The Loved Ones (2009) - One of the best modern horror flicks I've seen in the past few years. It's about a kid who says no when a shy girl asks him to a school dance and the chaos that ensues. I don't want to say too much about it because there are some nice surprises from the get go. It feels like a slightly twisted teen angst movie at first, but quickly spirals into a brutal, well-written horror picture.

An Idiot Abroad (2010) - It's not horror, but I really enjoyed the latest effort by Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington. Fans of their previous offerings won't be disappointed.

I had a nice night of Grindhouse galore:

The Snow Creature - botanists are visiting the Himalayas (yes, I wondered too what they were trying to find in eternal snowland) and then they encounter a yeti. It is very easy to spot the yeti, because it is black (?!?). After a short fight they capture it and take it back to the US in a special refrigerator. Of course the yeti escapes and hides out in the sewer system. It takes the police and the scientits very long to figure this out ("How can it have trvaled for so long without anyone seeing him?" is a question asked seriously by the head policeman). In the end they capture and kill him. End of story. Hilariously bad movie. Only for bad moviefans.

Mondo Cannibale - Jess Franco's take on cannibalism is a treat for bad moviefans. This one is among the worst of the worst in the cannibal genre, maybe even worse than Cannibal Terror. It has painted white people acting as African cannibals (they are supposed to be in Malawi). Some of them didn't even bother to shave their moustaches, so you can see them through the paint. It also looks like they took a book called "Flags of the World" and used it for inspiration while painting the faces. The blood and guts effects look incredibly fake and it doesn't help when you get to see a cannibal gnawing on human flesh at the same spot in the body for 3 minutes. The lead character looses an arm in a fight with cannibals (they eat it) and after that, we see him walking around, trying to hide the fact that his arm is simply folded. This is pretty hard in some scenes, especially when he undresses for a fight, I lol-ed. In the end the lead cannibal turns out to be English speaking after all. A bukcetload of fakeness and gore, this is a must see for bad moviefans.

Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll - Paul Naschy stars in this murder mystery where you can guess the murderer when you choose the character which is the least probable suspect in the beginning. The fake blood has its nice 70s red colour and the eyes which are gouged out by the killer everytime look incredibly fake too. The actresses are all worth looking at and they try to do a decent job. I thought the policeman acted quite well, too. In the end you will learn that there is an extra twist to the murders. Nice. Recommended, especially if you can suspend disbelief for the effects.

Fraulein Without a Uniform - funny nazisploitation. Little sexual violence and no torture. There are several things to laugh at: "What's with the chastity belt?" "I'm saving myself for the Fuhrer" More of this follows, everyone is having sex in this film everywhere, the few military scenes are filled with failure and you don't have to be a soldier to see that (four tanks attack a group of infantry - one gets blown up - the tanks retreat and are four again). I liked it how they put thought in details, like there is a woman on a train reading 'Signal' a nazi propaganda magazine. That was nice. So it is kind of special to see historical accuracy mingled with outright failure. Recommended for bad moviefans.

Uninvited - hilarious catmonster movie! I don't like cats so I had extra fun with this film. A labcat spawns monstercats from its mouth and when the labcat ends up on the boat of a guy who is gonna rip a bank on the Caymans, there is a lot of fun ensued. A young Rob Estes guards his hormonal interests with juvenile fury. All around the boat couples materialize while the catmonster is making new victims. Some real bad sfx come along, like the thunderstorm scene where we can easily see that the boat is a miniatutre and the lightning is superfake. I had great fun watching this. Recommended for bad moviefans.

Rammbock - aka Siege of the Dead. A German film of about an hour which tells us about one day in Berlin when an outbreak has happened and several people get locked in their apartemtns with the living dead probing the streets outside. I thought this was pretty well made. The decision making, the cooperation between neighbours, it was all thought out nicely. The ending is good enough. Recommended.

Fritt Vilt (Cold Prey - 2006) - Norwegian horror about five twenty-somethings who decide to hole up in an old resort after one of them breaks their ankle on a remote mountain. The motel is - of course - occupied by some maniac. The film holds up well against other modern slashers with nice performances by the principal actors, a snow-gear clad, pick-axe wielding killer, a rad killer's lair, and a story with just enough meat. Definitely recommended.

