Rosewood Lane - Rose McGowan is Sonny, a psychologist who does a radioshow every night. She returns to the house where she had a troubled childhood with an alcholic father, after that father has died. Soon she discovers there is something odd about the newspaperboy, and she also finds out stuff has been moved in her house while she was away for work. She wants to get to the bottom of it, and gets some help from an old friend and a colleague, but the neighbours aren't so eager to help out. Funny thing about this film is that the street actually exists in NY, the not so funny things are that it really doesn't get going. The film drags and drags and then when something interesting is happening, the film is over immediately after.

Massacre - very late Italian giallo (1989), but it still is quite OK. It is not as good as some of the genre's top pieces, but if you have seen all those, it is not a bad choice to pick this one for a change of pace with today's slasher flicks. Some of the scenes in this film were later used by Lucio Fulci to spice up Nightmare Concert/Un Gatto Nel Cervello. This "borrowing" of scenes was commonplkace in Italian cinema in the 60s and 70s, but it is quite odd to see it happen this "late". I didn't guess the killer, but this time it wasn't because I didn't pay attention, it was because it was really illogical. As it should be, in a giallo ;) If you want a good giallo, skip this one, but if you like Italian cinema over all, you can easily pick this one.

Bite Marks - two gay guys hitchhike with a trucker, but at a trucker's stop they encounter vampires. Now they have to survive until morning, not an easy task when you are with three guys in a cabin and outside the vampires roam. This film tried to be funny and succeeded from time to time, but it could have been better still. Aklso, there were some lame continuity goofs, like when they are in the cabin, the scream to a guy outside to warn him for a vampire. The guy doesn't hear them. Later, they think of honking the horn to make the vampires afraid. Ah, so the horn appeared in the meantime? :wacky: Some nice references to other horror films, both zombie and vampire films. OK, but nothing really special, so not really recommended.

Nazis at the Center of the Earth - wow, this was a surprise by Asylum! Most of the time their movies suvck and the only fun I have is looking out for the spoofs in them. This time I had great fun with the flick itself, although the cgi was below par again (but better than in most Syfy films) and there were numerous mistakes. But hey, it is still Asylum. I had great fun with the nazis, who actually spoke German btw (although it was with heavy English accents, with a few exceptions). They start out with destroying an oncoming US army, and Dr Mengele singlehandedly kills GI's at a distance with his Luger, and a tank with his Panzerfaust (from a distance which is impossible irl, but who cares). Then after a while we get to see their base and I must say, that was pretty cool. I won't spoil more, because it will make the movie less fun, but there is a real nice surprise coming out of that base after some 50 minutes! Highly recommended for bad moviefans!

Attack of the Herbals - in a Scottish village, Jackson returns after having been away for years. He finds out that a developer is about to take over the entire village, and Jackson's grandpa is the only one not willing to sell his plot. When Jackson and his old buddy Russell find a crate with mysterious crumbs in it, they sell those crumbs as herbal tea. The tea is very addictive, and almost the entire village is hooked. Since Jackson is now making money, his grandpa has a good reason not to sell to the developer. However, it turns out that the tea also makes the villagers go on a killing spree. Now Jackson has to save himself and his friends before it's too late. OK film, quite funny at times. Acting isn't so good, but considering it is the first film for almost the entire cast, I think that's forgiveable.

Sister Emanuelle - nice Italian nunsploitation mixed with Emanuelle theme. Emanuelle has become a nun to avoid the "sinful life" she has had up to that point. All goes well until she has to babysit Monica, a girl who has been put in her monastery to learn some "christian values". This Monica is very debauched, and Emanuelle finds out she has trouble resisting the new sensual pleasures coming across her path. Corny music, beatiful landscapes, crappy dubbing, nice camerashots, everything typical Italian is there. I love Italian cinema, so I also enjoyed this film, although the story is somewhat lame. If you like Italian films too, or are a fan of nunsploitation, then this is for you.

Parasitic - low budget flick and like in Attack of the Herbals, most of the cast are doing their first acting job in this flick. Some models from soft rotic stuff are recruited for acting in this film, and Bianca Holland is the "lead". This busty woman is a bar owner who locks up the club late at night, just to get infested with an alien. She starts infesting others, who turn into some sort of zombies. There is a lot of talking going on between the not infested people, and sometimes that gets a bit lame (especially when a guy asks a girl if she has a phone and she says she hasn't - the guy goes and does some rounds in the building and when he comes back, he asks the same question to the same girl :wacky: ). The creatures however are very cool, they are mechanical and not cgi, so I had great fun watching this film simply because I love those old fashioned monsters! The rest of the film is quite forgettable, but since it is not so very long (78 minutes), you might give it a chance.

