Four of the Apocalypse - a western by Fulci. My wife is into western, but of course the companies want sales, so they put on the backside of the DVD that it was a very bloody and gory western with gruesome torture "from the godfather of gore" and then she didn't want to see it anymore. It was all cry wolf, like I expected. Yes, there is a woman who gets raped but you don't see it. Yes, there is a torture scene (it was cut from all previous English releases) and it was kind of gruesome too, but that was only one scene. All the rest was western like you might know it. Fabio Testi stars once more as the lead in a Fulci film, he heads a group of four and then they encounter a bandit. The sptyr is not super intersting, but good enough and I enjoyed watching this. Actually I don't get it that Fucli is called the godfather of gore. Only a few of his movies have gore in more than one scene, and this one isn't one of them. Recommended mildly, as there are better westerns.

Nosferatu (the vampyre) - the 70s Herzog version. It is closer to the Dracula story than some Dracula films, and it has a starcast with Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani and Bruno Ganz. Also, there are some familiar filming locations for me, as they have been filming in both Schiedam and in Delft, two towns in Holland I know pretty well. It was nice to see them on the big screen :) A drawback of it was that I couldn't be immersed so mich into the story, as the story isn't supposed to play out in Holland, but that's only minor. Long drawn out scenes where imagery counts are a trademark of this film and you need to take the time for it. It can be a bit dragging smetimes, but it gives the film it's fairytale-like mood. The vampire looks dumb, imo, but that goes for the original Nosferatu as well. All in all nice take on the story, recommended.

just finished watching "the dead pit" (1989) and the classic (in my eyes) Lifeforce , yup been a boring sunday, so i drunk some wine and watched some classics - "The dead pit" :- very bad movie, but was very enjoyable, had some awfull acting but actually helped the movie and then "Lifeforce", watched this movie back when i was like 12 the same day i watched rawhead rex, still love it, alot of boobs, cool twists on Vampires, terrible acting from Patrick Stewart, it is and will always be amongst the movies that rocks my shit...

I hate sundays :matrix:

War of the Worlds - the 1952 version, so only flying "saucers" in this one. Quite a good movie, especially for it's time. I'm not an expert on the story, so I'm not gonna point out what is right and what is wrong with this version. I heard something about large bipod monsters or something. Well, in this one we see something hitting earth and then aliens in their flying machines come out of it. They are not so friendly and blast away at everything they detect. The flying stuff has several threads/wires visible ;) but I guess it is still pretty impressive for 50s sfx. Nice story, enjoyable watch, but the ending is pretty dumb and sudden imo. Recommended, especially if you are interested in early sfx.

Rage of the Werewolf - wow, this was bad. Bad in the way you notice it that the actors know they are acting, bad in the way the dialogue is read slowly from cardboards held up behind the camera, bad in the way you think "uggh, what an ugly mask" when the monster enters the screen. The first 20-30 minutes you have to sit thorugh: they are quite boring, but after that it becomes cheesier every scene. This is where the lolfest starts. Apart from this feast for bad moviefans there is Debbie Rochon as a vampire (a vampire? I thought this was a werewolf movie! Yes, well...) for the B-moviefans. Recommended, if not highly, for bad moviefans. Warning: my DVD had totally crappy sound, with a lot of crackling, distortion and large volume differences. So if you can, don't buy the R0 with Dutch (hardcoded) subs.

Themenight: "3". Three films and they are all a part 3 in a series.

Phantasm III - I don't get the feeling I;m watching sequels when I watch Phantasm. They are all pretty good. Of course the novelty is gone, but still the spheres scare me a bit and there is a new twist everytime. I liked the twist in this one, where one sphere chooses the side of Reggie and Mike and fights the Tall Man. I like the way the grand theme is unraveled bit by bit too: it is like watching a series with 4 episodes. The only thing I don't like is the obvious one: the Tall Man got killed pretty good in part 2 and now he is back anyway. Meh. But only a small meh. Recommended!

Child's Play 3 - maybe you read that I wrote that I had some images of Chucky in my memory and I think they are from this one. My brain gave a sort of a recognition signal when Chucky was strangling his first victim in this film. Same drawback as in Phantasm III, but overall a pretty nice film where Andy is now a young man and is being educated in a military highschool. Chucky thinks of some pretty sick stuff and instead of killing all by himself, he lets other people do some of the killing too now. Nice move! I think I had the most fun with this one so far. It is the most provocative one, the first two still have something "nice" over them. This one doesn't. Recommended.

