I doubt anyone here's bothered buying any due to the outrageous price.
A 50 pack is 331.01 pounds, not dollars - POUNDS! That's 6.60 pounds per disc (that's damn near 10 US dollars per disc). :-o

Haven't tried, I'm not paying ?6.60 per disk You can revert your firmware if it all goes tits up though Quote: | A 50 pack is 331.01 pounds, not dollars - POUNDS! That's 6.60 pounds per disc (that's damn near 10 US dollars per disc). |
What's your point exactly? So they're expensive at the moment, DVD-/+r was when they were first released, they'll come down to sensible prices.

Yep, my mate was the first to buy a DVD writer and he spent ?120 on 50 blank +R's
A couple of months later you could get 50 for the fraction of that cost hehe

That's my point, they're useless due to the cost at the moment.

Waddaja say?
I'm not satisfied with my current Nec ND-1300a at all though, so I'm a little sceptical about buying a new Nec drive... |
actually... you got your topic title wrong +R9 is Double Layer, Dual Layer is -R9
You can blame the japanese for this bright spark naming convention.

Jack Deth wrote: | Also I wouldn't spit on a NEC drive (you do realise NEC is Packard Bell) much less taint my PC with one. Hence my Sony DRU-530A DVD burner (burns 8x DVD5-R and 8x DVD5+R 4x DVD5+-RW after the firmware update). |
Wheras your $130 Sony DRU-530A is really a re-badged Optowrite (WHO???) DDO401 which retails for ~$70
I'd rather have my NEC / Packard Bell any day than be ripped off by Sony to the tune of $60/$70 !!!!
Read the (not particularily positive) review of the Sony here :-
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Article ... 0&index=14
And compare with :
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Article ... 3&index=13
To be perfectly honest I couldn't give a shit who makes the damn things, if they are good value for money and do whan I need them to, if Packard Bell are the best on the market, hell I'll buy their products, why wouldn't I?? I certainly WOULDN'T EVER buy a sony as all they are are rebadged Lite-on / Optowrite (dependant on model) drives which they then charge double for !!!

I'm the complete opposite, I'd prefer a good make from a competant company. NEC drag behind in both imo, burners are lesser quality that lots on the market and seem to break quicker
As soon as media hits the markey, I'll probably buy a NEC, flash it then replace it immediately when a decent brand comes out

With the exception of that line, you have a point, BUT every comparative review I've seen of 8x drives (mainly those at cdrinfo, who seem to be the most comprehensive and trustworthy) has the ND2500A placed top or near top.
After the 1300a fiasco, where I think everyone who bought one had it go faulty (certainly on this forum!) this is NEC's second (and last) chance with me, the 2500A so far has been better than the 1300A ever was
Sony on the other hand piss me off, I can understand buying Plextor or Pioneer, but people who buy Sony think their getting a decent quality product, but it's a blatant con, they're getting an Optowrite (I mean who the fuck are they???) but paying double the cost of the model Sony decided to rebadge. NEC may well be inferior to Plextor, Pioneer etc, but unlike Sony at least they don't rebadge shit and dress it up as shinola.

I got my sony for 80 bucks when they first arrived. I always go through Tech Data with a PO and skip any third party distributers or retailers. As of yet not one coaster even when I burned 4x media at 8x. I've yet to see an NEC drive that didn't fry or burn coaster after coaster after some use.

That's not a bad deal, it's now only ~$10 more expensive than the model it's a rebadge of
My NEC is OK, no great shakes, but I can honestly say that the 2500a is a VAST improvement over the 1300a (which was a heap of shit)
the only coasters I've had recently was using infodisk01 dvd's and burning at 8x, infodisk dvd's are terrible, very cheap and very nasty

no datawrite are absolutely awesome, they consistantly win every single benchmark (due to price/quality ratio) and are europes biggest selling brand with brilliant compatability.
http://www.dvd-recordable.org/modules.p ... tent&id=79
V2 are decent enough too (yellow ones right?)
sorry pca but it sounds like its your burner or setup
edit: ah right, yellows and red V2. Both burn and playback fine here.
All burnt with pioneer 105 @ 4x, no problems

I've just been using Ridata 4x DVD-R discs. They burn at 8x without fail, not a single coaster. I've been picking up 100 packs for 25 US dollars from my local BJ's club.

They are Ricoh (sp?) discs with a generic name. Same expensive media for 1/4 the cost. I've read nothing butt good things about this media, so I tried some and have been very happy.