Vacancy (2007): A soon to be divorced couple are on the way home from a party. Their car breaks down and they have to stay at a motel. The husband plays back a video tape he finds in their room. It turns out to be a snuff film and ... the room in the movie looks very much like the one they are in now ... This one was better than expected. Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson star in this psycho thriller. Recommended.

Yeah, Vacancy rocks. :)

I went visiting some old friends yesterday and we used to watch films at my house until late at night, but since I got this toddler now, my house isn't so suitable for such evenings anymore, so we shifted it to a different guy's home. I still supply the movies mostly, though ;)

Osombie - Osama bin Laden turns into a zombie, and now a NATO unit must seek him out and destroy him for good. The opening of the film is promising, as they spoof Osama's death and "burial" in a cool way. After a while, in which the unit shot a lot of zombies and lost a few men to them too, it gets a bit boring, though. The soldiers keep walking through the desert, they meet some people, they shoot some zombies, and there is this Colin Farell lookalike who keeps walking around without a T-shirt. I admit, they joke about that too at some point. But overall, this was meant to be a comedy and a lot of jokes fell flat, at least for me. There was some good and a lot of lame cgi to top it off. We had fun doing some MST3K shit on this film, though :)

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter - this was actually quite good. A lot of cgi again, but most of it was good this time, the horse scene is impressive, but also a bit over the top, the fighting was almost like The Matrix. According to this movie, the Civil War was between the North, consisting of human soldiers and led by Lincoln, and the South, consisting of vampires and led by a British vampire. It is more an adventure than a horror film, the vampires never really get scary. The story is a bit predictable, for example the train-thing was something which I could see coming from miles away. There are some funny jokes, especially if you know the history around Lincoln and the Civil War. Nice and enjoyable, so I canr ecommend this one.

Robot Holocaust - the final film we watched with the group (although one already went to sleep and two others were leaving during this one), and it was the coolest one, imo. A very bad 80s scifi, with some robot lord called The Dark One, a Dr. Zoidberg lookalike robot called Torc, and an overacting German actress, dramatically pronouncing all her sentences like she was reading it from an autocue. Classic bad sfx, and an illogical story. Superb, we laughed a lot, this is a total recommendation for bad moviefans!

Rites Of Spring - two plots come together in several ways. One is about kidnapping a girl to get a fat ransom from her wealthy father, the other is about two girls who get assaulted and finds themselves tied up in a barn next to a desolate farm. On the farm there is a weird creature who wants to have girls be brought to him periodically, and a small group of weirdos making sure this happens in time. This plot has similarities to TCM. Although the idea is nice, I thought it became clear too early in the film that these two stories would meet. The "TCM" plot has some gore, the other plot has a nice twist. The ending was cliche and a bit of a letdwon, as this could have been so much better. So, not too bad, but a missied opportunity anyway.

The Day - a desaturated film about a post apocalyptic world where 5 people need to find a place to stay for a while, because one of them got sick and the outside world is quite hostile. They find a house, but they get trapped in there and when the "owners" show up, it becomes a fight for survival. Some OK acting, some nice actionscenes and some nice twists in the storyline, but overall this film left me wanting. I felt like this film wasn't complete somehow. The storyline has an ending of course, but still... a tad lacking imo. Cool fighter chick, though.

Some Guy Who Kills People - tragicomedy with some horror elements. Ken got picked on in highschool, and after having been inside a madhouse for some years, he tries to pick up his life. Not an easy task, since he still lives with his mom at 34 and works at an icecream parlor. For this job, he has to do promotional work in an icecream suit and he meets some of the guys who picked on him this way. Soon after they are dead. Murdered. He also meets a little girl who turns out to be his daughter. She wants to spend time with him, and moves in with him and her grandma. Ken however, has a hard time adjusting. Also, what about the murders? Pretty funny at times, and also a tad moving (damn you, paternal hormones!), ythis is almost no horror, so if you look for a lot of gore or supernatural stuff, go elsewhere. If you want to have a nice time with a few good kills thrown in, then pick this one.

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us - mmm, yeah. Not bad, this werewolf film. But the thing is: we have all seen this before. Old village, atmospheric and all, gets terrorised by a werewolf. There is a young couple in love, and the girl gets hit on by one of the werewolf hunters who have come to the vilage to get the reward for killing the beast. The werewolf action is nothing special, the way the hunters treat the wolf is kind of dumb. The person who turns out to be the werewolf is also very cliche. Actually, this might be only good if you have never seen a werewolf movie before. Or if you are a huge fan of the subgenre of course.

