Looks like a plugin for VideoLan to help it preview .part files in eMule has been available since August. I just found it today while getting the new .30B version from eMule's download page. The plugin is just placed in Videolan's plugin directory and options are then available in VideoLan.
You can get the plugin here:
http://forum.emule-project.net/index.ph ... opic=70846
You can get VideoLan here:
http://www.videolan.org
I did find a problem once I placed the plugin in Videolan and started the program. The .part plugin would not load and it reported the file 'msvcr70.dll' to be missing. I did a search and found that I did have the file on my computer but not in the right place for the plugin. I had to place a copy of the .dll into my c:\windows\system.
If you do a search and can't find msvcr70.dll on your system you can get it here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr70
After fixing the .dll problem and turning all the options on the plugin on, VideoLan now works very well for previewing files in eMule.

Yeah, I found that plug-in last night and it works great.
From what i can gather you don't even need the first/last chunks as emule just runs the ./part file through videoLAN.
Although the downside is you can't scan through the file
But as of yet it is previewing 2MB of a 700MB avi

I'm a bit confused by that, Videolan has always had the ability to preview .part files without the first & last chunks, I've been using it for ages, what does the plugin add?
[edit] I've just read the emule homepage, I see now [/edit]

only one probs. preview of some files hang on system...
it eats almost all processor time... so it's about 1 min to envoke Task Manager and kill VL.
and it does not depend on type of codec. as seems.

Works fine in my case, no missing ddl's, no excessive resource consuming.
Veeeery nice plugin, that's what I was missing in videolan.

isn't that what this plugin was meant to fix? still drains your cpu?
@paul-scream22: with my emule (still running v. 0.29) 'preview' is grayed out untill I have the first and last segment completed. Maybe I need a new version?

Same here. I'm on .30a. And I don't think VLC would know the picture size without the first/;ast chunk, that's what you had to set manually in EdWatch to make a preview.

@prayer: yeah, I just tried it out now, and can't get it to work either.
When it comes to the part where the segment ends, and it's supposed to jump to the next one, it just shuts down the preview.

| Though, I am not a VideoLAN expert, I just can tell from my experience that one has to be prepared to get all kind of results when previewing a partial file. Whereby this is not a failure of VideoLAN, it just depends on the file format, video codec, audio codec and the available parts of the file. |
I think this pretty much sums it up for previewing .part files.

I'm having problems with this Videolan plugin. Only files with the first and/or last chunk can be previewed, which is just the same as when I used AviPreview. I have the plugin file in the Videolan plugin directory and have selected videolan as the preview program in emule 30b / LSD 13a, but the preview option is still greyed out for all but the files with the first/last part. I have checked that I have matched the right plugin version with the Videolan version also. Have I missed selecting an option somewhere? Anyone?

It is still unexplained by certain members how they can preview files without the 1st/last chunk...

Probably no magic. My client shows chunks as existing only when it is complete. I don't know how big an avi header is, probably smaller than 9 mb, so it might look like some players can play movies without first and/or last chunk.

It is much much smaller i guess, my VLC plays flicks that have just a small percent of the 1st/last chunks, but still they are needed for the preview option to be activated at all.
@MCM, if you really want to preview those files, i recommend a tool called AviPreviewC (with "C", it's not a typo). It's a DOS program, so you can use EdWatch as a GUI, which also adds a few useful options. The whole thing requires a bit of configuration, but once you set it up you can preview most video files after some chunk are downloaded, not necessarily the 1st/last..

Have u thought of not previewing thru your mule client? Just direct video lan to the part file u are after? This seems to work for me on files that do not have the preview function enabled due to first and last chunks. I also have certain files that hang the program and also freezes my sound which isnt nice If it happens i have to reboot to play MP3's or any other sound.

Polityk, I tried AviPreviewC but it closes itself down immediately when I try to run it. I'm totally alien to DOS, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I've also tried lildarien's method but that doesn't bring up any video either. So I suppose I'll have to wait for that first/last chunk of Evil Ed to find out what language it is...

Start->Run->type "cmd" and press Enter. DOS console appears. Now you can type c:/pathtoyouravipreviewc.exe, adding the necessary parameters (you will find them on the homepage, probably in some guideline). Doing this manually is not very comfortable, that's why I use EdWatch as a GUI. Search in google, you should find it easily.
Put it anywhere on your hdd, then launch it, in options set the path to your eMule and AviPreviewC.exe file and the path where you want the target file to be created. In EdWatch you can see the list of your downloads. Right click any of them and choose "Preview with APC" to generate the preview .avi file. Works only for avi's and if there is no header you'll have to set resolution manually sometimes. However, APC has its own detection and EdWatch allows you to set it very simply just by choosing the frame which is correct from the proposed ones. Sometimes it won't be able to detect the codec or extract sound, and sometimes the sound is desynchronized, but it is a very good tool if you just want to make a quick preview of some rare movie and you don't expect to get the header soon.
It may sound very complicated, but I assure you, once you start using it, it takes only 2 clicks to generate a preview. Oh, and EdWatch has its own static preview option, which allows you to view static screenshots from your partially downloaded flicks.
Hope this helps.
