There is a better rip out now, better than the screener copy.
Serpent's Lair - Jeff Fahey is a real estate salesman and he buys a new house for his wife and himself. After a while, his wife gets suspicious about the black cat which is strolling around the house and when she ends up in the hospital, she wants Jeff to get rid of the cat. He doesn't believe her, and in the meantime a beatiful woman shows up to collect the properties of the previous owner of the house, who killed himself. She starts to seduce Jeff, and this brings all kinds of trouble. Storyline was OK, acting was decent, the behaviour of the woman was kind of extreme imo, but it gives the atmosphere an eerie aspect, so it is OK. Better than I expected, I can recommend this movie. I'll release a rip of it next week.
The Dead Are Alive! - archaeologists are excavating Etruscan graves, and then weird things are happening: people are found dead. Some Etruscan god seems to be resposible, but the archaeologist starts to investigate and he finds out that it is not that simple. Atmospheric movie, kind of long (104 minutes) for what it wants to tell, but it is interesting enough. There are some nice plottwists which keep you entertained, the police comes in on it and starts suspecting different people, nice going. Music is OK, not superspecial or anything. Well, like I said, a tad long, but still good. Recommended! Expect a rip of this one soon, too.

Wake Wood - the cover said "Hammer presents" and that got my hopes up. Not in vain, as it turned out to be a great horror film! A vet and his family move to a village called Wakewood when their daughter is killed by a dog. They get the chance to see her once more for three days, to say goodbye properly. A ritual is performed, but then things go wrong... Great acting, great use of symbolism (the father of the family isn't just a vet, it has a function in the story) and nice storyline. Kept me interesting throughout. Won't spoil anymore, but I thought it was quite scary at times. Highly recommended!
Pengabdi Setan aka Satan's Slave - imdb's storyline says "An Indonesian version of Phantasm". It is Indonesian, allright, but it isn't a version of Phantasm. It is about a guy named Tommy who is very sad because of his mother dying. He wants to contact her and tries to do so through a psychic, but this turns out to be not such a good idea, as the psychic is a minion for satan. Now the psychic becomes the new servant of Tommy's family (coincidence, what). Another servant is killed and Tommy and his sister start to suspect the new maid, while they discover the other servant walking around like a zombie. Their father doesn't believe them, but some other guy does: he tells them they should pray. When the maid is trying to take over everyone, the kids and a crowd start to pray en masse and then the devil's minions burst into flames. Well, it is a weird adaptation of a possession story, there are some ghosts and some zombies. Effects are minimal, acting is rather OK. It is the storyline that makes this movie fun for bad moviefans. Recommended for them only. Expect a rip of this one soon.

i had doubts about Wake Wood - now im gonna watch it, thanks Slayer
Altered (2006) For me it was totally boring. And production, acting imo - not so good. Its movie about monsters, but almost everything is going on in garage... I dont even have nothing else what to say. Not recommended.

(Black Tower) Temptation - the rip I watched is called Black Tower Temptation, but both the imdb page and the titlescreen said Temptation. I think that's the better name, as there isn't any black tower in this movie. There is a club called Temptation, though. Vampiremovie with lots of good looking vampire chicks and they have enough skintime and -action. Storyline kind of OK, it is about a halfbreed who isn't a vampire yet, but she has to choose now: being a vampire or a human. It doesn't get annoying, it has fast enopugh pace and like said before, the ladies will keep you glued to your seat. Nicely done, I had never heard of this directress before, but I'll check out future efforts for sure. Recommended.

Blind Warrior aka Neraka perut bumi - wow, just wow. This is a feast for bad moviefans! It starts out a bit slowly and cliche-like, but after one hour, you get so much fighting with superbad sfx and weird stuff, you'll laugh your ass off! There is a group of ninja-like fighters and they start fighting the minions of the bad guy. They fly, kick, hit and swing their swords. Some time into the fight, you hear a gunshot. So they had firearms all along! Why the hassle with the kung fu and the swords then? There are some priceless superfake decapitations in which you can see the guy, hiding in his suit to make it look like he is decapitated, walking around like a headless chicken while a minimal amount of fake blood squirts into the air. Some bad guys fall over even before they get hit (you might remember this from Xena, Warrior Princess), and the plastic swords don't inflict any wounds when hit on the opponent's chest. All in all, a great ride if you like bad movies. I laughed out loud for a while. Warning: you might experience a shortage of oxygen after watching this. Highly recommended for bad moviefans, a must see. Expect a rip of this in a few weeks.
Husk - reviews I read ranged from "nice to see a fresh and new take on horror", to "it is yet another rural horror which has been done over and over again". It isn't such a new take on horror, but it isn't a boring film either. Yes, it is not very original, but it was quite OK. I even got scared one time. The storyline goes the way you expect it to go, but there is enough (good) gore and some freaky moments. So no surprises, but enjoyable nonetheless. Mildly recommended.

