cos friday the 13th sucks total donkey balls, and is almost entirely pure crap. Plus there's the addition that, along with being terrible, they are made by paramount.

I'm ordering this bitch.. shame its only the first 3 movies. I know the others aren't too hot, but it would nice to have them included, even if it was just the movies with no extras.

The packaging isn't QUITE as nice as it looks TBH, it's better than the amicus boxset, but it doesn't quite fit together on every side.

Still it's the disks that matter and I'll let you know as and when I watch them :)

OK, Just watched the first disk and the picture and sound quality are excellent.

HOWEVER, my disk vibrates like CRAZY the buzzing from the DVD player is so load it gave me a headache within 2 minutes of putting the disk in the drive, I have to jam a toothpick between the tray and the chassis to quiten it down. Both the 1st and 2nd films have the same vibration issue, the third and the bonus are OK. Other than that (which I hope Anchor bay will sort out) these disk are HIGHLY recommended to any Hellraisr fan, just make sure you check the disks.

Eww, I saw the box in a shop this morning. Not as good as I thought it would be. I've already got Jap imports of Hellraiser 1, 2 and 3 anyway so I definitely won't bother now. I'll await my little starbug model with the Red Dwarf V DVD instead. :D

And the movies themselves freeze, the extras would b nuked by ANY release group going for having totally wrong AR (they appear in a little window in the centre of the TV!)

Bad BAD BAD, returning to play ASAP.

I think you have a crap player PCA, or something wrong, but my discs are perfect and a really great set. You've got some ace early shorts by clive barker!!!!, and then some awesome rare documentries on the making of hellraiser

Verified:
Does not freeze (at least not Hellraiser 1 played in zoomplayer)...
Do not shake/vibrate the player (imo, your player is on its last legs/poorly made)... or at least my pioneer 108 drive and the one in my front room have no problems
AR is almost spot on, as near as you can get it since TVS don't display perfect 16:9/4:3, but they are fine.. it even has the perfect thetrical AR of 1.78:1 which is impressive, you'd expect them to crop it to 1.85:1. On the extras you have mixed content type, some is anamorphic (no black boarders, your player should add the boarders on unless its made by pre-schoolers), non-anamorphic and some is 4:3

I think before returning you make sure you've got your dvd player setup. It sounds very cheaply made and it sounds like its not picking up anamoprhic widescreen correctly. Some players you have to go into a menu system and pyshically setup your drive to a certain output (ie. 16:9 letterbox instead of 16:9 if you don't have a widescreen telly).

I've only checked disc one mind, but your player is to blame by the sounds of it ;) If you want me to take a scene for a crash, or some AR to verify your player is to blame I will do so... thats no problem :)

I'm wondering, the pauses... is it because your player is simply incapable of playing back a high bandwidth video file in an anomorphic mode? Sounds like your player is too crappy to keep up. If it is indeed this poorly made, then I wouldn't be surprised its incapable of switching AR properally.

For those that don't own it there's a nice review here:
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=12862

I'll inspect further and report back, but as it stands, its an absolute bargin at ~?20 :)

Err WHAT???!!!!

Don't you start, there are quite a few people complaining over at AB's forum. The seraphim featurettes are NOT correct on my, your or any other hardware player. I've tried it on 4 (2 xbox's, ps2 and a standalone Cyberhome player) and it's the same on all of them.

Just got mine in the mail today....takes longer to get over seas I guess : )

Anyway, all 4 discs play fine for me on both my Philips and a JVC standalone. Very nice.

As said, can you state EXACTLY which extras your referring to. There are 4 discs, with extras and several at that. I've played many and all have the correct AR (except for the ones that are cropped of course, but thats not an AR error, that's just pan/scan).
ie. what disc and feature are you referring to, and I'll check and take a post if its wrong.

There are no problems with the disc in terms of playback, that is definitely a false accusation. Hellraiser didn't freeze during playback.

