That highly depends on the filters you apply to the video stream.

When I make a 746 MB rip (better than 700, because it uses up the space of a DVDr better) with basic filtering on a system which is much slower than yours, it takes 4-5 hours.

One tip: rip during the night. Set GK up during the day, don't start encoding immediately, do all other stuff you usually do at your PC and then before you go to sleep, press "Start Encoding" in GK. This way you can keep using your PC normally and when you wake up the next morning your rip will be ready for you.

Ok,here it is..after all the troubles,i manage to get a rip..

Log file say this:

17:42:21: Movie = D:\THETHING\VIDEO_TS\stvor.avi
Total Encoding Time: 52 minutes, 24 seconds.
4.5.2008 17:42:21: Job " 1 - stvor.avi" finished.

But i'm not really happy with the quality,it's 640x352 @25..
The image is not sharp enough..

for starters, you haven't cropped at all! That's very bad.

Every single pixel of black crap needs to go!

I don't get you there, why would you want to keep the matting? There's absolutely no reason to ever do that with mpeg4, and it doesn't get you any nearer to the original source. Matting is a defect of mpeg2 not being able to specify resolution / AR in its headers, mpeg4 (XviD) does not have this defect so every single bit of matting is just waste if kept. It will not effect AR or resolution if cropped correctly.

If you are ripping the thing for your own personal collection, i would strongly suggest upping the filesize quite a lot. I would aim for at least 1/3rd DVDr which is 1490mb, and don't bother splitting. That should let you keep the full resolution of either 720x or 704x

This is what you should expect quality wise from a backup of the thing:
viewtopic.php?t=13435
Shitbusters did a good job of ripping and releasing the movie onto emule already.

File Size............: 1,487 MB ░
Duration.............: 01:48:41
Video Format.........: XviD
Video Bitrate........: 1462 kb/s
Resolution...........: 720x304 (2.37:1) [=45:19]
FPS..................: 23.976
Source...............: R1 DVD
Language.............: English

Audio Codec..........: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc
Audio Bitrate........: 448 kb/s (6 ch) CBR

Don't know how the US dvd compares to the uk one. As you can see, they've maintained 100% of the horizontal resolution and chose a better filesize.

Well,i just got started to do the riping thing so i'm experimenting before i'm fully into it.
Yes,i'm a noob considering this things
I'm into audio processing more than a video,so i tought why not combine this 2 things.
Allthough i know i have much to learn,so i'm fully aware there will be many mistakes.
That's why i'm happy to find such masters as you and some others on this forum, who will help me out to upgrade my skills :beerchug:

We all are when we start out. No worries man, keep experimenting until you get the hang of it.

Like spud says, start with the cropping. You need to do it at the start of your encoding settings, as it influences a lot of what comes next.

When you want to sharpen the image, you will need a sharpener, but I'd concentrate on more basic stuff as cropping for now.

Actually, that reminds me... i put down 'the basics' in a thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=7124
That isn't a guide to any particular software, its more of a "if you are ripping, make sure you consider all of these"

Bad cropping on the left hand side of the picture.

And this is the quality you should be aiming for:

That pretty much says it all. There is no need to rip "The Thing" another time. However you can experiment with the video.

Thanks for the post ViSCeRaL, I'll grab those extras. :beerchug:

I've tried 3 times now to rip La Terza Madre and each time I get the same oversized (by 8 MB) rip. The video bitrate is supposed to be 1691 but ends up as 1827. :?

Anyone any suggestions before I try a reinstall of the whole thing?

I've had over / undersized results before but never with AC3, only MP3 audio.

I get the same thing man..on both machines I encode on...not sure what bug it is or what...but I got to click my mbs down a bit on every rip otherwise it comes out oversized by about 5 to 8 mbs..depending on the size of the rip...No need to re-install or have a heartattack  Just tick it down to about 741 for 1/6 rips and about 1487 for 1/3..works like a charm for me. :)