The Entity - a woman gets assaulted and raped by an invisible person. Confused she seeks help with a psychologist, but when it turns out he doesn't have the solution, she turns to parapsychologists. They help her track down the entity, and then they try to lure it into a testhouse they built, in order to kill it. Got this one because it was tipped by a friend, he had seen this one and found it real scary. Although I realy liked the atmosphere (80s, eh?), I wasn't scared. There was one moment which was very cool, but all others I saw coming from miles away. Acting is great, I especially liked the way the psychologist from the beginning turns from a cold professional into a guy who almost stalks the woman. Some effects were giving it away a tad too much (the naked body of the woman was clearly a rubber one), but overall this movie was quit good, Not really scary, but a good film anyway. The best part is the first 100 minutes or so, after that it becomes a tad less interesting. I can still safely recommend this one.

V-H-S - anthology with 5 shorts. The wraparound story is about a few young criminals who get a paid job to steal a certain VHS tape. When they enter the house, they find loads of VHS tapes, and a dead body. Now they have to check out the tapes to see which is th one they need to steal. This way we get to see five shorts (5 of the tapes they watch). Although this wraparound story is nicely made up, it is (very) poorly executed. The youngsters are deeply annoying and the imagequality is bad (on purpose). Then the five stories: they all have some twist in the, but in the first one I could see it coming from almost the beginning, in the secoind one I was actually surprised but apart from the twist the story was quite dull and the third story didn't really have a twist. The fourth story was the best in creeping me out: the skype conversation turned gross zt a certain point and it was quite trealistic, imo. Also, the twist was nicely done in this one. The fifth story was also pretty good, the acting was nice, but the twist was pretty predictable. Some OK effects, but also many annoying "VHS" effects. To kill two hours, this is an option, but it is not the masterpiece some sites have led me to believe. But, as a "found footage" disliker, I had some fun, so that's a plus from me.

Alla Ricerca Del Piacere - nice giallo fom 1972 starring Barbara Bouchet, one of the sexiest giallo women. She plays a woman looking for her missingh friend and therefore taking up a secretary job at the house she was last seen alive. Strong points are (beside Barbara) the music and the setting (Venezia), weakpoint is the plot. You might not believe me, but this one is actually predictable. Still, it is a nice and atmospheric giallo and I can safely recommend this to anyone interested in the genre.

Inkubus - wow, this was bad. A film can be dumb, you know, and this is an example. Inkubus, a demon, walks into a police station one night with a chopped off head. Then he starts to tell the police about his numerous crimes in the past. The plot is facilitating stupid mistakes and the film assumes the viewer will just swallow them. Well, allright, but then I'll burn your flick down in my review in return. Dumb cast and crew, what have you done? Stars like Robert Englund are not a faint image of what they can achieve, this is a missed opportunity in so many ways! How the demon actually is killed in the end is... beyond ridiculous! It is dumb (again) and cliche ridden. Avoid this flick like the hell the demon is supposed to come from.

Bummer - the reviews all said that this film was a waste of time seeing. This isn't a good film, but I disagree with the reviews: I wouldn't call it a waste of time. It's a 70s film, and like 80s films I really like them. There is an atmosphere in those films which attracts me a lot: the music, the clothing, the things people use (cars, etc), I really enjoy watching that. The plot summary on imdb is quite off, as it is only about the last 15 minutes of the film. The rest of the film is about a band called The Group, and they perform and then have some fun with girls afterwards and inbetween. In the end, the bassplayer kills one of those girls and then her friend sets out for revenge. In that final scene, which has the most action, you can also see the most laughable sfx (check when the shotgun blasts). So while I had a good time watching this, it isn't worth a recommendation.

Body Snatchers - Abel Ferrara's take on the famous story about aliens who take over human bodies. This time it all takes place on a military base: a family moves there because the father has to investigate some claims about toxic waste. The daughter falls in love with a soldier who serves there and befirends the daughter of the general in the meantime. However, soon weird stuff starts happening and when the young son of the family sees his mother crumble to dust and then reappear in top condition, he wants to move away. The father doesn't believe immediately, but he soon will... Very nice remake of the snatcher story, the effects were somewhat ridiculous, but that's not bad per se in my book. There were some nice goosebumps moments: I had read about one before I saw the film and it turned out to be true. Recommended.

