Whenever I right click on a file in My Documents or attempt to play a movie stored in this folder I get the error message -

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close"

and the info given is:

AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 0000000

I have done some searches to try to find an answer to this problem and, although there have been similar problems reported by others in various places, am unable to find a definitive answer on any of the postings.

Does anyone have an answer as to how I can stop this? Or even what causes it? I have done virus/spyware checks but, as expected, this didn't sort it. If I am unable find a resolution I will reformat - however it would be nice to know if there is a particular cause so I can avoid the problem once I've reformatted.

Many thanks.

this used to happen to me, then stopped.

Make sure you have the latest Divx codec.

If that doesn't work then uninstall all your codec's and reinstall only the ones you need and not from any codec packs.

check for spyware/adware.

note to all, check your windows error log first of all!

2nd button on my computer>Manage>System Tools>Event Viewer>Application / System

It will list all errors, warnings and problems in more detail. (You may know this but its good genreal info).

If you're using XP, have you tried selecting "show classic windows folders" instead of "show common tasks in folders" in folder options?

i bet you have a version of cws installed. update all spyware& antivirus stuff first. then go to safemode and delete all restore points, then scan with lavasoft adaware, spybot and do a virus scan.

there is probably 2-6 different files that is in your system32 folder that will need to be removed. write do their filenames if you find them. chances are you will not get them all the first time, and they will be back after a restart. most likely both dlls & exe are involved.

it only needs 2 or 3 files for each version of cws, more than that and you probably have multiple installed. chances are, if you do get rid of them, youwill still have those crashes, just not as often

Now that I've found out what caused the problem I've done some more searching and discovered that I'm not alone in having problems with this version of FFDShow.
The general consensus of opinion seems to be for anyone that has installed FFDShow 2004.10.03 to uninstall it and revert back to the 2004.08.28 version until a new one is released.

Worked for me! :D