Just started Boardwalk Empire and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. Fantastic first two episodes as far as I'm concerned, but I'm a sucker for prohibition gangster stuff.

I Sell The Dead (2008): Man this movie really had a lot of potential and used little of it. It's about a grave robber (well he is rather a corpse robber) that is selling corpses. On his digs he finds some weird corpses too: like vampires and zombies. This is supposed to be a horror/comedy and it wasn't funny enough for me. There are some nice jokes, but in the end there is too much stupid talking in this one. Eventually the CD with it ended up in the trash bin. Nothing more to say.

The Alphabet Killer (2008): Macabria pretty much sums it up in his post over here. A cop has a break down after chasing the Alhphabet Killer. She later returns and is chasing him again. There are some weird visions she has about the victims, which make no sense at all and give no additional information. They could have simply left these scenes out. The ending is über shit and the whole movie is so crappy that I'll be able to smell it in the DVD store miles away.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns - modern nunsploitation. In the 70s, this genre took on covents and had nuns having sex with monks and some religious torture (penance). Today, this genre takes on a new role (or it is a new genre, of course): nuns become violent killers. I already saw Nun of That before, which was kind of funny. This one is more grim, there is regular rape and some shootouts become massacres. Inbetween there are a few lesbian sexscenes and a plot about priests trafficking drugs. What really annoyed me is that AV went out of sync about halfway into the movie. It becomes more out of sync towards the end and then you see a gun blazing and 1 second later you hear BLAM! Very annoying. Also, there were some blocky scenes. And pretty important too: it is incomplete, the ending is missing. It'd be nice to see a proper rip of this. As for the film: a bit Rodriguez/Tarantino-like, but with nuns and not as funny as R/T movies.

Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay - not a very long movie on an outbreak in Tpkyo, but still it takes a good while before we even get to see Battle Girl. When we do, she opens the battle against the zombies and against the captain who doesn't want to let the world know what happened in Tokyo and therefore kill veryone who survived the outbreak. Battle Girl reminded me of Machine Girl. There is enough violence going on and the only thing which it lacked a bit was zombie eating scenes: you only get to see some shadows of that. Luckily this was not as weird as most Jap movies, I liked this one. Recommended.

The Naked Cage - a woman gets involved in a bank robbery via her (ex-)husband and now she has to do time. In the ptrison, she quickly learns it is best not to spy for the warden and to talk tough and act likewise to the stron women inside. Of course there are a lot of problems: violence, racial disorder, drugs, etc. Oh, and of course there is the raping guard, present in every women's prison. Near the end we get to see a nice big prison riot where the guard doesn't have any doubts about using his shotgun. For a WIP movie, this was kind of feel good. The main character doesn't get into too much trouble compared to her friends inside. There was no torture, except for one forced drug intake by someone else. The only thing was that the movie in all was kind of long (almost 100 minutes) and my attention span was fading halfway through, only to get back into the story when the riot came along. I can only recommend this to exploitation fans.

The Haunting Of Morella - Nicole Eggert plays two roles in this one. The haunting Morella, and her daughter, whom Morella wants to possess. Based on a Poe story, this plot involves a witch burning and the depressed husband and his daughter who have been living alone in a castle ever since, just accompanied by their household staff. Lenora, the daughter, will soon be 18 years old and then inherit the whole thing. When people start to disappear, however, the lawyer who is taking care of the inheritance, gets involved and now it is up to him and the family to stop the evil which is about to turn loose on the castle and the village. Atmospheric story, like we all know from Poe, good acting, some goofy looking sfx and some nice looking women (Maria Ford and Lana Clarkson). Recommended.

ThanksKilling - this film takes "suspension of disbelief" to new levels. The premise of a turkey gone mad and killing everyone, with axes and other stuff, is already weird enough. Then this movie takes it over the top and when you think you have seen it all, it just puts some more icing on the cake. Enough gore to go on and, like I said, superoverexaggerated weird stuff. Acting is bad. This is one for the bad moviefans.