The Prophecy 3: the ascent - in this one, Gabriel has turned good. He is now looking like a bum (actually he reminded me of Rutger Hauer in Hobo with a Shotgun) and protecting Danyael, a nephilim, from the wrath of some bad angels. Loads and loads of incredible stuff passes by once more and the budget is shrinking, as there are less and less angels to see on the screen. This is obviously the last one Walken had to do according to his contract, his screentime is declining too. This was more obviously a sequel than the other two above. Not so good.

Masters of the Universe - it is pretty rare that I really want to see a specific film, but tonight I really wanted to see this one. I tried to recollect the He-Man dolls which I played with in my childhood and everything, but in my memory there were way more characters in the dolls than in this film. It is funny to see Dolph Lundgren play He-Man as it is funny to see Courtney Cox at such a young age. The storyline, in many fantasy movies quite simple, is a tad bit more elaborated than usually. Nice touch. It has cuteness written all over it, the "grim" stuff not being really grim at all. Recommended, if only for nostalgia.

The Werewolf Shadow - the third werewolf flick with Paul Naschy I have seen. He is just so very classic, a film with him is almost an instant success in my book ;) There are several languages spoken in this film, I guess it was the same on set. It is truly a European film, as we can hear English, French, German and Spanish being spoken. Thew story was quite OK, the vampire thing was a bit unneeded for me, a werewolf in itself is enough, right? But they make something nice out of it and the girl who gets to be a a vampire is pretty hot. Recommended.

Motor Psycho - this Meyer film is a bit different: there is a storyline and violence is the theme here, not boobs per se. It reminded me a bit of Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!, although that one impressed me more. It is not a surprsing connection I made there, as they are both from 1965 and they both feature Haji ;) Entertaining enough, this is one of the better Meyer films for me. Recommended, maybe mildly.

Vampire Sisters - this is some sort of a kinky softporn movie. The sisters have a website to lure in well paying customers, whom are bitten after they have experienced their sexual fantasies with the sisters. Afterwards they are fed to a monster in a closet. The sisters are all low budget actresses with very few films on their filmography: Darla Albornoz (I thought I recognised here from another film, but I guess I was wrong), Jeannie Michelle Jameson (this is her only film) and the plastically enhanced Syn Devil. Actually the film starts to become less interesting when the kinky softporn part is over. The storyline doesn't hold well and makes this slide back into the B-movie bin. Only for bad moviefans.

Cat's Eye - nice Stephen King anthology, with three stories. The first one is about James Woods who wants to quit smoking and becomes a customer of Quitters Inc, a company which has some drastic measurements to let people stay off the cigarettes. This story was going on nicely and then it ended quite abruptly. It felt really unfinished. Not good. The second story is about a mafioso who is gonna kidnap the guy who sleeps with his wife and then play a bit with him, making a bet about walking on a ledge on a very tall building. This one was quite classic,. but that also made it very predictable. Good enough, though. The last story was about a young girl (Drew Barrymore, in one of her first roles after ET) who got menaced by a troll which lived in her bedroom wall. Her parents, especially her mother, have trouble believing her and they blame the stray cat that wandered in recently. Sadly, this cat is actually trying to save the child... Nice effects, the troll looked cool. Not the best anthology I have seen and I know King can do better, especially better than the smoke quitters story.

Men Behind the Sun 3 - this third part in the Japanese shock/exploitation quadrilogy is the least shovcking I have seen until now. It is more a war/drama film than anything else. The most shocking stuff is in flashbacks, and they are mostly from parts 1 and 2, so not much new stuff is filmed. Of this shocking stuff, the majority is massacres by shooting down POWs and gassing them. The storyline is slow paced and not really interesting, as the sub-title
Spoiler:
"A Narrow Escape"
is a huge spoiler. So at film's start you know how it is gonna end, not so good. I hope part 4 is a bit more grim, so these films won't go down in a spiral.

Gothic - in this film, the horror is in the imagination of the people we see. They are Lord Byron, Shiloh and Mary Shelley, Claire Clairmont and Dr. Polidori. They take laudanum, they dream and see things. This, however, takes a while. First you are looking at a costume drama, where Mary has a hard time ollowing what Shiloh and Byron are doing, but in the second half of the film you get to see a trippy experience of several of the guests and of Byron himself. Weird film, but it is fun to check out the things which made her write Frankenstein for sure.

