombs - this is completely omitted in the DC, which kicks off with writer/director/producer credits and some shots of the Eiffel Tower & the busy streets of Paris at dusk, accompanied by a voiceover..

In DvF's version, the starting credits are shown during the initial party sequence, which directly follows the aforementioned introduction. In the DC, we enter the catacombs through a sewer grate, and visit the credits-less rave after a couple of shots showing human skulls.

The party scene features some variations between the two versions, different cuts and angles; it also has a very green tone in the DC. Most importantly, the whole sequence is a lot shorter in the DC (~1,000 frames compared to ~2,700 in the normal version); this is due to the mixed-in credits, some extra shots of 'dancing' degenerates, and parts of the victim-to-be's escape attempt shown during it in the non-DC.
We have the dubious pleasure of seeing bare nipples on foul chicks in both versions.

In the DC, the ensuing chase is a bit longer, and more focused with shorter cuts to the party, and no credits interrupting. Also, the unfortunate gal's French screaming is subtitled.

The next scene, a girl learning French, is over in a few seconds in the normal version; takes quite a bit longer in the DC.

The voiceover about the postcard is the same, but in the DC comes after we're shown the card, compared to during in the normal version.

At the airport, in the unrated version, we actually see the girl getting up after being 'attacked' by the dog.

The customs check in the DC is in one piece and with less questions by the officers; in the normal version, the girl's sister picking her up is mixed in, and the guy rummaging through her bag asks her for her name etc.


Oh well, you get the picture - I'm sure the rest of the movie too is full of such small differences. It's definitely not the same version as DvF's, mislabeled as 'UNRATED' (although I'd personally refer to it as a 'Director's Cut', just like the writers/directors do at the beginning of the commentary).

It's not shorter. It's faster.

1:29:57 @ 23.976fps = 129398 frames
1:28:25 @ 25fps = 132625 frames

By the way I think you could have posted it in higher quality section.

I think you misunderstood me - 1:29:57 @ 23.976fps is the unrated version; usually, one would assume an unrated version is longer than the normal one, but:

DC: 129398 frames / normal version: 132625 frames

While the DC plays for 1:29:57 (at 23.976fps), it's still shorter than the normal version released by DvF, which runs 1:28:25 (but at 25fps).

To summarize - the DC runs 92 seconds longer, but ~4% slower, so it's actually shorter. Which is, of course, what you said; I just wanted to clarify it's also what I was trying to say.

Thanks for bringing this up, though - hope all confusion's eliminated this way.

I'm afraid I can't help you with that, as I've seen neither version. I just encoded this, without any personal interest - and hence no detailed knowledge of nudity & gore - in the movie, for a friend who wanted a 1/6DVD of the director's cut.

And yes, spud, indeed a shame about the source.

okay - aside from a super rip this film bit the high hard one - all you had to show me was Pink running around trying to act and the result was generous amounts of vomiting
