Seriously tho, I see exactly where you are coming from mate. For me a story is most important, it doesn't even have to be that good, just as long as it captures my imagination. |
im only 21 but anyone whose ever met me knows that i was born a few decades too late lol.
things were better in the old days anyway i reckon, there were wars and such like but never unprovoked atrocitys like we get today, also there was more respect towards other people

i will agree the original series wasnt that great so y did it gets its own movie, these things shouldnt happen, if only we could neuter hollywood execs brains possibly some sort of really finnicky picky eater zombie is required that only likes no brained people like hollywood execs
hey theres an idea for a movie if i ever heard one - "Attack of The Zombie Nobrainer" starring tom savini as the zombie, that annoying guy in will & grace as the guy who gets eaten, and our very own spud as "The Hulk".
Thats a part specially written for you spuddly

Good way of putting it. I'd just like to add that it seams like most people don't even apreciate to think for them selves at all. They are like babies that have to be spoon-fed. doc wrote: | just let them live in their own world....

I know but what gets to me is when they insist so very much that they are right beyond all doubt, when you know they have no clue. And ofcource when these people think they know alot about movies and say I'm only watching movies 'No-one else has ever heard of'. The ignorance is like an axe in the face. I'm not claiming I know everything about the entertainment industry (that's the only thing I know anything aboot), in fact I learn something new every day (AND I LOVE IT) but when ignorant people want to educate me in things I know much more than them, and claiming me to be the one who's misstaken that's very anoying. maxpayne2409 wrote: | im only 21 but anyone whose ever met me knows that i was born a few decades too late lol.

That's the way I feel alot of the time too. But then I think aboot all the cool technology we have now and all that will come and I feel I was born to early... I want to go to the moon on holiday!! spud wrote: | Hey, hulk wasn't that bad. To be fair the original series was shit too

Agreed Ang Lee did a pretty fair attempt to make it more than just your average action fil(th)m, but it's not a good idea to try to make a delicassy out of dog shit.
And they used a completley CGI Hulk. BAh. Btw, in the version I saw there was a scene where the hulk's trousers flickered on and off a few seconds.

I'm very impressed with Channel 4, turning over just by chance, a quick 'critical analysis of zombie movies' was on by that movie critic that does the little backgrounds before the movies (he's a famous critic but i forget his name).
Anyway, they just showed the first 9 mins of of the new dawn of the dead. Whilst I still don't think it holds shit to the original (at this point I guess its unfair, since its a movie against nine minutes in retrospect, and its full of hollywood style corn (plus that damn feeling all modern horror films have, its hard to describe... kind of a fake and unatmospheric overture... Its been present ever since scream). It did seem a lot better than the first time i watched the begining of the movie. I was very disspointed and highly annoyed, now its dissapointed and still ticked off.
I may go and see this at cinema, i'm undecided at this point. Does it get significantly better? If its more of the same, I'd rather keep my ?10 (it takes to go to a good cinema and get some food).

i know what you mean, i think tis studio lighting and the fact that the pictures are a lot clearer now then say in the 70s 80s etc, so a lot of movies look lighter where its meant to be dark and because of clearer picture quality it means you can see everything right down to the sweat on someones forehead from 60yards away, while this may be good for some things with horror it takes away the feeling of "did i see something move in the background etc.

technically they didn't show the first 9 mins, it was more like the 2nd minute to the 11th....there was a scene prior to Ana driving her car through the estate where you see her at work in a hospital getting a report about an infected person who was bitten on the hand
and it does get better IMO, true it doesn't hold shit compared to the original but this is only similar to the original in name and the fact they hide out in a mall for a time.
don't be such a tight ass and spend that tenner spud it is definately worth seeing on the big screen i would have gone to see it again today but i had a bitching hangover so didn't fancy all that surround sound doing my head in

Needed to hear that. I just had the feeling it would either stay at the same level for a while and drop, or get substantailly worse. Might go and see it now Quote: | i would have gone to see it again today but i had a bitching hangover so didn't fancy all that surround sound doing my head in |
I just need to find someone who wants to go and see it, i don't often go to the cinema alone... well except the pr0... no erm... never.

well i was going to go with the wife (again) but i had to take her shopping instead.....with hindsight i think the loud cinema would have been the cheaper and less painful option
oh and btw that reviewer was Mark Kermode the old radio 1 move man who generally i thought talked a load of bollocks on his reviews but it did seem he was impressed with DOTD that dude goes absolutely mental over anything "Exorcist" he did a show about it's 25th anniversary (i think) and basically he was coming in his pants if anyone ever mentioned the movie :-o strange i thought it was dull

