Swamp Devil (2008): Cheap horror flick about a supernatural killer that is part of a forest/swamp. I liked that there were a lot of intelligent twists in the movie. The heroine is pretty enough and Bruce Dern is also a good cast. The CGI monster was fair enough. Ok movie if you have nothing else to watch, but no real recommendation.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008): This is a fantasy movie for kids. It is about a family that inherit an old house in the middle of a forest. The previous owner wrote and hid a book/guide about fairies and other supernatural beings that live in the forest. The boy finds it and unleashes an evil ogre that wants the book to destroy all peaceful life in the fairy world. Effects are good, pretty obvious CGI. The cast for the mother could have been better imho, but it was OK. There was a lot more potential in the end. So so movie.

Dèmoni 2 (1986): This is the sequel to the great first Dèmoni movie. The music was great in this one too. Especially "The Cult" song was nice. The story is almost the same as in the first part. People watch a movie and turn into demons. The only difference is that the sequel takes place inside a huge building, instead of a cinema. It has a few shots of Asia Argento as a small girl. The effects are very nice and the ok gore makes the over the top silliness of the movie watchable. Not as good as the first imho. I think Natasha Hovey was an absolutely awesome heroine in the first part, it's quite hard to beat her casting.

[Rec] 2 (2009): I loved the first one. This is as good as a sequel of part 1 can possibly get. It has the same style as part one, but drives it into an unexpected direction. If you thought it was simply about zombies, than part 2 will surprise you. But enough spoilers. Basically it continues right where part 1 ended and now a special forces team of the police enters the building to rescue the remaining inhabitants. Highly recommended if you liked part one.

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008): Wow this was way better than expected. I saw part 2 and it was totally utter crap. It had nothing that made part one enjoyable and fun. This movie however is a great sequel and would have been a nice part two. It shows you more about the Federation, their main ships and tactics. It has Casper Van Dien, new bug monsters, a lot of sarcasm on dictatorship and tits too. An absolute recommendation if you liked the first part.

Weak movie that 'lends' lots of shots from other movies like the Ring. It was enjoyable but still a watch and delete movie. The twist in the end could have been a lot better executed IMO.

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht

Still simply awesome. Klaus Kinski delivers a great Nosferatu IMO with a lot of great 'creepy' shots of him. More vampires should look like this IMO. Great to hear all the accents in the english, great scenery and off course its always good to see places you recognize yourself.

After.Life (2009)

Pretty good movie with Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson. It keeps you wondering if she's dead already or still alive. Liam performance is good IMO, he keeps it calm but at the same time you start to distrust him. The twist in the end is good aswell, you think, hah I knew it and then it appears to be a different story again. Not super but still recommended.

I've been watching loads of stuff but the only thing horror:

True Blood, decent series I think, very dramary at times but its got violence and soft porn, gore and with rumours of Bruce Campbell starring in later series its on the up.
Supernatural, picked up this series, good first series, drop a bit in the second, third series is great, fourth series is going well... too many episodes I fear. Same problem with all US shows. Know thy limits!

I can see how this one failed to get attention because of the release after the Sixth Sensen. A lot of parts made me think of it, but then again a lot of parts also didn't remind me of the Sixth Sense. I liked the fact that they added some humoristic scenes aswell, had a few laughs, and I found the first half of the movie very entertaining. After that IMO the plot is too thin. Before it gor revealed you already get a good feeling of who was the killer and how it happenend.

Since I have been to Italy, the past few days, I had an "Italy week". Here are the results:

The Stendhal Syndrome - wow, nice! It starts out in Florence at the Uffizi museum, where I was just a short while ago. Asia Argento plays a cop who has this Stendhal syndrom, which causes her to faint when she sees art. A killer takes note of this and starts persuing her, making use of her syndrome. This killer, played by Thomas Kretschmann, works around her but doesn't seem to want to kill her. I really enjoyed watching this Argento movie, and I think it is his best since Phenomena that I have seen so far. It is not just a killer story, it also delves into the human mind and how disturbed it can be. The outcome is not very surprising, but the ending is, and I'm sorry to say, but it was also a bit of a letdown. The only drawback in an otherwise great movie. Highly recommended!

Sleepless - after 17 years a killer starts murdering women again, using a children's rhyme. Because the police can't find him, they seek help from Moretti, the guy who was on the case in 1983. He is an old man, who forgets things, but he starts remebering bit by bit. He and a young man start to unravel the puzzle in order to save the lives of the women they know. The story is great, I liked it how the older detective first gets asked to help and then gets a pain in the ass for the modern policeforce. I also liked the guessing game, as it was difficult: if you can guess the killer in the beginning, you are cheating. Apart from some Argento trademarks (pov shots, for example) there is not so much special about this film, but I still liked it. Not as good as Stendhal, but still OK. Recommended.