AR I'll have to check which extra you are referring to, but the ones I checked were all the correct ratio, barring the panscan features, which were infact, panscan rather than 16:9. There is no AR error though, even though it isn't theatrical.

AR will either be correct for all or wrong for all, so that should be easy to check :) The only thing thats 'cropped' purposely is the H3 on disc 4 (which it says in the system). I think they included that to fill up space.

Onto the actual disc complaints, I read those complaints and it seems that people are knackering their discs on the one hand, and there's some slight incompatability with sony.

Just on the point of the 'overly tight holders' in the box, I have been watching the films and features over the last week and have removed and replaced the discs a few times. As careful as I have been, small cracks have come up on the clear plastic on the inside of at least one of the discs (I don't want to remove the others unnecessarily to check).

Must re-emphasise that I have had no playback problems whatsoever - noise or otherwise - and I love the packaging, but in future I'll be sticking to digipaks.

Its a tricky balance, discs held in impractical boxes are always better too tight than too loose - I prefer small cracks on the inside than scratches on the playing surface but would rather have to deal with neither.

There's a number of box sets (the various coffins) coming out likely to use the same clips, I do hope digipaks will also be offered for those, though that doesn't appear to be the intention currently.

3. I can only conclude that MY disk 1 and 2 have suffered a mastering problem.

This is not a trait of all of them though. Mine do not have these problems (hooray). I will make bloody well sure when I get home, but reading that thread, not everyone has problems. Strange that i bought mine from the same place though and I have no problems.

No, your HARDWARE does not have problems according to the thread on AB the following dvd players DO have problems ranging from excessive noise to freezing during the movie:-

Denon DVD2900
Denon ADV-M71
Scanmagic DVD player (no model number given)
Hitachi PC DVD ROM (no model number given)
Xbox
PS2
Toshiba SD100E
Sony DVP NS730P
panasonic dvd (no model number given)
Bush DVD-AV11K
LG DVD-233OP
pioneer dcs 303

Plus a further 7 - 10 posts where harware is not named, but the disks suffer the same problems

As for the Featurettes :-
Quote:
But, when I sat down to watch the featurettes, I noticed that the non-Nucleus productions - specifically the two Seraphim featurettes ported from the US Hellraiser and Hellbound discs - were incorrectly formatted so that they played windowboxed (black bars all sides) despite clearly being intended for 1.78:1 presentation. I had to use the zoom function on my player to watch them properly.

Didn't see that but I just tested with every DVD player I could get my hands on.
Worked fine in pioneers x3, NEC, pacific, sony (old player that I can't be arsed looking for the serial on). There was no noise or anything in any of them, but I did notice it took longer to load in the pacific.

So I take it that all discs display these symptoms just in those players? I can understnad the sony ones, having owned a PS2 (and by proxy Hitachi, since the drives are normally identical), but that's quite a compatability issue :o Infact it sounds downright weird

As for the final comment, that isn't anything to do with AR its to do with MATTING. AR is aspect ratio, as in the matting dimensions are wrong, whereas matting is to do with the size of the matte in relation to the screen. The featurettes do have black matte, but they have spot on AR ;) Black matting is sometimes required to maintain AR on tvs, hence why you'll notice the black matte round captures if your an analogue guy ;) However, it does seem extreme, but I've seen this before.

Have you sent yours back to Anchor Bay or to Play.com? if its the former can you keep us posted on the developments, so we can know if we can get replacements or whatever.

I see no reason to return them though, since none of the stuff mentioned happens (brand quality... must be  ). The matting on the few extras i see what your talking about, but thats fixable in a button click so I can live with it :)

Looks great on the marketing end...best thing Anchor Bay has done since the Book of the Dead release. To bad on the Matting...you would think they could have doen better...but hey...we are talking anchor bay here which has taken a nosedive into the movie releasign asshole of the world...what happened with them is anyones guess..still the box is cool..although I was able to pick up a lament box at Hot Topic in my local mall years ago.To bad I scared pinhead off though when I opened the damned thing....must have been the gimp mask I was wearing. :P
