se7en is decent, its not 'scarey' but I didn't think that was the aim was it? It was supposed to be psychologically hard on the noggin', bit like The Game and Fight Club (which is why they are referred to as a 'loose trilogy').
All three were excellent I thought.
Silence of the Lambs is good, but its not that good.

I'm not slamming Se7en. Its pretty good. Its just another example of a movie that people find scary for no good reason.
So, how about the true greats, anything overrated there? Argento? Cronenberg? Carpenter? Shimizu? Nakada? Byeong-ki Ahn?
I found Tale of Two Sisters a little overrated. Still a great movie. Good plot, great visuals, great acting. I just didn't find it that scary. The one scene with the person walking across the bed was, but the rest wasn't scary at all. In fact, the horror output of Korea in general is overrated. Its awesome filmmaking because it refuses to conform to a genre most of the time, but bad horror for the same reason.

carpenter's latest are crap, but that goes without saying. In the Mouth of the Maness was his last film of merit that I recall.

no Argento is ever overrated, how can you even consider that!!! but then again i would say that
but as far as i'm concerned tho, anything with Stephen King's name on it is way overrated

Novel form? He really has little to do with the movie adaptations beyond basic plot... His books are messed up mostly, hard to read though.
And I mean, the Dark Zone was excellent, The Shining was excellent, Carrie was excellent, and theres many non-horror king movies that are good too, so I can't say they are overrated too much, there's a lot of decent films associated with the name.

??? hard as in ??? He writes MUCH about little, and it might get boring waiting for things to happen sometimes, but other than that I'd say he's fairly easily digested.
Ever tried reading Poe? Now that can be a challange! Many of the words he uses aren't even in the dictionary. And the "poetic" sentences require alot of decyphering at times, to understand what he's acutally saying...

Hmm, this is pretty hard because most people rate horror so low anyways. How about overrated trash.
Let's see, this'll raise some ire, Fulci. The shark versus zombie scene was sublime, the eye piercing was shocking, The Beyond was damn good and the perfect example of gore enhancing a movie, but basically most everything else he did sucked. Don't Torture the Duckling was a different type of movie and a little better than some of his others and Beatrice Censi, again, was a different type of movie, but both were not that great and I wouldn't have watched them without seeing his name on them. Basically, horror is better for him having been around, but its for about 3 things. I feel so cruel. Maybe, what I should really say is that as a journeyman director who followed any trend in filmmaking, he doesn't deserve a spot as a horror master. Since many consider him so, I think he's overrated.

The most overrated film to me is Zombi 2.
I think I've only seen two Fulci movies...
House by the Cemetery, which SUCKED...
...and Zombi 2 which was good, but is very overrated. The shark vs. Zombie scene was really original and well done, but that's about the only great thing in that movie. The eye piercing was cool, the zombie makeup was cool, the final scene in NYC was cool, nice filming locations, but the acting and storyline were extremely weak...
I rank Zombi 2 about a 6 or 7/10, entertaining fluff, but nowhere near "classic" status... More similar to a Joe D'Amato film, such as Emanuelle & The Last Cannibals... (I think Zombi 2's island locale especially reminded me of D'Amato's films)

Sorry Spud, I hate disagreeing with you because it normally ends up with me pissed off, but when I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought Fight Club! I hate this goddam movie, for me this is the most overrated piece of crap ever made. This is the movie that stupid people watch then think they are geniuses by the end... but of course it's all a matter of taste

I loved Fight Club, the Book's good too
Most overrated would have to be BWP, although I agree that alot of Fulci is shite.

Fight Club is excellent. How can it be overrated when it didn't even get proper media attention on release? Its a cult movie so overrated isn't really the right word, since by definition, it can't be cult unless it was unpopular or overlooked on release. Amusingly some Idiots acutally think its a film about underground boxing. Idiots are of course idiots
It is a fine example of brilliant modern writing, and I really hope they make Survivor into a movie. Its even better than Fight Club in my opinion. I really, really doubt it will ever be made due to its content and... well that 11/9 thing Still, it was slated for release at one point, so its always a possibility.
Fincher direction is awesome as you'd expect from a director of that calibre (and that's why he cost so many $ atm)

I really don't see how Fight Club is a cult movie. If it has been labelled a cult movie, that is simply by marketing people.
Look at the takings for the opening weekend on IMDB. A movie that takes ?11m in one weekend could never be cult by your definition. Now look at a modern movie that is regarded more widely as cult, e.g. Donnie Darko, and you will see that Donnie Darko just took a few $K in first weekend...

Erm, almost all films are overrated IMHO Think of every film that has got you hyped up pre-release, and now think how many of them were not as goos as you thought it was gonna be? Prolly fookin loads.
IMO I like films like Zombie 90, zero hype on that, I was expecting it to be pure shit, and it was, bad acting, bad dubbing, shit FX. I was stoned when I watched this with a few mates, we spent the entire movie almost laughing to death, that is what the best films do, give you good memories.
BTW, Star Wars is fucking shit if you compare what it is to what it is hyped up to to. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy SW when I see it, I just don't make any effort to watch it, just see it if nothing else is happening.

@krug, I don't see what isn't cult about it. It was based on a novel that's as cult as they come, it was a major blockbuster directed by the major A-list director fresh off from doing the game, and previously se7en, but totally overshadowed by Star Wars Episodes I, The Matrix and Austin Powers in the press relegating it to something that happened in the background (think back that far, you honestly can say it got any mention?), and got totally overshadowed and failed to even come close to box office expectations. Then to top it off, its about a freakin cult
It had NO press whatsoever until DVD, here for definite, but I'd wager that's true in every country, and to say the movie only did 'alright', and here's the part you might be forgetting, it is one of the best selling DVDs ever. Its sheer popularity is based entirely on its DVD release, so by definition, given true success only came about later, this is as cult as they come.
In terms of best selling DVDs, Fight Club is extremely high. It was at number one for a while, and its still very high up. Now does this reflect the status it got on initial launch? Certainly not.
I think your stretching hatred beyond reason personally, its certainly by definition cult.
It's a shame imdb doesn't state the dates of the votes, because I think you'll find the vast majority voted after its resurgance on DVD.
Personally, as far as I can remember of all the movies released in 1999, it was by quite a long way the best film out. Shame no one heard about it until later
Oh and thanks for mentioning Donnie Darko, I forgot all about it!
That's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo overrated. Don't get me wrong, its a nice film, but its made out to be something really great. Sorry but that's just plain wrong. There's nothing deep and meaningful about this movie to justify its status, people always go on and on and on and on about how good it is. Sorry, just a movie that tries to be a damn sight cooler than it actually is in my opinion. That's overrated to buggery. Not a horror, but that's really worth mentioning since you reminded me
@tak, yeah, but star wars is so cool it doesn't matter. ESB = best of the best