The Living Dead Girl - not a vampire, not a zombie, but undead nonetheless. This is the living dead girl. When she returns to her sister, whom she was very very close to when she was still alive, this sister is gonna help her. But she needs blood to stay "alive", so the sister is gonna look for humans her dead sister can live on. Actually, the living dead girl just wants to die properly and she is getting sick of herself having to take all that blood. More gore than usually in a Rollin film and I could follow the storyline rather easily. Seeing that this is one of his later films, it just might be that Rollin got the hang of it a bit later in his career. I'm looking forward to Grapes of Wrath now. Recommended.

The Mutilation Man - this film is about nothing. At least, I couldn't make anything out of it. There is a story on the backside of the DVD and that is all you get. The film doesn't contain more, it is just a very long drawn series of images, very colourful and sometimes disturbing, but it is not a story. The main character is a guy with a troubled childhood and he mutilates himself to earn money. Well, that's it. Very weird experience to see this, but I cannot recommend this to anyone, as it is so supervague.

Candyman - totally different, this one. An almost classic film in the way it sets up atmosphere, builds character and then develops the story. Cool thing the killer comes to the person trying to prove his non-existence. Nice touch, scriptwriter! Some things are pretty predictable, like the fact
Spoiler:
that the professor is sleeping with one of his students behind his wife's back
but the way the filmmakers portray the downfall of the main character is quite something, almost like Kafka. The ending is nice too. Highly recommended!

Have to quote an IMDb review for this:

"Never before have I seen a film that left me feeling so ashamed and dirty."

Nice quote. I recognise it, but I think of other films when I read that. I can't call Mutilation Man a film, really.

I Bury The Living - a guy is gonna work as chairman of a cemetery and he has a map of all patches available on the cemtery in his office. In every patch there is a pin, a white one for living persons (they bought the patch for when they die) and black for already deceased persons. When the guy accidentally changes some pins to black, he discovers that those persons die in real life. He is gonna investigate, and tries to find help with the police but they don't believe him. Classic film with not so much scares, only in the final part. There is a tiny bit of a creepy feeling all over the film, but it is kind of tame too, as you might expect from a '50s film. The ending is cool, I liked that a lot, although I had to guess a little bit: my DVD is missing the sound in the last 15 minutes.

Mother's Day - rape revenge film, but a bit different. Three students travel in the woods and they encounter this distorted family of one elderly woman and two retarded sons. They have their way with the students, but they are gonna get it later. I won't spoil anything, but I liked this one because it is a bit different. I have seen many films with dysfunctional families murdering away and doing crazy stuff, but this one is quite original. For instance, they are gonna play several sketches and give their victim a role in it. Weird. Also, the way it develops and the way it ends is totally different from other films in this subgenre. Recommended.

From Within - ghost story about a very very very christian town where suddenly people start to die. It looks like they are all suicides. What is going on? I had a hard time sympathising with the characters, as they are so extremely christian. In one scene there is a lot of emotion and drama between the main characters (boy and girl) and I just didn't feel anything for them. It's not that the actors are not delivering, acting was quite good. But pretty often I thoguht about how boring the movie was and that I wanted to check some stuff on the internet instead. The ghost appearances are OK-ish, but not really scary. I'm really happy I buight this second hand for almost nothing. Now I can forget about it.

Vampire in Vegas - yay, Tony Todd! I like that guy, and in this film he is a influential vampire with ties to humans. He is gonna run for governor and in the meantime he is working on a serum with which he can walk in the daylight (well, actually some big breasted blondine is working on the serum for him). I love it how this film doesn't take itself seriously. Every woman in a serious function (I already mentioned the scientst, but there is also the cop and some others) wears a push up bra, the guy leading the police investigation gets wise-assed by people who he is suspecting, the bachelor party is in a club called Devil's Dawn which is some sort of 2nd grade Titty Twister, etc. There are two storylines crossing each other in Devil's Dawn, not really original, but nicely done. OI just went on imdb to check out the name of the club (I didn't find it btw), but really, none of the reviews there are OK. Four of them are totally bashing this film and everything in it, while missing the tongue-in-cheek appearance of the filmmakers for 110% and the other one is praising it like it is the new OScarwinner of all times. Both sides are wrong. I recommend this one!