Not a movie, actually, but a documentary related to horror:
Cropsey - an urban legend about a guy living in an abandoned mental institution and grabbing kids to eat them, is so mixed into the culture of youth growing up in Staten Island, that some documentary makers want to investigate about it. Soon they stumble upon stuff which isn't urban legend anymore. It is real. It ends up being a documentary about a case, where they leave you in doubt or almost the entire time. You can swing both ways watching this, thinking it is true or not. In the end they have delivered enough evidence to choose, but the build up to it is done very well. Warning: as it is all real, this might shock some people, especially emotionally. There is not so much as gore in it, but it can be emotionally demanding. Highly recommended, I really hope these guys are gonna make more documentaries.

BMX Bandits - this is a kids movie and it shows. The colours are candylike and they make your enamel explode, as bright as they are in this film. Also, the criminals are really, really dumb and they continue to do dumb stuff throughout the film. The heroes are kids on their BMX bikes and their weapons are flour. It is all so sweet and innocent, and mixed with an Australian accent and some childish jokes: BMX Bandits movie. This is not a film to be taken seriously, it is for kids or for sad moments in which you need a simple cheer up.
F - wow, what a contrast! Where BMX Bandits was sweet and innocent, F was grim and gloomy. It is about a school which gets attacked. You don't get to see the faces of the attackers, you don't know who they are. You know the victims, yes, but that's all. The first killing is outside but is of such cruelty that you know that this film is not gonna be an easy watch. After this one, the attackers go inside and start following the victims and kill them. People who coincidentally (or not so coincidentally) wander into the building are killed off like the rest. There is a subplot about a teacher who teaches his daughter, but they have a fight and now she wants to go away with her boyfriend. Of course in the beginning nobody believes the teacher when he says everyone is in danger. When they do, it is almost always too late. I liked this film, but it ends in a stupid way. It has an open ending, and while I usually can live with open endings (they are better than closed ones, often), this one just felt unfinished. I wanted to know more, what happened to person X who was still in the building, what happened to person Y who got transported to the hospital? Do they arrive, does person Y survive? What does person Z, who transports person Y to the hospital experience afterwards? (X, Y, Z to avoid spoilers) Too many questions imo and therefore a good film which ends unfinished. Shame. Recommended, for the first 65 minutes.

Wake Wood - It was Slayers review that led me to see this one. Pretty good, I must say. The thing I enjoyed the most was the fact that was different, when I saw the couple entering a new town, I thought to myself: "Ok, been there, done that: the population has a secret, they're all evil a cult, demons or some shit like that". I was wrong. Even if it has some of those elements, the film manages to present something new, and that's really good right?

It is nice to see the recommendations actually bear fruit at times Ladyhawke - fantasyfilm which actually was quite good. It surprised me, because I have seen so many fantasy crap and other fabtasy which didn't interest me, but this one was quite OK. Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Broderick star in this adventurous story about an evil bishop who cursed some people way back when and now a former captain of the guard is coming back to Aquila to settle the score. Very nice wideshots of the landscape, good storyline and good acting makes this enjoyable even for a person like me who isn't a big fantasy fan. I watched it because I was expecting another bad movie with laughable effects, but it wasn't. And still I had a good time. Recommended.

About F
Shit, somehow i didnt felt this open-ending so open. I kinda found it simplier. Everybody, who stayed in school - died. And only way to escape this - only with losses; so you kind off actually can't escape it. If that terror, that cruelty touches you - you cant run out without scars. You loose at least some part of you, some part of what you were before it.

OK, I can relate to that, but still it felt more like an unfinished film to me. Like I posted, I'd have loved to see how it would have gone on with several of the characters in the film. But I understand your point of view and I can relate. Macabria wrote: | btw, yeah Slayer, your recommendations are very welcome and theres really people, who read them |
I didn't have any doubts about people reading them (and even if I would have - I use it as a personal catalogue, so for me it is always useful), but to see that people are gonna watch films because I write a positive review about them and then post here that they indeed liked it, is very nice It also works the other way around: I watched F because of your review.

Silent Bloodnight - I mistook this for Bloodnight when I bought it 2nd hand, so I watched it to see if it was a total misfit or not. After a few minutes in, I couldn't believe my ears. Yes, my ears. This movie is made in Austria, with almost all actors being Austrians who are speaking English. And this results in hilarious accents, THROUGHOUT the entire film! Apart from this, there are some serious cases of overacting, it reminded me of The Room. By just looking at the storyline, one can see that it isn't all bad/amateuristic. The storyline makes sense, although it is very obvious who the killer is from about 15 minutes in max. The killings are pretty bloody, which is a good thing of course. I had a fun time watching it, but that was mostly because of the accents and the acting. So if you wanna have a laugh, watch this one. It is not scary or anything.
Escape from Hell - an Italian WIP movie adopted by Troma. It has everything you would expect from an Italian exploitation flick: fighting women, sexual abuse, alcoholics, etc. The doctor of the prison is the human face of the regime and he protests to the brutal force the warden is applying. There isn't a lot of typical Troma stuff to see in this film, it is very comparable with other Italian exploitation flicks from the 70s/80s. Nothing really special about this one, but it is a good exploitation watch.
Horizonica - 1236 volunteers make a movie together! it says on the cover. This is a cool thing to remember from time to time while watching this film, because at times you might think "great stuff, especially for volunteers". It isn't the best horror ever, but for a zombieflick it is quite cool. Dutch people also tend to say that "it is OK for a Dutch movie", as if Dutch movies are a special category, totally incomparable to international films. This film won't hold up internationally because it is Dutch spoken, but comparing this to many many other zombie flicks I have seen, this isn't the worst at all. It is somewhere in the middle, and I think that is pretty good. Storyline isn't the best, effects are sometimes great, sometimes a bit amateuristic and fake looking. Acting depends a bit on who is acting. Antonie Kamerling for example blows away most of the other people in the film. The ending wasn't really cool, imo, but overall it is enjoyable enough. I'd recommend this if there were any English subs. One note on the running time: when the disc says 109 minutes, bear in mind that that is including almost 13 minutes of end credits (that's what you get with 1236 volunteers, I guess) and an extra scene of 2 minutes after that.