La habitación de Fermat (2007): Four mathematicans are lured into a trap. A shrinking room. They are given riddles to solve. If they fail, the room is getting smaller ans smaller. While solving the riddles they also have to figure out, who is trying to kill them, why and how can they get out of the room. This was quite a nice movie. Good acting and atmosphere. Recommended. I posted one of the riddles here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22282, good luck!

How to Make a Monster - this 2001 film has totally nothing to do with the film from the 50s which bears the same name. This one is about a team of computernerds who have to save a computergame which was under development,. but management chose to fire the previous team of nerds. Under the stress of time pressure, and with a promised bonus of a million dollars in their minds, they set to work. one does weapons, one does AI and one does sounds. Best scene is where Julie Strain comes in and does some sword wielding movements wearing a suit which is connected to the PC. After this, the suit comes alive and starts killing people. Of course this can only be stopped in one way (guess which one :wacky: ). Although not very old, the PC game images look incredibly retarded and unscary. The rest of the movie is OK, the sfx and the acting are quite well done. Clea Duvall as the intern who saves the day is a bit over the top though (writer's fault). Mmm, I'm not sure whether to recommend this one or not. I'll go for mildly.

The Beast Must Die - this movie makes it game to guess who the werewolf is, they start the film with the question and tell you that you will get some thinking time after all clues have been given. Well, I settled for a nice guessing game. OK, story evolves, ah, a clue. So I gathered some clues but then again, it could not be that person, and neither could all others actually. When a clue was presented, it immediately became obsolete, for example: they pass around a silver candle, because minute silver particles will enter the werewolf's blood and it will be poisonous to it. All touch the candle and nothing happens. OK. A bit before the final scenes, the image is set still and a clock appears which counts down 30 seconds of thinking time, in the meantime you hear stuff like "Is it Paul? Or is it maybe Caroline?" After that, you will get the answer. I must say that I didn't guess right. But I also must say that I didn't get any clue whatsoever to pinpoint this werewolf. In retropsect I can safely say that even if there were some clues which pointed to this person, they were all pointing at at least one other person too. So bad job on the guessing game, imo. The movie itself is a bit meh. The werewolf looks like a dog and is not scary, the only thing really interesting is the security camera setup in the entire woods surrounding the estate of the protagonist. It is not a good movie, but nothing to see for bad moviefans either, I'm afraid.

Barbarian Queen - because of the Haunting of Morella I'm a bit into Lana Clarkson now, so I clicked and watched this. Hahaha, what a great bad movie ride! I had a lot of fun with rubber clubs which you can see bending over the bodies, spears thrusted under other people's arms very obviously faking it was into the body, etc, etc. One very nice shot was where we see the Barbarian Queen waiting to start an attack on her enemy, the main culprit. In the background we also see a guy with a sword, waiting. Then, all of a sudden both begin to move: this was obviously the moment when the director shouted "Action!" and everything went in motion again    A must see for bad moviefans!

The House Of Witchcraft - A guy has nightmares in which his head is cooked ina cauldron in an old house. His wife takes him away fro a while to release the stress, but they arrive at a house which is the same one from the dreams. Then strange things start to happen and the guy is thinking about witchcraft because his wife is interested in the subject. Well, after half of the movie was over, I figured out who the witch was so there wasn't any surprise for me in store. It is kind of decent, but not groundbreaking. If you like Italo horror, go for it.

@Slayer: I never cease to be surprised by the sheer amount of movies you see.

Saw Repo Men today and went with the lowest of expectations, heard really bad things about it. It´s not horror, but has a fair amount of gore. Not as bad as I was led to believe. Semi-ruined by a bad ending (IMO) but a nice ride.

I'm a bit surprised myself too, I had Christmas holidays for a forthnight and I watched 50 movies during that time...

Almost completed watching my entire collection. I don't know how many films I have seen in total, but since I started to record them in my collection (which was end of July 2006), I have seen almost 2000 movies and doumentaries. Series are not counted. I have some 500 to go, then I will have finished. For horror I'm pretty far: only about 60 to go.