Macabre - Mario Bava did not only have a famous father (Lamberto), but also a famous mentor in filming, namely Dario Argento. This film is Marios first and it is a good debut! A woman who cheats on her husband gets in a car accident with her lover after her daughter calls her on the phone to tell her that her son drowned. She gets committed to a mental institution and after she gets out, she moves in with a blind landlord who notices something odd about her guests. One day her daughter comes to visit and a series of terrible things from the past starts to unroll. Buildup, action, climax are well done. This is enjoyable, although you might think otherwise while watching sometimes, as it may be a bit slow at times, but the ending is great. Recommended!

Trauma - mmm, this Argento is among the least interesting for me. The storyline is OK, but it is made a bit more complicagted than necessary and it feels like it was done in an arty way, if you catch my drift. Asia stars as an anorexic and suicidal girl who escaped from a clinic and now she needs help by a guy who just prevented her from jumping off a bridge. The role of the clinic nis nice in this film, as it gets used in several different ways. Because the girl has mental problems, you also tend to mistrust her a bit, but all in all, the story cannot bear this film enough. The ending is a bit meh, I thought it was a dull trick to o it like this. Maybe I will think of it better after a second watching, but this time around I didn't like it so very much. Still it is a good thriller, just not Argentos best one.

Touch of Death - a funny Fulci, it exists. And by that I don't mean funny as in SBiG, but as in dark humour. Lester has a gambling problem and he solves it by dating rich women and then killing them. Fulci tries to make this film more than it is, by adding some sort of personality disorder thingy to the main character, but that is kind of fail. What is left over is a straightforward gory film with repeating cycles of date, kill, gamble, with a change of look everytime. I laughed a few times, but the ending was kind of dull. Don't expect too much and you will enjoy it. Recommended, especially if you like Fulci.

Zombi 4 After Death - gratuitous Italian zombie action. A childhood trauma is shown, and then we get the story about a group of people returning to the island where the trauma took place. Lots of zombies appear and they have to be killed, of course. Very straightforward, no subplots or anything, just a lot of zombies and people who need to kill them all in order to survive. I liked the ending. Claudio Fragasso actually surprised me with this film (later he makes Troll 2), I had thought this would be very, very bad (in an annoying way). While it isn't a masterpiece, it is a prertty nice and trashy zombieflick. Campy fun, recommended!

The Phantom of the Opera - a different approach to the classic story. The phantom is not a fired musician this time, but a kid raised by rats in the catacombs of the operahouse. Now he is an adult admiring the voice of Christine Daaé and pushing his love for her a little too far. In the meantime there is also this young nobleman who loves Christine. The backbone of the storyline is the same, but there are also a lot of differences. I didn't like the ending so much, but the gory deaths were very nice. In the line of Argentos work, I think this takes a place just below the average, as it is not a really special movie like some of his other work.

All the Colours of the Night - mmm, this film shows why I'm not a 100% devoted fan of giallo. While Fulci, Bava and Argento can make me watch giallo and enjoy them (sometimes even thoroughly), this one is another example of why I often find them boring. The pace is a bit slow, the deaths are almost bloodless and the story is a bit superficial. I was surprised to notice that the DVD has a screenshot spoiling the plot about the killer on its backside. Therefore all possible surprise is gone while watching. One of the least interesting movies of the past week.

Psychosis - charisma Carpenter is a horror novelist who needs inspiration and comes to place where teenagers got killed years ago. In the beginning you get to see those killings and they are quite gory. After that you will have to do with visions and flashbacks, which is a pity. Charisma starts to see and hear things, her husband (played by a guy who totally cannot act, btw) thinks she might have a relapse into mental problems she used to have. I don't get the title, because if Charisma is supposed to be psychotic, it doesn't come out well. If someone else is supposed to be, I wonder who it might be. The ending is dull. Not really something to remember.

Blood On The Highway - funny horror flick which spoofs the genre in a nice and enjoyable way. It took a while before I understood that the monsters weren't zombies or demons but vampires. The vampires are monsters but also organised: they protest to get more fresh meat (reminded me a bit of American Zombie). The girls look nice, the slut is over the top and the jokes are funny (most of the time). Don't try to take this seriously, you will fail. Recommended.

Zardoz - this is not a film, it is a trip which is caught on celluloid. Sean Connery stars as some sort of savage who ends up in the vortex, where all violence is banned and where everything is ruled by women and a stringent routine. Everyone is immortal, but they are starting to long for death (at least, some of them). Punishment by ageing is to prevent crime. There are many weird 70s sfx, which emphasize that this is a trip and not a film. Watch when under the influence, otherwise you might think it is a bit weird.

Gargoyle (aka Gargoyle Wings of Darkness) - Romania. Some Interpol agents are searching for criminals, and when they find them, they are dead. Who killed them? In the meantime, art is being restored in a church, but the restorators find a painting hidden under the orthodox icons. It shows some sort of monster. Well, the rest is all guessable, but there are some nice moments in this one. The cgi is bearable (the dark again) and there is a nice twist to the storyline. The Saphire rip has a wrong AR, though. Nothing really special, but enjoyable enough. Make your choice.

Hunter Prey - wow, this was actually pretty good! It made me think of District 9 a few times, and whereas the latter is a better film, Hunter Prey is worth the watch. I won't spoil too much, but I really liked the way the director made you switch your sympathies. Little action, few characters, great film. Recommended!

La Tumba De Los Muertos Vivientes - the Spanish version is the most complete one, and since I speak a little Spanish I gave it a try. Storyline was good to follow, as it wasn't very complicated. During World War Two there was a treasure which got transported by the nazis and then the Americans robbed them (yes, historical it is very incorrect). The scenes in which this got depicted were hilarious, with almost all teinted and black haired nazis versus almost all teinted and black haired Americans. The lone survivor of this fight gets murdered and his son will go out for the treasure. Then he of course runs into the zombies, like the murderer before him and two stray girls at the very beginning of the movie who are in the oasis for no apparent reason. These are the only zombie scenes however: all the rest of the time they are asleep or something. If you like bad movies or are a fan of Franco, watch this.

2001 Maniacs, Field of Screams - a sequel to a remake, what do we call that? Remaquel? Or semake? Well, my expectations were below zero for this one, but soon it appeared that some of the cast of the remake was in this sequel too, and fortunately Christa Campbell is one of them, as she provides the necessary eyecandy for mindless crap like this. What I didn't like is that the main character in the redneck clan got played differently (Moseley ain't no Englund, y'all) and the fact that it still totally lacked any atmosphere. What I liked was that some killings from the original (Two Thousand Maniacs by Gordon Lewis, a must see, btw) that got skipped in 2001 Manics, got their turn in this one. And I liked the spoof of The Simple Life with a surrogate Paris Hilton holding a dead chihuahua. Mildly recommended.

An end of the world battle between gangsters, cops and zombies. <-- knowing this there isn't much more to say about it. Thats just it. Well done though and you get right into the action.
Spoiler:
I really likes that skinny woman, so is a tough motherfucker.

À l'intérieur (2007)

Another good one where you almost immediatly get thrown into the action. A pregnant couple gets into a car accident with another pregnant woman
Spoiler:
which eventually leads to a bloodbath to get 'her' child back.
Nice sneaky movie with a couple of suprising events.

Martyrs (2008)

The best of the three IMO.
Spoiler:
A lunatic girl turns out not so quite lunatic when her girlfriend eventually finds out the truth behind het history and the people who tortured her. Was also nice that for once there wasn't a happy ending although I thought that it was coming.
Recommended.

Hey Pure, could you use spoiler tags when writing about how a movie ends? You kind of spoiled

Spoilertag solves everything!

Neighbor - I read that I should watch this well after I had eaten, so I postponed my midnight snack for this film. I could have eaten it while watching it, though. Yes, this is a gruesome movie, but it is too fake for me or I have been numbed over the years watching gory crap, but I didn't feel the need to grab a bucket once. What you get is violence, and a lot of it. The girl who commits all thi violence doesn't have a clear reason to do so and it doesn't get explained (or very badly, cause I missed it). In the end of the movie she wears a great outfit, though. For those who have seen Sick Girl, it is omething like that, although in Sick Girl there was some background storyline. This was not a good film, but hey, maybe it is gonna be cult someday. It is not like I Spit on Your Grave is a masterpiece, eh?

Arcade - a computergame takes the souls of its players when they lose a level. OK. This game, Arcade, is the newest in computerdevelopment (in 1993, that is) and the graphics are "unbelievable" according to the nerd in the group. This makes the entire film very cute, as the most developed thing you get to see is a blocky face moving about and a camera going through corridors with spikes. How players get lost into the game and how this problem is faced by Alex, the heroine of the movie, is kind of simplistic. I think that back in 1993 this movie only leaned on its graphics, but since the magic is long gone now, it kind of falls flat. Only if you want to see some computer nostalgia.

Snub - an atomic bomb blasts away London and a self procalimed important member of the government hides in a secret nuclear underground bunker (or SNUB). Thjis movie is for laughs, becasue no serious director would allow a sign posted inside the bunker which reads: "secret nuclear underground bunker". I mean, what is the point of that? When they're all there they need to get out of course, but since there is a lot of radiation this is easier said than done. Some cliche roles are played, like the cowardly member of the government, the brave soldier, etc. You don't get to see the zombies, or the whatevers, I'm not even sure they were meant to be zombies. The ending looks cheap, it really falls out o the sky. And it is incredibly stupid. Better look for a good zombieflick.