VAMPIRE GIRL VS. FRANKENSTEIN GIRL [2009]
Gore bullshit comedy. Thats how u could call it. I didnt really followed the story very accurate, it has some love triangle in it, black girls clan, Kwasimodo, few really funny (cause so crappy) jokes, body interruptings etc. Theres not just some Mortal Combat between two girls. Btw, vampire girl is kinda like that guy from Prototype game, she can put out from her wrists some bone-saw-swords.

Blooded - a thriller about an internet viral: animal rights activists kidnap a group of hunters and hunt them down. They film it and put it on the internet. This film is made in documentary style which gives it a great feeling of reality, with interviews and "cam footage" edited into the "dramatic reenactment" of the events. Cool way to make a movie. The climax is a bit anti-climactic, but overall it is nice to see a movie made differently. Recommended. Hellborn - a young medicine student starts working at an asylum for the criminally insane to kickstart his career. After a (very) short while he picks up messages from the inmates about the evilness of the asylum. When he is investigating, he finds out what has been happening all the time in the asylum. It is pretty much a long line of cliches, this movie. There is something satanic going on, so guess how many of the people in this film are involved in it: right, almost all of them. The demonic monster looks kind of cool, but is actually only a gimmick. It doesn't add much to the storyline. In the end the protagonist goes mad: how surprising. I could go on, but I won't. You can easily skip this one. Body Count - a Ruggero Deodato film with some pretty well known actors such as David Hess and Charles Napier. A group of young people are camping out and get stalked and killed by something/someone. A subplot about the camping owner's wife and the affair she has with the sheriff plays out simultaneously. It is a pretty straughtforward movie, without anything complicated: killer kills victim, others find it, they get scared, killer kills next victim. Etc, etc. Not much gore, but the atmosphere in which the killings take place is very cold. I didn't guess the killer, but that wasn't 100% because it was too difficult Not really recommended, but also not so bad you shouldn't watch it.

Pelt - listed as a horror/comedy, I didn't find myself laughin out loud on the couch. Actually, this wasn't so funny. There are some jokes, and some (a very small amount) are OK, the rest is of the kind of "laugh or I kill you" jokes. A shitload of cliches passes the screen, from the teenagers who end up in the woods to the local who warns them about not trespassing there to the rural killer who starts killing them off one by one. Positive stuff: some nice looking chicks and one of them plays a nymphomaniac character. She gives the male viewer some moments to remember. But that's it. As a horror/comedy avoid it, as it isn't funny. As yet another horror movie with a killer in the woods picking of teens ne by one, this isn't totally bad, but also quite forgettable.
The Viking Queen - this one was a lot less bad than I had thought. It plays out in Bittannica, in the days of the Roman Empire. It is an opera-like story: a young woman gets chosen to be her father's successor and thus be the queen of her people. She wants to cooperate with the Romans, whose governor is a wise, young and single man. They fall in love, but others have plans for the province of Brittannica and want to put their agenda forward, pitting the queen and the Roman governor against each other. Like I said, I had expected a bad movie along the lines of Barbarian Queen or something like that. It wasn't. It isn't a historical drama either, but a nice watch anyway. Major drawback was that audio was out of sync by over a second, so you could hear events coming while not seeing them yet. Pretty annoying. Film: recommended. Rip: make sure you put audio in sync first.
Hobo with a Shotgun - Rutger Hauer is some sort of national film hero overhere, so when he makes a movie, it is almost always in the news. This film is also the opening film on a film festival in Amsterdam where he is going to receive a Career Achievement Award. The poster promises us an oldschool revenge film with, you guessed it, a hobo with a shotgun. A city is being run by a criminal with two psychos as sons, and he himself isn't so sane either. When the hobo is in a shop during a stick up, he buys a shotgun and makes it his quest to eradicate the psycho criminals. This goes with a lot of bang and there are some real funny ones among them. Atmosphere is OK, a bit tense, but nothing serious. I really enjoyed this one. And I love Rutger Hauer too. Recommended.