Living Hell - nice and simple monsterflick. A military lab gets torn down, but then the army gets a warning about something in a vault. When they find it, it turns out be an infected man. The infection spreads rapidly in the form of large tentacles which slide across the countryside, devouring anything in their way. Now the army must stop it, but the guy who warned them knows better. While he tries to help, the army sees him as subversive and want to arrest him. Actually, this story is not so bad, but the cgi is a bit too present and there are a bit too many cliches used in this film. The plot twists are nice, but not anything you haven't seen before. Simple and straightforward, if that is what you are looking for, then watch this one.

Witchcraft - ahem, a bad film. The story is like this: a couple got accused of witchcraft in 1687 and they were burnt at the stake, while the woman was pregnant. Now, 300 years later, they are back (how? why? nobody is gonna explain!) and they want their child. They pose as a mother and her son and will stop at nothing to get what they want. What sytarts then, is a very weak rip-off of Rosemary's Baby. From the first minute you will know what is gonna happen and that makes this film very boring. Apart from that, the main female character (Grace) acts like she just entered acting class. The 85 minutes runtime is an odyssey. Avoid.

Shatter Dead - another bad film, it was not my night. Zombies and people live together in this film, because dying as become impossible (how? why? nobody is gonna explain!). According to the backside of the DVD it has something to do with an angel and now there is a war going on between zombies and humans. The only stuff you see connected to the angel are some hallucinogenic images with an angel in it, they totally didn't make sens to me. What you see about the "war" is zombies attacking people, hmmm, where did I see that before? An alltime low is the scene where the female main character (an ugly and depressing looking woman who is deemed pretty by the guy with long hair) has sex with a dead guy who isn't really dead and instead of pleasuring him she ties his handgun around his thigh and blows that. Wow, what a nuisance, this film. Avoid!

The Haunting in Connecticut - after yesterday I needed some good movies. This is one. Nice buildup of the storyline, and although I read that most of it is NOT based on true events, it is a good story. And that is what matters when I'm watching a film. It is also quite original to make a terminally ill guy the portal between the world of the living and that of the dead. Other than that, the ghost stuff is well done, it is a bit like the Ring in the aspect that the ghosts just want peace and they need to get out of limbo for that. Nice imagery, nice use of cgi for once, and decent acting. Drawbacks are that the scene you can see on the DVD cover (the ghost boy Jonah hanging on the ceiling) above the family who bought the house, is not anywhere in the film. That just sucks. What is even worse is that the ending is quite meh. It is an "all well ends well" and it doesnt fit the story. It would have been way better if
Spoiler:
the terminally ill boy hadn't made it
Still, a fine film. Recommended.

Ginger Snaps Back: the beginning - aka Ginger Snaps 3. It had been a while (some 7 years) since I had seen Ginger Snaps 1 and 2. I liked both movies since they had good stories and there was some originality in the theme and setting. In this one, the setting is more gothic/classic, as it plays out in 1815 in an American fort in the middle of nowhere. I still love Katherine Isabelle! Some of the wolves look odd, but most of the time this is an OK film. If it wasn't a Ginger Snaps, I still would have liked it, which is a good thing. Even if you haven't seen the other films, you can enjoy this one. Recommended.

Scream 4 (2011): My two cent on this movie will be longer since I consider this a bit of "personal". That is because it is directed by Wes Craven the director of my all time favorite horror movie "A Nightmare on Elm Street". I had no expectation on this movie. Well, let's be honest: I did. I was expecting it to be total horse shit. After watching it I really have mixed feelings about it. While it wasn't that terrible, I still didn't really like it. At the beginning it felt like an advertisement for Apple's IPhone, Twitter and Facebook. The story tries to add these gadgets to the story and be original. It's not surprising that the story lacks any originality. It was just played too ofter. Another person wearing the same mask killing people. Duh. Moreover I couldn't decide if I was watching a horror movie or a comedy. It tries too hard to be both and fails with all its stupid jokes. It just didn't feel right. This for me is clearly the weakest episode in the franchise so far. I would compare it to the Freddy sequels. They became more and more funny and in the end weren't scary enough in the end. Looks like the same thing is happening here. I would not recommend this movie to anyone. Stick with the first. That was an original and scary horror movie.

PS: I don't have an IPhone. I am not using Facebook nor Twitter. :moon:
