Ah, ok, these two passages are for the XviD settings, all the previous part in which you set filesize, resolution, AR, etc, is omitted. The custom matrix is very simple to use, you just select MPEG-Custom instead of H263/MPEG, then "Load matrix" and select the Jawor one I've attached here. In both passes.

Ah, ok I see now I will have a go with a couple of test runs first  Oh, and I think we may have hijacked this thread

LOL @ weezee's "I don't know your encoding skills".

@ Eldin: yes, you two are hijacking! What weezee posted here, is something to do in the final steps before you press "Start encoding", it is all about this pop-up from GK: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g166/ ... /XVID2.jpg
and for the matrix this one: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g166/ ... /XVID3.jpg

OK everything else concerning encoding (this move or else) please in the ripping thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15117

Maybe they will be one day ;)

He is starting out as a GK ripper, moving away from AutoGK. So that's why I had my  moment.

@ Eldin: Put in the values chupacabra posted above, combined with the script weezee gave you, this will be a nice start for your encoding career :)

Alright, alright, enough with the confusion. I was waiting that you release you rip, but looks like I will do it, since I have the Uncut version.

The UNCUT version can be found on the VCI Entertainment DVD only (as far as I know). What's written on the back of the DVD cover:

"The classic of British horror has been painstakingly restored by VCI (with the cooperation of the British Film Institute) and is now complete and uncut; including more than 2 minutes of additional footage, which had been cut from the U.S. version, titled HORROR HOTEL. This also marks the first time ever this uncut version has been seen on video with it's original title (THE CITY OF THE DEAD)."

Well, I think it say it all... I don't think there's a more 'uncut' version of this flick than this one on the VCI DVD. The DVDRip of the VCI Entertainment DVD is coming soon...

Two cuts of the film are known to exist:
- The original "The City of the Dead" UK cut,

*Most of Patricia Jessel's cursing of the village in the opening scene (~0:50).
*When Christopher Lee and Dennis Lotus have a discussion about belief in the supernatural (when Lotus arrives to pick up Venetia Stevenson), the Horror Hotel print removes a lot of the discussion. (~0:50).
Thanks to rewind user Tim_Rogerson for confirming the differences between the two cuts.

Alright, alright, enough with the confusion. I was waiting that you release you rip, but looks like I will do it, since I have the Uncut version.

Ok, you do realise that I already posted a rip for the uncut 'VCI' dvd on the first page of this thread ? I have the dvd myself, the reason I didn't release a rip is because a rip is already spread on emule

Ouch, I didn't check the specs:
Duration : 1h 17mn

It seems Eldin is right. Is this the same edition then?

No, I didn't knew, and how could I, there's absolutely no informations at all on your post as to which Cut it is, the US or UK cut, and from what source is the rip.

Don't take it wrong, but since for many movies, there's a bunch of different DVD source, it's good to mention it now what is the source, it help knowing the picture quality and if it's uncut or not. Just check out my Rawhead Rex screenshot comparison of four different DVD (scroll down to Post #9)(viewtopic.php?f=5&t=151&), and you'll understand why it's important to mention (well, at least it is for me :P ).

Anyway, I can release my rip, so peoples are free to just take it or not, it's not a bad thing...

Hi there, I never said you couldn't release your rip I was just pointing out that it was the same version as the one that I posted a link to, the runtime in the specs would have told you that  I did not mention the source dvd as it was not my release I was just providing a link and some screenshots to a rip that I had already downloaded as Redveil was asking for a reshare and I provided an alternate link. In peace my friend :beerchug:

The.City.Of.The.Dead.(aka.Horror.Hotel).1960.DVDRip.XviD.AC3.-.UK.Version.(VCI.DVD.-.Original.British.Version).avi

that one ran out of sync yesterday playing with XBMC, and really out of sync. Not enjoyable no more. First it was bad, then there was some decoding error (a block flash) and after that it was even worse...
Now checking on VLC, but can't reproduce the error there, all looks synced...
But XBMC runs out of sync on double check too...

Never had this before...
Let's try a mkv-remux...

The remux gives a warning: The.City.Of.The.Dead.(aka.Horror.Hotel).1960.DVDRip.XviD.AC3.-.UK.Version.(VCI.DVD.-.Original.British.Version).avi' spoor 1: Dir AC3 spoor bevat 3072 bytes aan niet-AC3 data welke zijn overgeslagen. De audio/video synchronisatie kan verloren zijn gegaan.
(translated: Track 1: Dir AC3 track contains 3072 bytes non-AC3 data which were skipped. The A/V sync can be lost.

So that rip isn't clean...
the resulting mkv remux looks synced on both VLC & XBMC however...

But personally I think this is a lower quality rip: limited resolution which doesn't preserve any of the film-pelicule-character, unneeded rescaling resulting in quantization errors on fine things (such as the hair of women) + sync-problems...

@Aszazin: Well, sorry if the rip doesn't look perfect man, but i've try my best, and did it with the best knowledge I have (and help from a member here for the XviD codec, elchupacabra).

Used Gordian Knot to make the rip. In AVI, with XviD codec, i' ve crop with the 'Pixel' setting, and adjusted manually the size all around. Then, made a 2-Pass convertion, with Inverse Telecine (since it was NTSC), and removed the Packed Bitstream.

Can't tell you what were wrong here, as i'm not expert at ripping like some group are. I didn't apply any kind of filter to 'clean' or correct the picture. Maybe that's why! Would have to learn 'filter' and how to apply some if needed.

Here's my XviD setting i'm using with the help of elchupacabra. Let me know if you see any 'error', and if you have any recommendation, for next time i'll make a rip, that it would be better in term of playability.

Image Image Image

As for the Audio setting, well, i've used the AC3 setting in GK, yes, since the file that DGIndex made was a .ac3, I though that the sound would be in higher quality if I would use AC3 instead of VBR or CBR MP3. Let me know if i'm wrong here...!

No problem! I sure appreciate the effort. Looks like some error got in somewhere messing with the sync. Some players seem to handle it fine, but XBMC didn't...

Such things happen...
Most important things were done well (inverseTC etc.)

Personally I keep away from xvid/divx codex since there is x264.
Also, DVD has anamorphic pixels, which is a compression on it's own, I'd keep that when ripping. Just keeping the original anamorphic resolution (for PAL/NTSC material) always yields the best result. (for HD 1080p material going to 720p is ofcourse a different matter). Resizing means quantization, and when you play fullscreen, it gets quantization artifacts again. If it happens once, it's often not that bad, but twice messes with anything sharp in the image.

For audio, mp3 is about the worst thing, so choosing AC3 is good. Sound was good for your rip (sync not counted:)

But that's my opinion about a high quality rip.
I wouldn't mind a new rip, but I'm on the torrent of the DVD now, so who know I'll give it a try someday myself. (Talkin' is always easy, ain't it?)
