I'm looking at getting my first DVD burner, and I'm aiming at the cheapest ones. As always when shopping low budget, you have to be careful of what you buy since you can easily end up with a really bad quality product...

I have little experience with different brand CD burners, my first one was HP which, after the drive breaking down, I've had hard time trusting as a "decent" brand...
I currently have a Sony 12x CD-RW drive which has served me for a few years but now it seems it's toasting coasters of 50% of the audio material I feed it

Now I'm looking for a DVD burner one and I'm asking you guys what DVD burner brands or products do you consider decent quality?

I found that these brands have some of the most low-priced products (less than 80 ?)

HP
Toshiba
Sony
NEC
Lite-on
LG
Ricoh
Pioneer

the HP DVD8301 DVD+R/RW sells for 48.90 ?

DVD+R 4X
DVD+RW 2.4X
CD-R 16X
CD-RW 10X

it's based on NEC ND-1100A (has the same hardware)

could this be any good?

hmm also I wonder how to find out if my DVD player supports DVD+R/RW ?

edit: it does. I think i'm going for the HP/NEC writer. it's cheap. I'll buy a better one in a year or two ;)

I would say that you should go for a Lite-on burner...

The one i bought is a Lite-on LDW-811S:
DVD+R 8x, DVD+RW 4x, DVD-R 4x, DVD-RW 2x and CD-R 40x, CD-RW 24x.

Well I dunno if you bothered looking at the pioneer one two threads down, but its
Dual Layer x4 and +r x16, for about ?10 more than current brands that are half the speed ;)

I would seriously NOT buy a NEC ;) and definitely not buy a piece of shit from HP... they are seriously crap.
