I'm having a bit of a problem with the compressibility of a movie. I've ripped From Hell and since it is over 2 hours long I want to put it on 2CDs. Problem is the compressibility test comes back with .140. With that amount, the lowest I can get the percentage to go is 139%. At 640x272, it is 196.8%! I really don't want to have to do a 1cd rip on this if I can avoid it (although it does get me in "normal" range). Any suggestions? Btw, I'm using GKnot + XviD.

Have you done a compressibility test ?
(bottom right after hitting save&encode first time, select 5 min, now ,and after it's finished (10-20 mins) read the new values)...
I don't trust the first values gknot gives me one bit....

if its Xvid 1.0 beta 3, gknot is incompatible and you have to use virtualdubmod for the actual encoding.

The values I gave are the results after the compressibility test. I've run it, gotten horrible results, tweak the codec, run it again...not much better. Then I would reload defaults and start messing around with it again starting from scratch. I can't get it to get much better...unless I select the DTS audio, but I don't know that I could even use that (??). How frustrating. Do you think maybe it's because the movie is so dark?
Spud, I'm using the version of XviD that came in the GKnot Codec Pack, so I doubt it's a compatibility issue.

I just can't get my head around it , assuming it's NOT a bug....
I read of this before ,but nowhere near as extreme as your case.....
And damned if I can find back the thread......(all these darn forums )
Those values are obviously untrustworthy....
Those values are , quote , " no biblical laws" ...
Hell why not run it thru autoGknot and see what it comes up with ?
It's beyond us I reckon......
Didn't that big mouth NotImportant over at fileheaven face a similar problem with his lousy xfiles movie rip ?
EDIT: you didn't tick 2 cd's AND typed in 1400 mb (per CD)did you ?
Nah ofcourse you wouldn't ....do excuse me
EDIT again : might be vdubmod though ...... -the newest version(s) have some weird bugs .......try something else to rip on a 2cd basis and see what that comes up with - if it's similar weirdness then at leat we can narrow down causes........

I don't know what is causing it. I tried redoing everything fresh (reripping the VOB files, DVD2AVI, etc) and it didn't make any difference. I suppose it could just be something with the movie. It's just weird. And no I didn't click on 2 cd's and type 1400 mb per CD. I don't ever mess with the file size.
I did try to run it just to see what would happen and it came out undersized....BAD (like half the size it should have been). This is just bizarre.
You know, running it through Auto GKnot is a good idea. I'm going to try that and see what happens. I'll just hope that it doesn't trim too much off the top like "auto crop" in GKnot tried to do. I guess it would be a fair trade off if it does work though.

Well AutoGK didn't seem to have much of a problem with it. It came out slightly undersized, but not enough to worry about IMO.

I dunno, i did a 2cd rip of From Hell with AC3 rip and got it to 2 x 700mb with gknot, that was divx 5 though
BTW, is that AR correct?
2.44:1 sounds out, imdb says the AR is 2.35:1

That does seem a bit out. I noticed that regular GKnot was trying to trim more from the top than from the sides (not completely proportionately) also. Apparently AutoGK did the same thing. Do you think I should try redoing it and setting a custom Aspect Ratio? I wanted it to be 640x272 anyways.

Yeah, in gknot you click the auto-crop button then select, "Smart auto crop all"? That's the method to use, normally only give a AR error of no more than 0.3%.
Is AC3 a necessity? It's a dark movie and I believe you might be able to get a good 1cd out of it. You could try Xvid 1.0 beta 3 too. With that, basically disregard the compressability test, use gknot to setup your avs file and encode you video, then load up virtual dub mod and load the avs. Go to video>compression --> 2pass -first pass, file>save as, defer the first pass. Then go to video>compression --> 2pass - second pass, then copy the video filesize from gknot (on the second tab of gknot at the bottom) into the video filesize box on xvid settings. Then files>save as, name-secondpass.avi, click defer task, then file>job control and click start.
League of Gentlemen was giving me grief, but I think i got a good rip out of it in the end, using gknot as calculator and virtual dub mod as encoder. Just a matter of opening your second pass.avi in virtual dub mod, tehn muxing in the AC3, ensuring interleaving is at 64 or 96ms to avoid desync.

Well with the movie being over 2 hours long, I didn't think it was a good idea to do a 1cd rip (even with 2 cds I had a video bitrate of barely over 1000). Since I was doing 2, I went with the AC3. I do have some time before I need to release this (still spreading The Ugly) so I could try your manual VDub + latest XviD method. I've been meaning to play around with doing that anyways.
As for the cropping, that was one of the things that I thought was so odd. Even "smart crop all" was cropping it unproportionately. That and those horrible compressibility test results finally made me say "screw it" and just use AutoGK. There is just something about this movie that GKnot doesn't like. I don't know why.

I was doing the rip at the request of a member at File Heaven. His complaint was that there were no rips available that had the full run-time. I verified it at the time and I couldn't find any that ran the full 2:02 (some were as much as 15-20 minutes short!). Unless off course there is another available now that wasn't when I checked...

117mins is the full runtime PAL, NTSC is 122 min. Both have exactly the same content.
I believe that cpy is the correct length, bar cut credits. Can't confirm enricos though.

I figured at least part of the "short" run times problems were a Pal/NTSC difference, but I didn't figure there would be that much of a difference. I suppose considering the length of the movie, that's not really unrealistic.
