I'm considering softmodding my XBOX using the Morden's Audio Hack method detailed here: CDfreaks and have some questions.

Firstly, how do I found out if my XBOX is 1.0 or 1.1? Whatever serial number was behind the hole in the box is gone now (I got it second hand).

I presume that the MXM dashboard will allow me to install XBMP from a CD and then play AVIs from CD-RWs with it (this is all I really want to softmod it for), so does anyone have a link to screenshots for it?

And finally, can the softmodding be turned on and off for going onto XBOX Live, or is this only possible with a modchip?

Thanks! :)

Hey MCMLXXXVIII, unfortunatly the only way to really tell what version xbox you have is to crack it open and then follow the guides on how to check.

The serial match isn't 100% positive - just a guide :(

The best place to go (main page / forum wise) is :
<a href="http://www.xbox-scene.org" target=blank>xbox scene</a>

And as far as xbox live and soft modding go, it's not really wise, as xbox live is constantly updating your dash board and bios, so soft modding will always knacker it up :? , you really have to have a hardware chip that can be switched on/off.
I learned that from experience when I tried to soft mod my bro's xbox and he went on xbox LIVE with it
All he got was the dreaded code 23 page instead of his dash :o

PC_Arcade is the man to talk to about soft modding, so when he sees this will help ya out

In mean time take a gander at xbox-scene :beerchug:

and as a passive comment, I must point out what a wasted commodity an unmodded xbox is

1.x or whatever doesn't matter, the only thing that does is that your Kernal Number (go to settings then about) is 5100 or less, if it is you can softmod your xbox :)

You can if it's higher too, but it's more fiddly.

Also, Mordens may not best way to go anymore, the "Ultimate Dashboard Exploit" is better and works with live (and IIRC any dash version) you can find more details in this thread and a comparison of all the exploits here

Couldn't agree more :)

Thanks for the advice, but the more I look into this the more complex it gets! :-o

I may hunt for an independent shop in a nearby town to get it chipped, does anyone know of any good places in Cumbria?