Dead Season - well, what to say? This zombiemovie has everything you want in a zombie movie, but it isn't a masterpiece. There is gore, there is action, there are enough zombies, there is survival struggle (the story has a lot of similarities with the series The Walking Dead, but it lacks the quality), etc. So if you're in for a zombiefilm you can safely pick this one, it is a lot better than many turds in the genre. If you'r looking for the next Dawn of the Dead (1978) however, then this one isn't it.

Der Teufel in Miss Jonas - the title mislead me a bit (it was a while ago since I downloaded this) and it made me think this wqould be an Exorcist-like film. I couldn't be more wrong. The main character never gets her clothes on in the ntire movie and she plays a nymphomaniac going to hell one day eaarly. So the devil sends her back and she goes and has sex with everyone crossing her path in this single day. Hilarious dialogues, ugly paper mache masks on the "demons" and ridiculous excuses to show even more sex is what this movie is about. It lasts for only 70 minutes, but it feels like way longer, because it is so repetitive. Still, I laughed a lot at the dialogues and the bad acting. Recommended for bad moviefans.

Kaydara - this short film (55 minutes) plays out in the world of The Matrix. It starts out with an animation where Neo is some sort of a mouse and he does all sorts of cool stuff, it is quite funny. After 7 minutes, the fim changes to real actors and the story focuses on Kaydara, a hitman who believes Neo is not the saviour of mankind, but a threat and he should be eliminated. Together with his little brother Iad, who controls their ship, he searches for Neo and tries to combat him, while eluding the agents at the same time. All Matrix-cliches are coming by, like the bullets witht heir visible whizzes, the slow motion fighting, etc. Loads of cgi make up the setting for this film and all French speaking actors are dubbed in English. The story is not totally uninteresting, but I think this is for The Matrix fans only.

Arachnoquake - syfy monster turd with very ugly cgi spiders which keep looking plastic until the end credits roll. The cobwebs are from the partyshop, and the cast is either inexperienced or watered down (Edward Furlong, whatever happened to you?). There are numerous mistakes, like shotgun shells changing colour between shots, people cleaning up from dirt or blood between shots and wtf was up with those marines? Why are they shooting with pistols all the time while they have rifles with them? Oh, and the M16 sounds like an M60 and a shotgun can do damage over 100s of yards. Riiiight. Well, what do you know, it is a syfy film after all. Once you have seen one, you have seen them all. Crapfest to have a luagh at, but there are better SBiG movies out there. I'd skip this one.

Shaft's Big Score - Richard Roundtree is being cool once again in this second installment in the Shaft series. His brother in law gets killed and his former partner now goes for the money in their former business together. Shaft is trying to prevent the money going up in smoke on the gambling addiction of this former partner, and while doing so, he gets involved in some gang war which has been going on for a while in New York. Driving, shooting and from time to time soothing the ladies, Shaft gets this business done of course, while being accompanied by somewhat lousy music as I must say: the music was way worse than in part one, while the story was better. Apparently the director forgot that one of the main attractions of blaxploitation is the music. Well, better luck next time: I have Shaft in Africa already waiting for me :) Still, "Big Score" is a good film, especially if you like 70s movies or blaxploitation.

Rise of the Zombies - how low can you go from one film to another: maybe I should learn to press "Stop" whenever I see "Syfy presents" on screen. I didn't, but now at least I can tell you that this is one superfluous movie which didn't need to be made. Since the success of The Walking Dead series, numerous ripoffs have been made, and this one also bears the influence. In Alcatraz there is a group of refugees trying to find a cure, but suddenly there are hundreds of zombies on the island (no explanation) and they have to flee. The opening scene of this flick had me hoping, because I saw zombies with some real gore. My hope lasted 30s econds, because then I saw a cgi carcrash. A cgi carcrash. Yes. Oh. My. God. If you can't even afford a real car toc rash, then you really have no budget to spend. In the rest of the film Mariel Hemingway (in her 50s now, man she looks old) and Danny Trejo (your cult status is eroding when you do too much of this stuff, Danny), try to make something out of the crappy plot. To no avail: apart from the scene with the very fake pregnant woman and the even more fake baby (at which I laughed hard) there is nothing to see in this film which will remain. Forget it. And the rest of syfy too.

Julia X - for some reason my rip of this was called Julie X, so I mistyped it on all sites where I was searching for more info and subs for this flick. Only halfway through I found out that it was actually called Julia instead of Julie. Sigh. OK, the story: Kevin Sorbo plays a psycho guy who dates girls over the internet and then meets them irl and torutres/kills them. Every girl gets a letter burnt in her thighs, and he is up to W already when he meets Julia. Julia however, is not planning to become the next victim. A nice plottwist, although it has been done before, but still this was quite OK. The only thing which bothered me was how the subplot about Julia's sister developed: I really didn't like that (and she was so dumb! Man!). Apart from that: quite OK, not your average serial killer film.