I suspect the makeup and always super beautifull actors are also a factor in the faked-ness. And the sound and dialogues. I haven't seen one film that successfully depictured something that came off as believable people doing everyday stuff without it looking all staged, in ages!

a bit of cross posting from fh:
Quote: | MagicUK wrote: | went to the cinema to see it tonight...thought it was pretty darn good....different from the original but really good. Imo the ending was more satisfying than the original. |
Everyone dies in the 'original' original. It was cut during filming for a few reasons, the major one being it couldn't be shot well enough. Quote: | I agree with the 'running' zombie comments, I just think a zombie sprinting is nowhere near as creepy as the slow mindless determination the original zombie's. |
I've seen it twice now (once at cinema, one at home ). I was overly harsh on it, it did got better. However, it wasn't a zombie bite on the original. I like the communication of the roof but everything was so post-scream cliche, and everyone's fucking stupid too I thought the captain oats bit was a bit laughable, Romero would never have done that... he knows a hell of a lot more about human nature than shown in this movie. The running zombies were good in some respects, but the 'oh i'm a zombie and i'm on tv ma' was over the top. See the first zombie seen in the clip. WTF was that jump about. That stuff crops up all through the The fact that they left the Shopping Mall (pronounced MAL people, not maul ) was just wrong. I mean wtf, they had it sweet... nothing like the prison atmosphere of the Romeros. In Romero's you really feel like they are trapped and there's nowhere to go, whereas in the end of this; oh well, lets sail off into the sunset shall we? In the end of Dawn of the Dead (proper), its humans that screw humans and imo this makes the ending all the better and profound. I would have thought the originally intended ending, or something to that degree would be much better in Romero's but the basic ending is still established. What this one did 'better' was scale, the trendy intro sequence does well at showing this is international (yes, there are other countries!) and its fucked up everywhere (and no1 knows wtf is going on). I thought this part was by far the best. There are more zombies, there are more people alive and you know that this is just a microcasm of what's happening everywhere. This really pulps up the chaos which this film does to cover up the post-scream shallowness of modern horror movies. It works pretty well, but ultimately, this, and I'm going to have to state the obvious, fails to come anywhere near as groundbreaking or enjoyable as the original. In contrast, Romero took the trapped side (and imo, the reason Dawn works so well). Whilst you see other people, it has nothing to do with them and you don't expect people to just show up willy nilly. This also focues the audience on the fact that its a handful of people, in a huge mall, surrounded by people who want nothing more than to eat them. Another great context pumped out by the original is that whilst they are there and surrounded by all these products, all of them are completely useless, shallow items doing nothing more than showing them how shallow their lives are. This simply isnt shown in the new one (apart from a brief clip of them 'endulging' themselves). Character wise, cannon folder here. I doubt most of them existed until the writer/director thought 'hmmm we haven't killed someone in 5 minutes' and then pencilled them in as afterthoughts. An other unfortunate incident is the over endulgance in the little grey box, yes CGI. Now whilst I think CGI in post production is a god send in some cases, heightening atmosphere (its used so well in many films when you don't realise its there), you can tell some scenes were like "oh well we'll do that in CG afterwards". The problem here is, it looks like shit and its totally unbelievable. However, they weren't over using it so I'll let em off After all that, it is still a decent enough film (best zombie movies in quite a while), and I can only hope pumps a lot more funds in to the horror genre (and zombie movies especially!). It beats the likes of Resident Evil (which everyone knows was a huge dissapointment and abandoned everything that made the games great) which was still an okay film. Quote: | Well worth a visit to the cinema...(only don't take the girlfriend, mine's hated it) |
Indeed, but its no Star Wars / LOTR epic, if you have a sound system and a decent display of any description, the experience will be just the same come DVD release date. It isn't earth shattering in anyway, so 'a must see at cinema' comment is an overstatement if you hear it from anyone. Best zombie movie in a while, but not the best zombie movie by quite a while |

Not sure if I've posted in this thread yet
But anyway ssaw this one at the cinema and definetly enjoyed it!
Of course not a patch on Romero's but I think they avoided trying to "remake" it enough, to just have a zombie film in a shopping CENTRE and I enjoyed the twist ending that was different to the Original!
And seriousley that film needed RUNNNING zombiez, it would've come off all wierd if they shuffled, it needed that to keep up the pace.
Where as Romero didn't.
ALL IN ALL A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE GENRE. BRING ON SHAUN

and there's a TV remake of Salem's Lot "in production" with Rob Lowe and Donald Sutherland. There's also a "sequel" to HGLs "2000 Maniacs" called "2001 Maniacs" (like another one's gonna make a difference!). Oh yeh...even further down the line...I believe there is also a remake of "The Amityville Horror" in planning aswell.