Sure, but IMO I didn't spoil that much at all. But I'll use the spoiler tags from now on if I copy paste from SBiG to here  :beerchug:

Edit:
fixed, for if anyone else feels it spoiled their mood to watch it :D

Well, maybe I won't feel spoiled when I watch this in the future, but anything considering the ending of a movie can be spoiling, imo. Thx for using the spoiler tags ;)

Hunting Grounds - ahem, well, yes. This Canadian movie is very Canadian as in that everyone speaks English with a heavy French accent apart from the few actors whose mother tongue actually is English. There's also a lot of French being spoken and sometimes it is subbed, and sometimes it isn't (way to go there, filmstudio - do it all or nothing next time, please). Pretty annoying if you ask me, because this didn't make it easier to follow the story. On to that one, then: it is the near future and all cities have become some sort of reservations for mankind. You can't go out, but when a small group of youngsters does so, they encounter zombies. All the rest is rabble, there is some subplot with an ex-con, but this movie doesn't rise above the averageness of so many zombieflicks. The scifi stuff in it is pathetic, btw.

Seedpeople - the director of this one watched two movies and then decided to make this one. The first movie he saw was Critters, and he picked the alien origin and the rolling furballs which turn into little teethy monsters from that. Then he watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers and he took the reproduction of the aliens and the fact that they possess human beings from that, including the fact that normal humans cannot show any emotion or they will be discovered. The gore is very nice, but the story is a patchwork of stolen stuff like I wrote above. Enjoyable for bad moviefans at least.

Zombie Women Of Satan - I had read several reviews of this on imdb. I read that it was so dumb and unfunny someone's got their eyes bleeding and I read that it was hilarious and the funniest movie since (name of movie). So I knew what to expect, or at least I had a hunch. Well, about the funpart: they were right, it was not funny. Well, the jokes aren't funny. ome other things are, but I doubt if they were meant to be funny. All other bashing was a bit exaggerated, and one user was totally right when he wrote: 'Seriously, if you are watching a movie named "Zombie Women of Satan" you should be watching it with some friends and good amount of beer. If you were expecting some fancy CGI and a plot written by Michael Crichton and directed by Steven Spielberg, you are an idiot.' Amen. Liked: the zombies were all women (some of them even looked good) with bleeding eyes. Disliked: the very childish jokes.

Don't Torture A Duckling - according to several people the best movie Fulci ever made. It is also his personal favourite. My expectations were high, but it turned out to be a giallo without any gore. OK, there were some minor shots, but it wasn't about gore in this film. The story is good, I liked it. It is not so hard to guess the killer, but it is easy to get misled and you might jump from one possibility to another. Acting is good, alo from the children. So, although it didn't meet my expectations, it was a good film after all. If I wouldn't have known the director, however, I wouldn't have guessed Fulci. Recommended.

Devil's Prey - cliche start, with teens going to a rave and then when they head back they drive into a woman on the road who says she is on the run from the shadows. The shadows turn out to be a satanic cult sacrificing humans in order to keep Satan satisfied. As always in satanic movies, entire towns are involved in the cult. There was a person involved whom I didn't expect it from, though. I had expected a very lame movie, and whereas this is not a masterpiece, it could have been worse. A lot.

Vamp - a nice vampiremovie, and funny too. I laughed a few times because the jokes were good. They were genuine horror jokes, not spoofing other movies per se, and not making the awful mistake to joke about body functions. I liked the atmosphere, but as you might know, I'm a sucker for 80s movies and this is one of the better among them. Better as in more enjoyable, I mean. I just read that Michelle Pfeiffer's sister is in this one. Heh. Recommended.

Exterminator City - for some reason I expected some zombie action in this one. Boy, was I wrong! The first 15 minutes I couldn't stop laughing: what I was seeing was just too hilarious. After those 15 minutes I started getting used to it and I calmed down a bit. What this ilm is, is a repetitive strain of events. What happens everytime is this: you get to see a (soft)pornstar doing something (half)naked. Then a robot serial killer shows up, kills her and then we get to see the robot detective and the robot psychiatrist discussing how to catch him. Then it starts all over gain. Pretty boring, yes. There was one good joke, and that was when the serial kilelr robot enters the house of Julie Strain he finds an Oscar and looks amazed at it. I laughed at that one. Well, if you like bad movies, this is for you (the robots look ace!).

Before we watched this one I already read some about it
Spoiler:
and some viewers we're comparing it with a mix of The Hills Have Eyes and TCM,
maybe it was because I read it and then watched it but I indeed also saw some references and simularitites. Still it was a fun watch. The father of the opposing 'family' cracked me up a few times although I'm pretty positive it wasn't meant that way.

Another enjoyable French movie, although the plot gets pretty thin at some point I very much enjoyed watching it and so did my gf. Jack Daniels FTW!!
