I'm no expert, but did have a similar problem on win98 a while back.

In my case, the drive wasn't being recognised as a valid medium for music cd's. You could try checking the drives and your music playing software to see if they have access. Obvious answer, but it's all I can think of (and did solve my problem), sorry.

Had somewhat similar problems once.
try simply removing the cdr in device manager and press the 'scan for new hardware'.
