call me a conspiracy theorist but this is my view, valve made one hell of an amount of dosh on hl, they invest it all in hl2 pretty much guarenteed of a global huge seller...not gd enough.....how can we make more..

take control of distribution of content and future games and mods, ala steam is invented, cut out the middle man and sell direct to the customer, big profit.

hl2 is gonna b sold in 2 ways, a 1 off payment or a subscription prolly through steam, with all updated contend being delivered only to subscribers

the hl mods weve all been enjoying for free will increasingly go the same way as a pay per update pile of steaming steam shite.

they basiclly want us all to be subscribed to their cash cow which means a steady stream of cash for them and prolly a total ripoff for us, i know which option il be taking.

stream is and always will be optional, don't get too caught up in that junk :)

On a side note, Valve has released its modding tools. They are on this months issue of 3d World (3d software industry magazine)

There's some stunning footage of HL2. Looks like so much fun to play!

http://66.90.75.92/suprnova/torrents/17 ... vi.torrent

Is a 34mb, but poor quality video clip that lasts 13mins. Totally new preview and you get to see some excellent location shots and physics show off (shooting a heat seaking missle at someone on top of a crane, then watching him blow 100m across the sky and landing across railings looks like a great game). I think the reply value is going to be very high on this one

http://66.90.75.92/suprnova/torrents/17 ... ip.torrent
is a high quality version of this I believe, at 664mb and is the whole thing. The first comes along very fast, this one is coming along slightly slower, but is being seeded by fileplanet.com so is coming along steady :)

Three reviews down, a great deal more to go. Three magazines from three different countries have now started to send their Half-Life 2 reviews into the public domain. With PC Gamer (UK), PC Format (Slovenia)* and PC Gameplay (Benelux) all giving it reviews 90%, it's looking like this will be a common trend. Here are the scores so far:

PC Gamer (UK): 96%
PC Format (Slovenia): 96%
PC Gameplay (Benelux): 90%

Average score: 94%

Many more reviews are expected this coming week, and we'll keep you updated on the scores as they come in.

* PC Format (Slovenia) is believed to contain a translation of the review appearing in PC Format (UK)

MMORPG Licenses H-L 2 Engine
http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/m ... gine.shtml
Quote:
Twilight War, a game described as a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) with an integrated First Person Shooter (FPS) style combat system, has licensed Valve's Half-Life 2 engine. In a joint announcement, Valve and Smiling Gator Productions have patted each others backs with SGP claiming that the engine is ...one of the gaming world's premier technologies... and praising the engine's ...combat system, physics, and advanced AI.

Twilight War - After the Fall now joins Troika Games' Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and an, as yet, untitled project from Arkane Studios.

The engine's potential is undeniable but how exactly it can be utilised in a game which claims to combine FPS gameplay with MMORPG depth remains to be seen. Valve however, may end up needing as many licensees as possible since the, well publicized, feud with Vivendi may leave the company with considerable debt. It is not surprising then that SGP have praised Valve for their excellent support.

About that feud, it was ages ago, but it was over HL2 as you might imagine, that article is from here:
http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/m ... gine.shtml

Who are a decent news site since its kind of cool/cracking/gaming kind of news :)

Basically Valve aren't happy that vivendi is taking so much profits from them and putting a lot of pressure on them, which is why they are trying to build steam up as a pure ecommerce (digital order, digital delivery, digital product) venture. I for one have got HL2 steam version since I got my ATI card ages ago (they've given me CS:Source, and the hl value pack). I'm still going to buy the collectors edition though, since I'll get another cdkey, and the remake of HL, HL:Source. Basically hard products come through vivendi software from valve. By buying directly from valve, the developers get 100% of the profits which I'm all for... just wish steam was a bit better :)

Yes, you know how they've been going on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on.... etc. about how easy HL2 is to mod, and you can port HL mods in a flash.

Well they proved it by porting HL and CS to the source engine, both ingeniously called HL:Source and CS:Source.

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/half-life-2/51 ... ?fromint=1

It is included with the GOLD steam license, or the collector's edition retail only. It also gives people the chance to play through HL and see what all the fuss is about.

Not as much effort will go into the port as CS I'd imagine btw ;)

hmm... check out this screen:
http://media.pc.gamespy.com/media/492/4 ... 40732.html

Notice how all the shadows are a little displaces, so it looks like the monsters are floating a few inches in the air?

methinks that picture is taken midstep, those zombies drag their hind legs ;) Either that or the clipping is messed up.... hardly anything new to the world of gaming :)

You can actually play on CS: Source, it will be *identical* to how HL2 looks (okay, hl2 will have better textures) since... well its the source engine.

The shadows mess up when you do something weird like get shot through the head, then fall off a railing and dangle, but it happens fast so you don't notice it. I'd suspect a lot of people will be turning shadows down a notch as a lot of geometry and lighting is needed to draw shadows... can slow games down a lot.

I got this ace screenshot of a terrorist hanging off a ledge, looks like he's been strung up
