hmm i thought something very similar had been posted before.
CCE is the other major MPEG encoder. Beyond that I don't know... hate VCDs myself, never download them. Only DVD and mpeg4, and for the latter gknot does everything

Use google to search for KVCD or SKVCD, if done properly you can have decent bitrates and a quite good TV quality. Never made some myself but in Holland this a very popular way to encode movies for the standalone player. Best method of making them is to use TMPGenc.

Yeah if you make a svcd the quality will be very good, at least me thinks i've done dozen flick this way. I recommend you not to make an SKVCD and definately not a VCD
Why are some of you guys negative about SVCD, VCD is crap imho SVCD i think is actually pretty darn good !!

Because its a primitive crap technology that is far inferior to any mpeg4 codec, requires more discs to get a okay result in comparison, is encoded with wasteful blackboards, supports crappier quality sound and worst of all, can not be reshared once burnt.
Pick a reason All criticisms imo are very valid, and the one in favour is... it works on a standalone. But with mpeg4 standalones and the DVDr format, I don't see it with that much life left in it when mpeg4 goes mainstream.

Ok the part of the reshare i understand, therefore it sux.
Also for the amount of disc your probably right, as for the sound it isn't that bad at least me thought so lol !!
As for it works in the standalone, well almost everything workxx here in the standalone divx, xvid u name it. Nevertheless i don't have any bad feelings towards the SVCD in anyway. In fact maybe the time in the hourglass has run out, but it was good for the time beiing

possibly, I've never seen one... but I'm not in the habit of wasting 3 discs for an 80 minute movie which I assume is its price (and why no1 does them).
In retrospect, compressability is far higher with mpeg4, you fit a better quality rip onto smaller space. It's a win-win situation, I see no reasonable defence for an inferior platform with one advantage that is quickly becoming a non-issue. I reiterate the whole issue here, substandard in every respect apart from standalone compatability
I understand why the exist, it is purely for the non-technical minded people who just want to put an okay quality movie in their dvd player. And I understand why it is dying out quickly, because for the technical minded, its substandard. It maybe "alright" quality, but its far inferior to easier and better encodes using mpeg4... why have "okay" when you can have quality?
That's why you don't see people defending it, there's no point. That is also why SVCD releases are dwarfed by MPEG4 releases.

I agree with you on that, i still like SVCD though even I don't care much for it anymore since, and you put it right: the Divx and the like are far better spread so eventually the choice of downloading a svcd or a divx will become much easier.
Also i think in the near future almost every standalone player will be able to play divx, xvid, etc. HELL YEAH !!
ow btw what is the quarterpixel tecnique in the new divx stuff??

To me its the equivalent to a severe tachyon disruption off our starboard bow. You'll probably find something on http://www.doom9.org about it if you need to know what it means

probably a matrix used to significantly increase the quality of the rip, and your player needs flashing to understand how to decode it properally.... at a guess
But if it didn't have a great benefit it wouldn't be used

@Emperor, if you've got a Yamada 6100 like me there will never be an upgrade for qpel or GMC support as the ESS chip can't handle it. However the newer 6600s can handle qpel.
I just re-encode to DivX 5.11 and CBR if I ever get any playback issues with whatever format of MPEG4.