Back to watched movies:

Hercules - the 1983 abomination. A real joyride if you like bad movies. There is much crap in it, like in Barbarian Queen. The story follows the legend of Hercules pretty well, to suddenly turn scifi and send some mechanised monsters to kill him. Huh? :? And after that, we get some more stupid witchcraft, predictable fighting and stop motion monsters. It was a bit long, but I enjoyed it. Great stuff for bad moviefans.

Doctor Mordrid - Jeffrey Combs usually plays in movies which are either great or campy. This one is campy. He talks to a pair of eyes in space, and has to fight a blonde muscle guy who has some stupid satanistic minions. In the meantime he tries to keep a low profile, but he can't take the curiosity of the girl down the hall in his apartment. He shows her some stuff, but then he has to fight once more to save the world from evil. Effects are laughable in this film, the fighting is meh, there aren't many beautiful girls in it, but still I had fun. Mostly because of the weirdness and the sfx. Another one for the bad moviefans.

The House Of Clocks - another one of the Italian "House-quadrilogy", the title says it all. It is a house full of clocks. And they have special powers, somewhat controlled by one of the elderly people who live there. Fulci portrays the people in his typical way: there is always something wrong with someone you see on the screen. When a small group of young perpetrators enters the house with the idea to rob the elderly, there's a nasty surprise for them in store. Nice film, I liked it, but it suffers from the great doisease which victimized so many movies before: a stupid ending. I wrote it before and I'll do it again: stop this film 10 minutes before it's running time is over. Although Fulci gives it a nice twist in the final minute, the ending is much better if you just skip the last ten. The rest of the movie I can recommend, especially to Italo horror fans.

Nightwing - it is not everyday you see a non-western where most characters are native Americans, but yesterday was such a day. In the territory of the Maski tribe, several things come together: oil is found, an old medicine mandies, and a large colony of vampire bats appears. The sheriff of the Maski sets out to protect his people, and while doing so he meets a guy who is a bat-scientist. Together they start hunting the creatures. Acting is quite good in this one, which is a blessing, because 90% is dialogue, there is few bat action for a movie which runs for 100 mins. Effects are pretty poor: sometimes you can see the swarm is a bird swarm and not a bat swarm. But, because there is so little bat action, it doesn't make it a bad movie. I liked it how several storylines melted together in the end. Recommended.

The Nightmare Never Ends - got this from the nazisploitation part of the UEC, but there is actually only one scene which fits that genre. Most of this film is about satanism and a guy who wrote a book called "God is dead", whose wife is deeply religious. They all get entangled in a satanist's plot, together with a policeman and some other people. Not everyone believes what is going on, but the satanists are there, lead by a guy who doesn't seem to age. I was surprised by the fact that this was a Troma movie. It wasn't really bad and there also wasn't an overuse of gore or bad humour. I especially liked the ending, it was great. Recommended.

The Suckling - a baby gets aborted and then turns into something you don't wanna meet in a dark alley. At first I thought this would be some baby horror, like It's Alive or something, but it isn't. Instead, it is a monster movie where the monster is able to seal off an entire house and then kill off the people inside one by one. I liked this one because of the monster and some very rude things which are going on in the illegal abortion clinic which is housed in the building the monster sealed off. This also had a nice ending, but I recommend this to bad moviefans only.

Blood Moon Rising - mmm, this was a bit meh. It had zombies, vampires, werewolves, but it doesn't cut it. The girsl are looking just not hot enough to be in a B-horror. What really pissed me off was that the filmmakers wanted to ride on the Grindhouse succes of Tarantino/Rodriguez, by adding the grindhouse effects we know from them. They even copied the "missing reel" thing, but, like the rest of the movie, it just doesn't cut it. Firstly, it is overused, secondly it is wrongly used and thirdly, it becomes all obsolete the moment bad cgi enters thescreen shortly after. So, while this is a nice brainless passtime, I would not recommend this to anyone, as it is a film which keeps trying, but never succeeds.

