Trouble is I watch horror mainly so I can mindelessly follow a film, not have to use my brain.

I agree with your example, but the others could have been. We could have seen what she saw when she looked up. We could have seen the baby more. They showed a willingness to show something when the brother got his lip bit off and less so with the baby, and I wish that they had just gone overboard. Show us the dad torn in half. Maybe give us a peek at Brad's burned arm. As Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson have taught us, nothing goes better with dark comedy than splatter.

END SPOILERS****
I enjoyed it. I was just disappointed that it wasn't as great as it could have been. Still, its a new director to watch (and the writer). Watch it so you can say that you saw his first film.

This wasn't really a situation that called for splatter. This was very much a scary movie with dark comedy elements and not the other way around. If they had turned it into a splatstick, I would have been disappointed. It had true tension, something you don't see in even the best splatter comedies, that was created because the character's were so strong you really began to care about them and what happened to them. I also love the way that the writers constantly manipulated your emotions by making you rethink your opinions of the characters so completely. Over the top gore would have completely ruined this movie.

Hahaha! That is true. I guess we'll just say this is one you have to see and decide for yourself. :)

I've seen it yesterday and I must say it wasn't what I expected... it was much better :D

I thought it's another silly american production and I don't really remember why I downloaded it. Yesterday I had that thought: 'well let's see something', I mean a horror movie which I can watch and don't think at all. So my choice was Dead end.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD*

After few minutes of thinking: naah, this was in that movie, and that was there I realized acting is actually quite good. The 'atmosphere' became quite heavy. That was shown well - how the familly started to be angry at each other. And Ray Wise. I knew him from Twin Peaks and that made the feeling even more strange. And the road...
I just felt into that movie (if that means anything in english), it really became everything to me for that amount of time. Don't know why. I mean I always help horror movies to get me into a propoer mood - I'm watching them alone, in the middle of the night, in the dark room with sound all around me, but why did that one made me so scared?
Well... the road in the middle of nowhere, dark night, few people, 'funny things' happening, all of it started like quite normal trip... the woods... The car... and the most important thing in a horror movie: you don't really know what's happening...
oh, and those commedy moments: I'm really glad there where some
(I know my english isn't really enough to tell my feelings, I tried thoug ;))

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS END*

so I liked it much, much more than I thought I would
if someone is still wondering: get it and watch it alone at night

It's collecting very different opinions on FH too, I really have to watch it soon, especially after the last recommendation!

I thoroughly enjoyed this, it's EASILY the scariest film I've seen so far this year.

You've seen the plot loads of times before and the end will disappoint, however the journey to get there is genuinly frightening, unsettling, funny and well crafted. It reminded me of a Stephen King short story

IMHO the film is as much a study of fear and the breakdown of the family unit as it is about the "plot" itself. It works exceptionally well and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this director's work.

I'm telling you...give it another chance. I don't think a movie has ever brought me to such extremes so quickly and so many times. I alternated between laughing my ass off and curling up with an almost uncomfortable giant tension knot in my stomach throughout the entire thing. It was a great time and it managed to get 2 or 3 out loud "yelps" from me...and not just because of cheap startle scares...pure tension baby. That's a fine horror movie right there.

Yeah, the movie was quite good. As PCA said the ending is lame dissapointing, but what he said the journey is interesting and entertaining. I actually empathized (sp?) with the characters and when a moviemaker and cast can accomplish that, then it's pretty good in my book. I enjoyed it :)

I've just seen the movie and I have to say it's absolutely fucking brilliant. It's creepy enough without loads of blood and limbs torn off, but what I think really makes it great is the sense of humour.

I think you got a point there, that's how I read it too. See how many dark secrets a family can have... It's also a study of the usual stereotypes: a mother who always knows better, a father who is the head of the family and tries to be authoritative, a pregnant daugter and a "rebel" son who's only interests are: teasing other people with stupid jokes, rock music and jerking off... Watch how those stereotypes work out in a critical situation.

One of the best texts:

00:34:30
-"How's Marrion doing?"
-"she's pregnant."

[/SPOILERS]

This is not about this movie being or not being a horror flick. I don't judge movies by the amount of blood shown in them. The dialogues in this one are brilliant (and I think they contain some very true observations). Even without the horror part the flick would have been great. And the scene with the lip bitten off is just a nice bonus.

Same reaction here. One of the best movies I ever saw. Dialogs and jokes are really superb! Brilliant! Thanks Polityk.

I liked this one. Obviously had a low budget, and I think it pulls everything off extremely well. It doesn't try to play out of its budget in anyway, infact it uses it to such great advantage that it makes the film a lot better.

Script was extremely tight, and acting was top notch (bar one)... which is extremely rare in a low budget situation.

I do however have criticisms about the ending, I think it treats the audience way too dumb and insists on explaining the obvious. A twist ending, like every film really tries to execute nowadays lets face, was quite obvious, but an open ending would have suited this film soooooooo much better. It felt like it didn't trust its audience enough to think even on a basic level at this point.

Personally it should have finished, immediately when it went to the hospital scene... or maybe not even that, it would have also worked well with voice over a fade to black. The herse driver was a) a crap actor b) cheesey as hell, that should never have been shown, it was obvious there was a car crash, it should have been open ended. Likewise with the nurses badge, its like they didn't trust the audience to figure it out without repeating it out load. Which degreaded the whole thing

All that said, and with those quarms in mind, I still think its a great little film. It could have been significantly better with the above fixed though. I think perhaps it was because it was for an american audience that it played the ending like it did, maybe I'm being unfair? It's just happened so many times in the past for that reason so that's why I suspect that.

Anyway, my 2 cents :D