Deathstalker 2 - this oen doesn't have much to do with Deathstalker 1, this one is funnier. It is deliberately made cheesy, and I really enjoyed that. Oneliners like when the princess shouts "Deathstlaker! You're back!" and he replies "By popular demand" made me smile. Of course ther are the badly dressed up soldiers, demons and this time there are even zombies in a graveyard scene, which was influenced by Return of the Living Dead, I think. No big tits this time, but Sultana jumps around in a nice suit, and since the story is about cloning people (done by an evil wizard of course), it doesn't evenmatter when she dies, as then she can be cloned ;) Very much fun for bad moviefans. Serious fantasy followers should stick to part 1, if even that.

Hypothermia - wow, this one is a tribute to 50s monsterflicks, Creature from the Black Lagoon in the first place. Two families go for some ice fishing, but a monster is spoiling the weekend. Michael Rooker plays the main character and when the monster has made it's first victim, Michael and his friend are trying to kill it so they can get their families into safety. The monster is rally something. It has been a while since I saw a guy running around ina diving suit with a mask on in a horrormovie, but here you have it: Hypotermia features exactly that. Sadly this only happens a lot in the final 30 minutes, so you have to wait for the first 45 to see anything happen at all (almost). Some nice gore, but overall it is too ittle to make this flick worth a view. It is a nice filler when you have several films to see with some friends and you have a gap of 72 minutes, but that's the only plus.

Sodomas Ghost - I felt like watching a Fulci, and this one was still on my "to watch" list. It is one of the later Fulci's, from 1988 and you can see that: the gore is minimal (but when it comes, it is good: like you expect from Fulci) and the story contains way more mistakes than older and better Fulci films. Still, I enjoyd this one a lot, because the atmosphere is just right, and the dialogues and the mistakes make it so cheesy it will water your mouth when you're a bad moviefan. It starts out great, with a scene which could have been cut out from a nazisploitation from the early 70s. Then there were the goofy things, like the two surfboards on the rooftop of the car while the students are on their way to Paris. And the "John! Hey John!" was so much uttered, that I made it a running gag with my wife, who wasn't even watching the film (and still she noticed). There was one quite huge mistake whcih in the end turned out not to be a mistake after all, so that redeemed the film just a little. Just a little, because it made the ending way more cheesy. Recommended for bad moviefans.

War of the Dead - thre are two films with this title, one from 2006 and one from 2011. I saw the one from 2011. The story is a bit too much for me as a history teacher: US soldiers are fighting with the Finns against the Soviets in 1941. There is so much wrong with this premise historically, that it turned out I couldn't ignore it throughout the film. What happens in the film is that these Americans have to help the Finns conquer a Russian bunker, but after a while they notice that they keep killing the same soldiers over and over again. Well, this thing has been done before of course, but in the other films I saw it was more obvious that some evil nazis did the zombie cloning thing. In this one it isn't all so clear, and the fact that pretty soon a Russian boy is helping the Finns/Americans, isn't helping. It also makes the film even more unbelievable. The ending is quite cliche. There is much cgi and some old fashioned gore. Acting is so so, I wouldn't recommend this one.

La Ragazza Che Sapeva Troppo - Mario Bava filmed this movie and it is a mixture between 50s thriller and 70s giallo. Some call it a pre-giallo. The structure which is used in te giallos later is already there: there is a murder and then we get to see many different characters so the guessing game can start. This one wasn't too difficult, and if you are a fan of the genre you won't have any difficulties either. Time enough to enjoy the nice views of Rome, which, although in black and white, are impressive enough. The atmosphere is a bit dubious, as the tension gets released from time to time by some dull "jokes". Funny to see John Saxon in an early role, though. Don't look for gore, as there isn't any. If you like giallos, you can safely watch this, just bear in mind it is not as typical as later installments.

Nachts wenn Dracula erwacht - Jess Franco's take on the classic Bram Stoker story. Very low budget but still with quite an impressive cast. There are some Franco regulars, like Soledad Miranda, Jack Taylor and Maria Rohm, but there are also some more famous castmembers, like Herbert Lom, Klaus Kinski and of course Christopher Lee. Franco himself has quite a large role too. The story is quite true to the book when I go on the connaisseurs (I haven't read the book myself - yet), but the film never gets thrilling or scary and the effects are laughable. Stuffed animals anyone? Still, this isn't a typical Franco, as it is quite stylish and not sleazy at all. Mildly recommended, but keep in mind this was low budget all the way.