Ilsa: Queen of the Nazi Love Camp - this is not a film, it is a recording of a performance. What you see, is a stage where 3 actors are playing out a play (it is a bit of a musical, but luckily they don't sing all the time) and 2 musicians are playing some background music. There ar e different camrea angles, but that's it. No set, no sfx, nomake up, etc. It all comes down to the content of the play. The title promises a lot, but I thought the result was a bit meager. There are of course some scenes where nazism is ridiculed, and I thought there were some jokes which were a bit funny, but: often the audio was a bit muffled, so I couldn't hear well what they were saying/singing, probably missing some humour here and there. And: there were scenes in it which, at first glance, didn't have anything to do with the rest of the play. This last thing is later corrected, when most, if not ll, come together. It was weird to watch this. I don't think I'll ever watch it again. I had hoped for more Ilsa spoof stuff and it did come out, but it was too little for me.

Dark House - Jeffrey Combs is a master of horror attractions and he invites a group of young actors to come and act in his new attraction: Dark House. One of the actors is a girl who has a trauma from the past connected to the house. When Combs shows them the power of his hologram show around the house, they are all impressed. Two reporters come to see the show, but then things start to go wrong. Fine movie, this one. Acting is quite good, Combs is great and so are several others. The effects were nicely done, but some stuff should have been explained better, imo. Good ending too. Recommended.

I Saw the Devil (2010) - Korean revenge story about a guy attempting to exact revenge on the serial killer who murdered his fiancee. Rather than simply killing the murderer, the grieving man catches, tortures, and releases the perpetrator a few times to attempt to afflict maximum fear and pain upon him. This dynamic is interesting at first but it becomes monotonous about two-thirds of the way through. IStD clocks in at about 140 minutes, so it's more of a marathon than a sprint. The world of IStD is filled with all sorts of unsavory, murderous characters. So much so that it feels like an alternate universe. There are very clear lines drawn between the evil and innocent characters and much blood is spilled on both sides. It doesn't stack up with Chan-wook Park's revenge trilogy, but I still found it enjoyable and worthwhile.

Angel of Death - different nazisploitation, because it is about a group of Jews hunting down nazis in South America. They track down a guy who is, according to them, Dr. Mengele. This guy is a nazi indeed and he wants to create the 4th Reich from South America, but is he really Dr. Mengele? A lot of bad action in this one: the shooting, the sounds and the impacts don't match. Also, people bleed from different places than where they were shot. A lot of corny dialogue too and some really hilarious attempt at drama near the end. Recommended for bad movuefans.

The Boogens - monsters in an abandoned mine, but it takes almost the entire movie before you actually get to see them. When you do it is all nice and bad, the monsters aren't scary at all. Until then, they are sometimes, just because you don't see them. Atmosphere is OK in that part, but still this movie cannot be taken seriously. Nice watch for bad moviefans, though.

did some rewatch.... of some well known movies...

one flew over the cuckoos nest 1973 - still an fantastic movie and well worth the rewatch...
the thing 1982 - this one still hold its own and are atill one of my alltime favorite alien/horror movie..
the goonies 1985 - one of the best movies from the 80s and still worth a watch.

then we have this one...

lost in space 1998 - have not held up good over the years, it was a great movie in 1998. but today it show its age, the plot wasnt the best in 1998 either but at the time the modern cgi was awsome. watching this today in hd/bluray, you will irritate yourself over the outdated cgi and the really really thin uninteresting plot. so this movie is one of the movies i am never going to watch again.

Virtual Desire - erotic thriller about online sexfantasy meetings between two people who don't know each other. One day, the guy who does this kind of stuff, finds his wife dead in their house. Who killed her? Very very thin storyline, the film reminded me a bit of those softporn flicks you could see when commercial TV started to come up in Europe. Lots of tits and naked skin, over and over again. Keep the ffwd button near you! Oh, and if you don't guess the killer, you ought to watch more movies. This one is SO obvious...

Alienator - I thought this would bea bout a spacemonster, but it is about a robot hunting for a space rogue. Funny stuff ensues, unintended I guess. Not really gripping story, but a nice way to pass your time with some mindless blasting and running. Sadly, most of this chase takes place on, you guessed it: earth. Blegh, We know that by now, guys, Come on.
