Might just as well give this a shot here...
I'm having some very irritating sound problems with some of my movies.
Thing is... and this is only the case with some movies... others are fine... I can't hear a damn word the people are saying in the movie. Now, I can crank up the volume - sure - but then my speakers would blow out when the sfx sounds come on.
Really... that's what puzzles me. It is SPEACH that I cannot hear. It gets all low as if the actors were trapped in a sound proof tin can, while all the other sounds seem to play just normally.
When watching the movies on TV it gets even worse - and some movies I simply cannot watch, because I can't hear a thing they say. Other movies... just fine, speach is crystal clear and blends nicely with sfx.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
Just let me know if you need any more info...

What audio are the rips encoded in?
MP3/OGG/AC3 etc etc???
Make sure you have the correct decoder installed.
Sounds like you're trying to watch AC3 audio rips, and you'll need the latest AC3 filter (0.7b)
<a href="http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/" target=blank>ac3filter main page</a>
Best suggestion I can come up with, given the info.

Try adjusting the equilizer, sounds like you have the mid-range down, or you have a 5.1 reciever, in that case, make sure you ar using the right mode for your stereo.

This might have something to do with your driver/codecs set up for 5.1 speakers on a machine equipped only with 2 speakers. You only hear channels that contain FX sounds and not speech. First, check if you're getting this problem only with ac3 movies. If so, then install the newest ac3 filter and this should solve the problem. Also, if ac3 sound volume is considerably lower than eg mp3, you can adjust gain level in ac3 filter.
Here's the link to AC3 filter v. 1.01. From my experience, much better than 0.7. It also decodes dts.

Nope sorry...
Tried downloading the AC3 filter, but no difference in sound - the movie I checked with had mp3 encoding.
Speakers are set up with the driver as desktop stereo speakers... so that shouldn't be the problem either.
What would be the latest codecs for Mp3 sound then? Maybe I'm missing something there (must admit, I have not updated my drivers in quite a while - and I do find them quite confusing).

Found the problem... or atleast a work-around.
It was in the AC3 filter settings. There was a "voice" bar that was level with two others. Sliding that one all the way to the top, and the other two just a tad down did the trick.
I doubt that is how the settings should be, but it appears I get a reasonable mixture of sound levels between speach and sfx now... although the movies I didn't have a problem with before are a little loud on the speach - can live with that though... no problem hearing what people are saying now

the volume problem has to deal with the way the xvid codec and ac3sound interacts, or something like that. google it and you can read more about it
